Funkz posted:I have some bad news for you. The Promise Part 2 spoilers http://maiko-love.deviantart.com/jo...dness-295452354 Non-Korra-related: You know, I really always wanted to like Mai. Like Ty Lee and Suki, she's a non-bender who manages to hold her own (and then some) against benders. She just never has any really poignant or meaningful moments until the Boiling Rock, when the show is really almost over. You get these little hints, like when Azula denied the trade of King Bumi to get her baby brother back and Mai gave her an evil side-eye, but overall she was mostly just "the sullen teenage girl who doesn't want to do anything" so she didn't get much character, which was kind of pitifully explained away by my parents' expectations. By the time she throws herself under the bus to save Zuko, you don't even really care. She's basically just a plot device at that point, same as the Yu Yan archers were, and they promptly disappeared in Season 1 after the single episode in which they were needed. I really hope they'll actually do something interesting with her in The Promise.

I'm not understanding the people who are saying that bending is not a right. They are born with it. It is theirs, by whatever quirk of fate. The only way to even utilize it effectively is to train hard to master the element. How can it be considered a privilege just because some people aren't born with the ability? I think we'll probably see a lot more examples of the iniquity between the bending class and nonbenders, but there are plenty of examples already of opportunities existing for nonbenders. One example someone used earlier in the thread was that metalbender police positions are obviously unattainable for nonbenders, but the cop who chased off Korra in the park was most likely a nonbender (or he'd have been able to subdue her). I'm actually surprised at the amount of people defending Amon's position, and also at the amount of shockingly stupid theories of what is to come. This thread got weird fast.

Also, why is it that almost every young character has to have at least one dead parent? Aang (if you count Gyatso, but all of his people were killed which presumably includes his parents), Katara, Sokka, Zuko, Azula, all the Freedom Fighters, Teo, Bolin, Mako, Asami...seriously. And even the ones who had both parents came from oppressive home lives, like Toph, Mai, and Ty Lee. It seems like Korra is the only one exempt from this. All I'm saying is the Mommy/Daddy Issues thing is a liiiiiittle overused here.

I mean, I know there had to be some way to make the parents uninvolved in their kids' lives so they can all go dick around across the globe, but it at least made sense in TLA because of the war. That moment with Asami and Mako was somewhat reminiscent of when Zuko and Katara were captured in the catacombs under Ba Sing Sei. In TLA, the scene was presented as a sudden understanding between two people who were enemies. Since there was no immediate follow-up with Asami and Mako, I'm hoping there's something interesting planned there. Also, congrats to the writers for providing a burgeoning romance even more uncomfortable to watch than Zuko and Mai. I didn't think it was possible, really.

Tarlok is conniving, is into political power, but he's evidently no coward. That's the interesting bit. The way he strong-armed Korra into joining his force and publicly standing by his side, you figure it had to be a power play. But at the end of it, he was a part of the task force himself, and Korra even gave him props for his skills.

Of course he does. randombattle posted:I think the biggest problem with probending is turns all the fights into slap fights and takes out all the intelligent moves out of bending fights. In the original a fight would have like earth benders throwing walls up and turning the dirt to quicksand and water benders tossing ice walls that collapse back into water and flood someone. It was more dynamic and fights ended up being more about outsmarting the opponent into showing an opening and not just "I can toss this disk better then you can." I think of it like boxing versus an anything-goes style fight, where there are some constraints on what you can and can't do to ensure it's a clean fight. In the case of pro-bending, the rules are in place to make sure dirty poo poo (like headshots, holding, massive flame/water attacks, etc.) doesn't happen that would make it suck to watch because it would end really quickly. Man, I can't wait to see HD stills of the flashbacks. And I know those sequences are building up to something. Something awesome.

SECRET SECRET SECRET SECRET TUNNEL!SpiderHyphenMan posted:This kind of pisses me off because I think it would be a lot better if it was a firebender for Amon, an Earthbender for Mako/Bolin, and a Waterbender for Asami. It would just fit in with the narrative of "benders of all kinds have the potential to be assholes." You have to imagine what the Fire Nation would be like post-war. A massive army suddenly recalled from battles and occupations in the Earth Kingdom, with most of the nation still believing fire to be the superior element and that they should rule over the other two remaining nations. How do you change a people that has spent the past 100 years aggressively warring with the rest of the world into a peaceful society? What do you think would happen to all those former Fire Nation soldiers who have no other skills, having spent their whole lives training as elite firebenders to serve in the army? Of course a good deal of them turned to criminal violence. FronzelNeekburm posted:P.S. Aside from turning into Bat-fong, why would you give up your airships etc. to take Amon down OUTSIDE THE LAW, unless you suspect Tarlokk of being a snake in the grass? Because she can't do what she needs to do within the bounds of the law, and she can't focus on protecting civilians and taking down Amon (who seems to have no compunction against endangering non-sympathetic nonbenders) at the same time. And besides, the airships and teams of law enforcement clearly haven't helped, they've only ended up as targets in the line of fire. When fighting a versatile, merciless terrorist group, traditional forces aren't going to cut it. Looking forward to seeing Lin and her crack team in action. And as an aside, this episode officially marks the moment where I have begun to completely despise Mako. This is the second episode he's pulled the whole

FronzelNeekburm posted:I guess I have a hard time understanding what she can't do, since she can just sail a blimp anywhere in the city and just bust into people's training camps/warehouses/factories on rumors and the Avatar's say-so. She didn't bust into the Equalists training camp, that was Tarlok. And they mentioned that the cops were tipped off about Cabbage Corp, so I assume there was a warrant procedure there. Still, there are plenty of things police can't do that need to be done in a situation like this, not to mention the red tape (like warrants) that stands in the way when you're doing things by the books. Better just to become vigilante Spider-Fong and do what you gotta do -- like busting skulls. I do find it interesting that in the very first episode she despised Korra coming into the city and doling out vigilante justice Avatar style, but now she feels forced to resort to the same tactics to rescue her metalbenders and take down Amon. All this as she's beginning to warm up to Korra. Hooray character development!

It's an escalating conflict but I am getting a bit tired of the antagonists constantly winning. Yeah, I don't know how the metalbending cops at the tournament didn't remember that the Equalists had lightning sticks, at least.
