Did a google search for Korra and one of the linked articles was titled "Nickelodeon plans more than 650 new episodes". I nearly had a heart attack.

Of course it turned out that was just the whole channel's lineup for the upcoming year. Too bad.

I wonder if it is possible for Korra to have airbender children.

Pretty sure she'll only have water bender kids, unless she ends up with a bender of a different element.

After all Aang's kids were a water bender, a normal, and an air bender. No earth or fire bender despite the fact that he could use those elements.

I don't know if it was posted in the last thread, but Sifu Kisu (the main martial arts consultant for both ATLA and Korra) linked to this really cool article on his tumblr. Wow, that interview is just awesome. It definitely deserves to be linked in the OP.

Oh wow, where'd they say that? That means Roku/Kyoshi/etc. all died really young if you can live til 183.

Kyoshi lived to the age of 230. Kyoshi island was formed 370 years ago and that was just two avatar's ago (minus the hundred years in the ice that's still 270 years).

You're right, I'll drop it

Unfortunately due to the urban setting, I really doubt we'll see many - if any - of the mythical/godly creatures we ran into in the first series, unless they turn up in the spirit world somehow. That face-stealing demon who depends on provoking an emotional response might be a real tough foe for Korra to navigate her way past.

I don't see why there can't be specific urban spirits

Another bit of out-there speculation, but a bit more plausible.

When Azula killed Aang at the end of season 2, the avatar reincarnated into Amon, since we saw with Roku that it happens right at the moment of the Avatar's death. When Katara brough Aang back, it broke the rules and created a parallel connection to the Avatar spirit, which could also be retconned to explain Aang's shorter than expected lifespan, since he was not as connected to the Avatar spirit as a typical Avatar would be.

I find this shockingly plausible.

This show is definitely appeals to everyone. Both I and my 6 year old son enjoy the hell out of it.

What surprises me is how conservative this show seems. The protagonists have been set up as Korra and Tenzin, and both of them are trying to keep the big, shiny city following the 'old ways.' Balance, harmony, "the old ways work, so stick to the old ways." But then we have these protestors, these people holding protests and talking about how it isn't fair, the 1% (or whatever) of benders thinking they are better than everyone else, generally trying to advance what they see as progressive philosophies to, as they see it, make life more "fair" for everyone. Occupy!

What I wonder is, if these protesters had their way, what would they do to the bending community? Potential for dark territory there, if the show goes in that direction.

A 20s era Marxist or an Anarchist with a megaphone could make their movement sound entirely reasonable with a short soundbite. Let's wait until we see the Equalist manifesto so to speak before we judge it.

Exactly. This Amon fellow has certainly debated the brightest and most articulate intellectuals in Republic City. All revolutionary leaders do this. The new series is one that opens by raising the question of what place the Avatar has in a new world, and so Korra's question is what she needs to become in the first place. The answer is obvious. She should fight crime in a polar beardog themed outfit.

So, I was wondering if maybe somehow Amon was using energy bending not just to strip the ability to bend from people, but to actually absorb their power himself. Y'know something I found interesting? At the beginning of the first episode, when the White Lotus goes to visit Korra's family, you can noticeably see the lights of a bustling port city within walking distance from the Water Tribe igloos. It'd have taken maybe...twenty or thirty minutes at a brisk pace for the White Lotus to get from one place to another? It really does remind me of present-day tribal cultures that are living right on top of "modernized" societies...some might say encroaching on each other's space.

Basically, the theme of tradition vs progress is made clear in the very first frame of this show.
It's probably a water tribe city made of ice like at the north pole, and Korra just lives in the burbs.

To be honest, I was thinking something kind of like this too. Amon's story is weird, even if we assume he's not just completely pulling poo poo out of his rear end for the crowd's benefit. I could understand the extortionist threatening violence to the dad or his family to get him to pay up. The way Amon tells it, though he's implying that the guy killed everyone but him and then blasted his face off. Why? Was he hoping the kid was gonna be more inclined to cough up now that his face was bacon? What was he hoping to gain by extorting a bunch of poor farmers in the first place?

Well the firebender could have assumed he was mortally wounded.

Anyway, now that I have the context of the first series, I have a few questions about the setting in Korra. First of all, is Republic City a city-state or a capital of a larger nation or unified world government? Do the original four nations (minus Air Nomads) still exist?

I also thought I saw a few airbenders in the city other than Tenzin's family. I may be mistaken but wouldn't there be none to be found other than Tenzin and his kids? In a similar vein, wasn't Katara the last southern waterbender? As I understand it, Korra isn't from the north so I figure she must be related to Katara somehow. Or does bending work like magic in Harry Potter and non-bending parents can have a bending child?

Also I saw a sky bison at more than one point. Wasn't Appa the last? Wouldn't the sky bison have gone extinct after he died?

It's the Capital of the United Republic of Nations, which is a union of former Fire Nation Colonies in the Earth Kingdom. The formation of which is dealt with in the Comic "The Promise".

The Northern Tribe sent settlers to help rebuild the South after the failed Fire Nation Attack on the North.
