Well, it seemed like he had a mouth and eyes... (?) Looking forward to hearing what the spirit world/past Avatars have to say about the state of the world, particularly now that Amon seems intent on using "the spirits" as part of his little manifesto.

Glitterbomber posted:I really hope there are some spirits and Avatars who go 'no, the world is hosed and the non-benders are screwed, things are super out of balance and you can't just punch your way to victory here'. Obviously that's going to be part of her lesson but I really wanna see spirits also divided on the issue! Yeah, the reason why I even wanted the spirit world to weigh in was because the Avatars were such a great counterpoint to Aang's über-pacifist mindset during the finale (Air Nomad Avatar Yangchen basically telling him to suck it up for the sake of the world was such a great moment). And the series certainly hasn't shied away from confronting Korra with her biases so far.

namesake posted:As terrible as it may seem, if this system can only be created through the threat of removing all bending then needs must. Well, I guess the ends justify the means, everyone! I've been reading this thread for a while, and while I just don't think there's enough examples of everyday life and society in Republic City to really say what the problems of the city are, let alone what causes them and what needs to be done about them, I find this approach...problematic. Then again, as interesting as this discussion is, it's hard for me to find a viewpoint that isn't problematic, since our source material being what it is, bending is never going to stop being objectively awesome. Bending is literally the reason the show even exists (it was a way to slip violence past the censors), and it's understandably integrated into every level of the show, and life for the show and its world. That doesn't mean it should be pulled out of the world altogether, just that bending and the world as it is in Korra's time needs to find a more equal balance. Exactly how, of course, is another thing I'll leave up to the show. (And The Promise comic, since apparently Aang and friends have been working on that whole "balance" thing for the past 70 years). After that whole Zutara incident, never again will I question the godlike will of Mike and Bryan.

Vermain posted:As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, I like the fact that fighting isn't really getting them anywhere. The lesson of how you can't punch away every problem would be an important one for Korra, and I imagine that her spooky Avatar visions have something to do with this. I doubt it's Aang trying to contact Korra to tell her how to kick everyone's rear end, but to tell her something important about Tarrlok/Amon that will help her. Rewatching the episode right now, and can't agree with everyone more on the fighting lesson. Korra's been tossing around her Avatar title way too long, and watching Tarrlok remind her how far she still really has to go was painful, but true. And since next episode seems to promise some spiritual progress, if the description is right, I feel like the show will finally be leading to some real long-term development. Not that I don't enjoy sweeping the basic development out of the way, especially since Korra was essentially a recluse growing up (what's a city, who are these people, how do I feel about them, Korra getting her confidence bubble popped and figuring out Tarrlok's a manipulative douchebag, etc.), but it'll be awesome to begin to figure out WHAT THE HECK'S GOING ON.

SpiderHyphenMan posted:I'm still processing the fact that a Saturday morning cartoon ended with a 17 year old girl attempting to murder a public official for wrongfully imprisoning her friends, only to be overpowered and kidnapped and tied up in the back of his truck. And then they cut to the Spongebob theme song. I can't believe I was surprised when they addressed the legal and political side of things. Tenzin invoking due process, Tarrlok busting out his emergency laws, the police taking kettling to a whole new level — so awesome. How could I forget that this was the series that went all Pyongyang with Ba Sing Se? (That Tarrlok-Korra fight was pretty violent too, what with the "who's half-baked now" Korra Smash and the never-stops-being-creepy bloodbending. landcollector posted:I might well not be approaching the show correctly, but what is a "rewarding" way to view it then? This is just me, but I think of it more as a process of gradual character development towards overcoming long-term obstacles (Amon, Tarrlok, spiritual emptiness, emotional maturity) rather than total losses (especially when there are definite victories). But, hey, whatever works for you!

Crasscrab posted:Okay, so here's my theory: Nickelodeon isn't going to renew Korra for a second season, so Mike and Bryan had to throw away all the plans and just end the loving series with this season. That is the only explanation I can think of for why this was such a loving train wreck. They just had no idea if there was going to be a second season. And, as I think we all know now, Avatar works best as a multi-season epic, rather than some one-shot miniseries. EDIT: (But I still liked it.

DizzyBum posted:As for how Amon actually took away bending, I assume it's chi-blocking augmented by bloodbending to be permanent? The way Katara made it sound ("her connection to the other three elements has been severed") there was some chakra-blocking/spiritual poo poo going on too. But I imagine a minor, permanent modification to the way a person moves would also really screw up their bending (but not airbending, apparently?).
