Don't worry it's torture once you get in as well. Prepare to spend three hours backtracking and swearing at cliffs, traveling thirty-eight miles to get three miles as the crow flies to the goon enclave.

Then you will get told to go out and collect stuff, requiring you to go back out through the tortuous maze of ridges.

Basically it's awesome.

I finally got in, and I think this game is griefing me. No idea what to do. I've been walking around for several minutes now and haven't seen a single thing to pick up at study or whatever.

Yeah you need to go fairly far away from Boston to get to any stuff, the area around the city has been picked clean I guess. If you try to find the goon camp you'll probably get so lost in the wilderness that you will find plenty of smooth stones (but no goons).

That's pretty stupid. Welcome to the game, you got here after everyone else so walk that way for three hours if you want to start playing.

That's seriously the experience I had. I'm not even joking, three hours before I found a smooth stone. It was the first learning item I found.

It's Salem, if you can't walk without autopathing for over six hours, you're not going to last long.

Grind and forage for 48 hours until you get the skill to punch a cricket.

It will probably kill you.

O, for a muse of fire

I believe the reason stuff like the smooth stone is put so far away is they want the settlements players build to be pretty far away from each other. Wouldn't be much challenge if players stated in tight clusters of towns that took ten seconds to walk between. As it is now a settlement HAS to be quite far from Boston or another settlement to have any chance of resources to thrive

Welp, walked around for an hour and found nothing but some plants that I could eat but didn't give me any points for anything. Was almost to a goon town apparently then some guy asked if I was a witch and then killed me. Now I'm back at Boston with nothing. Maybe wandering aimlessly is fun for some people, but if I'm going to start out in a game I'd like to see at least some progression in the first few minutes. This game is like reading the first chapter of 2001 except it just stays totally boring and never gets interesting.

I guess I'm done now.

No, smooth stone was very common. They were all picked up early on -- all the land near Boston is ravaged, need to go out further.

Too be fair the learning curve is less a curve and more a vertical wall lined with saw blades. Your first fight will be against a grass hopper and you will lose to it

Forcing players to wander around for hours looking for a rock before they can do literally anything else in the game is not a "learning curve".

If people thought that EVE online and Minecraft had a big learning curve, This game will poo poo all over them. It's like putting a 4 year old on the peak of Everest and telling them to climb down by themselves without any equipment or clothes. This game will destroy your soul.

You have to understand this is a 3d version of Haven and Hearth. It's not meant to be easy, those of us who have played Haven and Hearth I'm sure aren't surprised by the learning curve or difficulty in the first few hours.

It's meant to be so detailed and complex that it takes a while just to get your bearings, to me that is fun. I enjoyed learning Haven and Hearth a lot, and the same will hopefully apply to this game.

A learning curve is where you slowly learn how to do something. Where you are unable to do something because you don't know how yet. A learning curve is not where you are unable to do something because it's not possible. I thought this was going to be a game where you wander around the wilderness and make a town and have fun. Turns out you just wander around the wilderness and don't do anything because they game gives you absolutely no opportunity to progress.

I'm past the learning curve. I know how to do what I need to do based on tutorials and walkthroughs. What I'm stuck on is the fact that the game won't let me do any of these things because I haven't wandered out for several hours and gotten murdered enough times yet. Maybe that's fun to some people, but this isn't the game the developers claimed to be developing.

Edit: I'm going to keep trying to play this game. Is there anyone in the main goon group online to invite?

A tutorial would be kickin rad - So far I've moved a rock around, and climbed a cliff, but I don't know how to get food, or make a fire, or do anything of even moderate use.

Also I added Blawrf and so forth, add me in please!

Edit: I have some grass and some cranberries, but I'm lost - can I eat them or something?
