There are some Kickstarter projects which fail not because their idea suck but because the project starter simply fails to put up a good presentation or advertise the project elsewhere.

For example, that CHICK ON THE GO project Snowglobe of Doom posted... I wouldn't know if the idea by itself is bad, but I would reckon her target audience aren't the type that browse around the Kickstarter site or spend much time on the internet for that matter.
Which is why is think its so funny the "My American Game" guy threw a hissy fit, as if the blame is on the Kickstarter staff his project was gonna fail because they didn't put him as a Staff Pick.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects...camouflaj-logan would have succeed if the makers hadn't waited until the project was halfway its term before advertising it through other game-related sites.

I first saw Republique on gaming sites in the beginning of April, so they didn't wait for it to be half way through.

It was a hyperbole on my part, but it stayed stagnant for a week and only picked up when they started advertising it more aggressively.

My point is you can't just make a Kickstarter project and cross your fingers if you really want it to succeed, specially if you are trying to raise a high amount of money. Not everyone can get lucky like the guy from Unemployment Quest.

Your definition of "hyperbole" seems to be closer to "making poo poo up", considering it was covered extensively by IGN, Polygon, GameInformer, Joystiq, 1UP, and Gamasutra on the very first day of the Kickstarter (Apr 10), and previewed by Kotaku the week prior.

Sorry, I see I wasn't clear enough. It did get covered at the start of the Kickstarter project, but there wasn't enough information to draw people in. When it was initially announced there was only an iOS version so not many people cared. Only after 2 weeks the PC version was announced and more people started showing interest. Their initial coverage was nothing compared to the attention they got now.

Look at their update history and their pledgers activity. They stayed silent for too long during the start and introduced the Operation Keep Hope Alive when there were only 8 days left. They could reach their goal if they could stretch the project a bit more to make up for lost time.

I have seen more gaming projects which looked interesting but failed due to lack of any updates, but that might be because they were vaporware to begin with.

On topic, this guy cancelled his project after people pointed out how misguided he was.

They will definately make it. They are less than 1k away as I write this.

Seeing the pledges go up this fast during the last hours was surreal.

Edit: They made it. Holy crap, its was going for a thousand dollars a second or something.

I'm still amazed about how popular the Remee got. 400k when they only wanted 35k. And people don't even know if it works.

Maybe I'm thinking too simplistic, but for established companies whose projects are bounded to succeed, using Kickstarter might be a good way to create a game with less risk involved because the product will be paid in advance and you already have knowledge about the size of your potential userbase. More awful projects, this time from the 'Awful projects which got funded' category:

Games:

A 50 dollar game project? These guys are just using Kickstarter to get beer money.

Throw in some concept art and people will somehow ignore the horrible demo video

we need a programmer willing to work for less than minimum wage.

Movies:

Another goddamn vampire movie

I hope this ends up really hilarious because those drawings are downright awful.

Having your friends fund your project is also a tactic.

Comics:

Furry comics

otaku comics

hipster comics

Technology:

Human technology has come full-circle.

And you obviously didn't watch the movie in Wastelands 2 project. Publishers would not take the IP because they never heard of it and the ones who did wanted to turn it into something that was not Wastelands.

The guys from Republique would go to a publisher if the Kickstarter project failed. Good thing they didn't because now they can make the game THEY want and the fans want.

But he's managed to basically turn his life around with a game he threw together with a free program he downloaded online. I think that's pretty cool, if nothing else.

If you read the comments on his project you see he got lots of support from people who have been unemployed for a long period. Its really telling when a game about unemployment strikes such a chord with people that they fund it on concept alone.

They didn't cancel it because it was pornographic. The most popular comic project is adult-themed without a drop of subtlety. The video section also has plenty of borderline porn.

I don't know what details they had when it got approved, but I'm almost sure it was because of the backlash caused by articles like Kotaku. The Kickstarter staff aren't idiots living inside their own bubble. They know what goes around the internet.

I wonder if this will be the only round of successful games (wasteland, carmageddon, etc) where the original developers buying back the rights to their old games from the publishers. Once publishers figure out the original devs can get a ton of cash on KS, why not just do it themselves?

The reason these projects are popular is due to the fact its the original developers and not so much the IP itself. This project is not an old IP for example, but got funded due to the people behind it.

Gamers know there is a huge difference between a publisher bringing an IP back and the original developer doing so. The former will be purely for profit and the later for the love of the original work.

So apparently someone got his feelings hurt.

I can't for the life of me think of why anyone would go through the trouble of telling someone " You're going to fail". Me personally, if I saw that someone had unrealistic goals and I suspected them doomed for failure, I would not publically try to humiliate them or tell them that their dreams are unrealistic, if anything I would cheer them on and even help them. Many great things have been achieved by those who were "laughed at" or "thought crazy". Are we crazy for doing such a big project, probably. Did we ever think we'd be this far? Nope we didn't. However, we're to a point now, where if we were to get funded, I have the contacts and studios lined up to do the work we need done. We have all the model lists, maps, building lists, the needs we need all lined up and sorted, so if we do reach our goal, work begins immediately. Not only will work begin immediately, it will be local people in the U.S.A. who gets the buisness to help stimulate the local economy and game industry. I actually know several professional moderls, producers, game creators in my local area who are ready to go, providing we can provide them an income. (Hey we all gotta eat). While I do appreciate your input, I just don't think that you realize how planned out this is and how many contacts we have. It's not just some fly by night, hey let's make a game. It started out as a hobby, which evolved into a much more involved project. We've had teams of players already playing on our server, testing the game out, we've been badgered with questions, ( Hey when are we going to get to play again, I was rather addicted to that) Which I find one of the best compliments ever. I for one would never go out of my way to criticize someone for their dream, no matter how high or low the reach, guess that's just me.
