This game needs factions. It needs defendable forts and cities that you can clean out of zombies and increase the loot/whatever while you have it and have to defend it against other factions. It needs a better AI for zombies, The Horde that slowly shuffles a certain path from city to city, village to village, eating everything and everyone who hasn't enough manpower and big enough guns to stop it.

I know "it's still alpha you dumbfuck!", but it is getting seriously boring to do the same raids again and again.

Hahaha, one of my best kills were two pubbies, nose stuck in the city sign, asking help with it's cyrillic name in sidechat. I stood behind them for good minute, before I switched to the direct chat, said "It's Otmel ya dummies" and dumped a magazine of 5.45mm in them as they turned. There are two ways to play this game. One is the play super conservatively and try to acquire the best items in the game. I suggest all players do this, until they are content with that. Then once you realize all your awesome gear has you so paranoid that you never leave a single location, you'll start having fun.

Beware the man who has lived longer than the Wasteland.

Read paragraph 65.

Being able to have fun without even doing anything is the best part of the game. Meant in two ways.

One, just lying in the grass hoping for the zombies to stop circling the building you want to enter can be fun.

Two, briefly walking around the same area looking for loot on multiple different servers can be fun. One server will have a full array of canned food and water, another will be nothing but empty tin cans, and the one I just entered will have a roof full of dead newbies with flares set up around them.

(I am pretty surprised that whoever killed them was not still up there to kill me upon finding it, actually)

Is there a way to get the Makarov from a new player, given that I have an empty M1911 and cannot seem to find any other weapons no matter how many buildings I enter without being able to defend myself? Do you just take the pack and hope for the best?

Sidearms (and their ammunition) are exceedingly common on grocery stores. I've gone into some and found 3 or 4 in just one store.

Just aim at the corpse and press "Gear" when it appears. The backpacks are separate from the regular inventory, you have to open yours in the gear screen if you want to stuff things in there.

Throwing frag grenades in this engine has to be the least intuitive and random thing. I've practiced throwing a bunch in DayZ and they go so far I'm pretty sure I'm superman. Even trying to be easy on the strength they still bounce around like loving superballs and go nowhere near where I'm trying to put them. So I went into arma 2 training and finally figured out where the grenade training was and it's not even really explained.

Anyone got any hot tips for frags?

Grenades, both from launchers and thrown, are really horrible to aim in ArmA, and it's really just a case of getting a feel for different ranges in training. In Day Z, I've found grenades are most useful when thrown through a door into a building, as you don't have to worry about range so much.

You need to make sure that you're actually inside the building: grocery stores have weird blocking on the doors that requires you to either run inside to toss or arc it at the very bottom in hopes of getting it in (for some reason knee height works)

I have a grenade on me currently, but I'm buggered if i'm ever going to use it. I'm an original OFP player and know the plight of the throwing system. I just know if I use it, my party will go up in flames with me.

I was holed up in a building, and threw a tin can out of the door, and where does it land. Just in the doorway, nice.

From a game-design standpoint, does anyone know why interiors are so clunky? Is it because the game account collision models for your third person model and not just first person models (although I think they're the same for OFP/ARMA?). So your assault rifle is like a giant barge-pole you have to navigate in a tight space.

Surely the devs must of seen this during testing. I don't mind clunky, but when you try and turn around in a building and you can't even move, that is a bit stupid. I do not look forward to the day I find someone in an apartment with me.

Ran into a church, got shot in the leg, emptied the whole clip of my makarov into the guy that shot me. Then the zombies that were chasing me walked through the doorway. I managed to kill them but I was full of holes and bleeding everywhere and by the time I had bandaged myself I was at 1870 blood. At this point the unconscious attempted murderer tried to stand up so I finished him off.

After that, somebody else ran in with an enfield and attracted every zombie in cherno to the church!

I always hated that guy.

A buddy of mine met Rocket at E3 yesterday:

quote:

Hey, I was at E3 today and met Rocket, the developer of this mod. I talked to him for about five minutes about the mod, so I'm just gonna go through how the conversation went.

I first addressed him by saying that I love his mod, and that he should never stop punishing the carebears who want it to be made into a 'fun' game. He laughed, clearly loving that sentiment. I first asked him if he was going to get a team to help him out. He responded that Bohemia Interactive is very supportive of games that don't really have any marketability or exposure, and is willing to take risks in this way on games that may or may not clearly make money right away. I agreed, considering that Arma is basically a simulation engine and not necessarily a game. Because of this attitude, he said, he has been instructed directly to stop his work as a multiplayer designer so that he can focus exclusively on Day Z, and that he believes that Day Z is the first step towards Bohemia gearing up to make it into a full standalone game out of recognition for the opportunity to make something very different and the clear interest people have in it. He went on to say that it being a standalone title is important if only for the sake of consistency and ease of play, as mods are not the most stable or easy-to-use games, and that the only determining factor for the mod's future is the stability of the unpredictable fanbase.

I told him that the fans are playing it in droves, and with great fervor, even in spite of its clearly-alpha state; in fact, on that note, the forums are blowing up with "WHERES ROCKET" and bug reports while he's here at E3. He laughed and said he's been trying to not visit the forums while he's gone cuz he knows he's gonna get pissed. I then went ahead and asked him if he thought the mod would end up on Arma 3. He said he'd already sort of ported it to try it out (!!!), and that it works great. The main reason he "released" Day Z so early as an alpha was to allow for it to be stress-tested, as it is primarily a network-based game. At this juncture, I asked if he saw it ending up with more players-per-server in the future. He said DEFINITELY, that it's been tested internally and he thinks it could handle between 100-200 players easily (!!!!!). The thought of the anti-bandit rage this would induce gave me a semi. Anyway, he said that the engine was developed for such incredible strains, and that such numbers are in fact a natural fit.

I asked him if he thought he'd be doing away with 'meta' elements, such as server-wide chat and in-game player lists. He said not only is he doing this for sure, but that he's only waiting on the next beta patch of Arma 2 and then it is definitely happening. This excited me greatly. At this point, opportunely enough, I noticed his shirt. He said he'd had a bunch made, but that they didn't ship in time for the show so he had a small batch printed up when he got here so he could wear one. Said he took the idea from 4chan. I asked him if he'd let 'them' know about it yet, and by 'them' that I meant the entire internet. He said no, so I said "well shall we?"

I've had a lot of fun with the game in the past, did some really cool poo poo. However, I can only sneak so long, hunt pubbies so long, before it gets kind of boring and repetitive. The survival aspects are what they are, its just not enough to justify doing it over and over. To me, at least.

There's so much time one can dedicate running from town to town, getting weapons, eating, drinking, not freezing. That's a lot of setup time if you're thinking of doing stuff in the game. What's the point? So you can sneak around more and maybe sit on a hill for 3 hours to hunt a few pubbies? Yes I realize that we can set traps, do this or that, I guess I'm just tired of running from town to town doing that. I want to get in the game and play it every now and then instead of getting ready to play it.

There are a lot of things to do in the game, just not a lot of reasons to keep on doing it. For me, at least.

Lately, when I've played, I've just tried to 'survive' as long as I can in the coastal cities not even caring about who is shooting me, if I starve, or whatever. I've been more entertained by other random people's actions in the game. Is that guy gonna shoot me or not? If he does, I don't care. I don't have anything on me I care about losing, and I'm just gonna respawn and do it all over again anyway.

I've gotten a big kick out of what people do or do not do. A lot of times people will ignore me just as much as shoot me. Some will ignore me, and then shoot me later. One guy shot me three times, saw I wasn't dead...and just ran the gently caress away for no reason.

I know I'm going to get bored with that soon.

I really wish they'd add more stuff in the game that doesn't have to do with managing another survival constraint.

Being able to join groups in game would go a hell of a long way to satisfy those who love/hate banditry. You wanna lone wolf and kill everything? Go ahead. You wanna group up and kill everything? Go ahead. You want to group up and announce your hippie commune in the Cherno Fire Station? More power to you.

Yes it sounds like happy horseshit but people can get the sense of 'belonging' or whatever because there are certain advantages to being in a Group as far as ARMA is concerned. Depending on difficulty setting, you may get diamonds on your HUD showing each member of your group and where they are. Your Group Leader will show up with chevrons so everyone knows who it is, and can give waypoints on your screen (with commands!). Group members will 'auto' report locations of people they spot (man, unknown, 11 o'clock).

I also wish they'd do something more with adjusting zombie spawns. Not so much the number, but their timing and I suppose... conditions. I've had a lot of guns before and wanted to use them. I thought it would be loving awesome to roll into town with a group of like-minded survivors/bandits and totally clear a city of zombies. If only for an hour. That way, despite the the conceits of 'persistence', you'd still get a feeling that you accomplished some task that made a difference.

Sure, make it tough, make it take a lot of ammo. However, despite the fact that I know this is a zombie surival simulator, it is deflating to kill 12 zombies in a row only to have one respawn within 10 feet of you. If they're going to keep coming, they at the very least have to come from somewhere far off.

Sorry for the probably disjointed wall of par-of-normal-Dayz-forum-poster bullshit. However, just wanted to throw out some poo poo so no one thinks I'm just dissing the mod for the gently caress of it.

Got my first murder today. Some pubbies were talking in side chat about where they were in Electro so I decided to try and track them down. I accidentally stumbled right into the building they were in. It was a two story school-type looking building with a ladder that went to the roof. I cleared the first floor and was about to walk out when I heard a soda can pop upstairs followed by footsteps. My heart started racing. I slowly walked up the stairs to the second floor. As I got to the second floor, I saw a survivor's pack move into one of the rooms. I kept moving slowly until I was in the same room as the survivor. He was looking down at some loot and I put one Remington shell into his back. He immediately fell over. I forgot that there was a consciousness system in the game and decided to wait to loot him until I could make sure the floor was clear.

I made sure there were no others on the floor I was on and backtracked to the room my kill was in. As soon as I got in the doorway, he regained consciousness and I quickly shot him 2 more times until I heard flies.

By this time, his friends on the roof saw that their buddy had just been killed and I decided to rush to the ladder they were most likely going to be climbing down. Then I hosed up. I got impatient while the dead guy started telling them that I was here and decided to just climb the ladder since they seemed pretty clueless. I was greeted with a revolver to the face.

Also ALICE bags tend to bug on spawn, way to actually pick one up is to remove the pile of loot under it first before you can access it.
