![]() The Cabin in the Woods is scary. It's unpredictable. It's FUNNY. It keeps you guessing in all the right places, and it ramps up the tension wonderfully when the characters are just about to do the wrong thing. Written by the tag team of Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard (who also directed), TCITW was filmed in the Spring of 2009, and it's taken three years to get into theaters, due to MGM's financial problems. It was set for release in February 2010, then January 2011, and finally April 2012. There's barely any of the "Whedon dialect" people might be worried about, but plenty of the humor that has worked well for his scripts in the past. Whedon sez: ...it's a serious critique of what we love and what we don't about horror movies. I love being scared. I love that mixture of thrill, of horror, that objectification/identification thing of wanting definitely for the people to be alright but at the same time hoping they’ll go somewhere dark and face something awful. The things that I don't like are kids acting like idiots, the devolution of the horror movie into torture porn and into a long series of sadistic comeuppances. Drew and I both felt that the pendulum had swung a little too far in that direction. No, the trailer doesn't give it all away. But please be mindful of spoiler tags! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNu38ZWDzfQ&hd=1 Cast: Kristen Connolly (As the World Turns/The Guiding Light), Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Star Trek), Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), Brian White (The Shield/Men of a Certain Age), Jesse Williams (Grey's Anatomy), Anna Hutchison (Power Rangers: Jungle Fury), Amy Acker (Angel), Fran Kranz (Dollhouse), and a surprise cameo by Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Ghostbusters, Avatar). Going to see this tomorrow, and I'm pretty drat excited about it now. I had zero interest in this until spoilers of the ending were posted in...I think the Movie Posters thread. Or maybe it was the Who Greenlighted This poo poo thread. I forget now. But anyway, the spoilers sounded completely loving batshit insane. I wasn't expecting that AT ALL, and I don't think anyone else was either. Whatever thread those spoilers were posted in, along with a couple other threads had several people chiming in about how fun and seriously crazy the entire movie is, and now I'm very hyped up about it. Hopefully it won't disappoint

Yeah, you know, being spoilered for this movie wouldn't really have lessened my enjoyment in it, but I went into it at a midnight screening totally blind (i.e., the things I thought were plot twists occurred like 20 minutes into the movie, and the REAL plot twists came much later). It was a total blast and the audience was great - quiet during the right moments but busting out laughing quite frequently. I didn't expect it to be quite so much of a crowd-pleaser, but in the last 30 minutes or so, it's hard not to have a huge nerd-grin. edit: just wanted to mention how awesome the poster is, both in terms of looking cool and also because it does a great job of subtly hinting at the surprises in the plot. I just went into this movie blind, had no idea what it was about aside from my friend just telling me that he heard some good reviews about it. I haven't been this pleasantly surprised in a long long time. It's pretty great, and compared to some of the dreck out there right now, this needs to be seen.

Just saw this today without really reading anything about it other than seeing a few people say it was good. I highly recommend it, and try to go in knowing as little as possible if you can.

I went to the theater this afternoon to watch this, not really knowing what it was about other than a few snippets here and there. One of the better movies I've seen in a long time. Very much tongue in cheek throughout.

As I was watching this move I was in disbelief about most of the stuff going on thinking they weren't going to show what they were implying, and when they did I was blown away and it never stops. This movie is so good everyone needs to go see it.

What was the older operator referring to when he mentioned 1998? Any ideas? I feel like I missed a good joke. I also need to talk about all of the monsters and what they might be allusions to. Most were obvious but there were a few I didn't get. Also, what horror was going to be summoned by the necklace in the cellar? I'm thinking a ghost but I'm not sure. This was an insanely enjoyable movie. One thing they got right that most horror movies get wrong, in my opinion, is that all five of the characters going up to the cabin are likable and sympathetic.

The DVD will settle beautifully between Scream & Cube on my DVD shelf. I liked the film a lot on first watch & feel compelled to go see it again already. I can see how some might have an averse reaction to it though, especially people happy with the usual type of dumb horror flick to take a date to. I mean - likable characters, an original plot, funny dialogue? Pah! I'm praying to the Gods for this to make a shitload of money.

Cameo question - The scientist in the facility near the end who shouts "You can't go that way!" sounded and looked like Bruce Campbell from what little you could see of him, but his name was nowhere in the credits. Can anybody confirm that?

Just saw this today and it was amazing. I've been waiting for years to see it and it was definitely worth it, especially having kept myself completely spoiler-free. I even ended up dragging two people there who really didn't want to see it after promising them it wasn't some generic horror movie and they ended up loving it as much as I did. It was hilarious, well-acted, scary in some parts. The betting portion was probably my favourite part, specifically when I noticed "Unicorn" on it and we got that payoff. Also, the glorious dirtbike jump was so perfectly cheesey. Quick question - Why did we have to see Jules' breasts? I know Truman asked that and the answer was something like "You think we're the only ones watching?" but I can't remember fully the reasoning behind it. skattered posted:My wife and I loved this movie, but walking out we heard a crowd of douchers complaining that "it wasn't scary at all" and "I didn't like scream either". It was definitely far enough into the movie that they should have 'gotten it' by then, so clearly they just wanted generic slasher film. If this doesn't make it on my top ten of the year, I will be shocked. It was that good. I've determined that this is basically a much more audience friendly Funny Games. It's doesn't hate horror audiences, it just makes them into Gods that will rise up and destroy a movie if a formula is not followed followed to the letter. It's a movie where the audience for horror movies punish interesting ideas and creativity. How did a satire this awesome and clever get released by Lion's loving Gate? LesterGroans posted:Quick question - Why did we have to see the breasts? I think that line is pretty much just saying that the Gods are the horror movie audience. They don't just want to see people killed for being "bad", they want sex and violence to entertain them. The horror movies are keeping the elder gods placated so they have to be entertaining. axleblaze fucked around with this message at Apr 14, 2012 around 01:28 |

I loved this movie. It's a brilliant and entertaining horror movie deconstruction which is so drat refreshing in the middle of all these reboots and sequels and every single intellectual property getting optioned into a film. The scene where the scientists are celebrating while the cheery music is playing and the heroine is getting the poo poo beaten out of her by zombie dude on the dock was amazing.

That makes sense, especially as a metaphor for/indictment of the horror audience. I just couldn't remember if there was more to the explanation that I missed. So how loving amazing were Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford in this movie? They were pitch-perfect and I don't know if anyone else could have pulled it off as well as they did.

I love Cabin In The Woods, love it, saw it 2 weeks ago and have been looking forwards to seeing it again. How packed are theaters for those that saw it tonight, also about the ending anyone else feel Jamie Lee Curtis would have been a better choice for that part? As much as I love Sigourney Weaver I feel Jamie Lee was more a scream queen and did Slashers while Sigourney Weaver did sci-fi action movies.

In response to Marty having awesome lines..."Roads paved with actual road!" "While those morons were singing "What a friend we have in Shinto", we were bringing the pain." I really do love this movie. Second viewing was almost as fun as the first. The monsters getting unleashed hits a primal center in my brain and I just sit there grinning ear to goddamn ear.

I was pleased to see a pretty crowded theater for my showing tonight, and they really seemed to eat it up. Some of the better jokes got really good responses from them. Especially The Merman. That ugly fucker Fun Fact: I went to a screening where the actors who played Dana and Marty were there to do a Q+A afterwords (They actually watched the movie with us too, which I've never seen any actor do at an event like that. It was Fran's first time seeing it with an audience, apparently) and I got to ask a question. I told them that working in haunted houses, the last act of this really appealed to me because of the variety of monsters unleashed, which is sort of what we do at a haunted house. All fears in one place. I then asked how it was to work with the monsters, real and fake. They said that most of the monsters were there (besides the big things like the snake and stuff. They mentioned the ghost, and how it was apparently hard to nail down what that was going to be, and originally it was supposed to be an alien, but they couldn't right. One day Sigourney Weaver quiped "Yeah, sometimes it's hard to do a good Alien." and then they made it a ghost.
