Mr.48 posted:Is this representative of the current state of the mod? Because it looks glitchy and not fun at all, much like Arma. This game is glitchy at the best of times and unfinished in the extreme, but its still fun as hell and worth trying. Its actually scary to face zombies even in broad daylight because you never what will happen next. You might alert 20+ zombies or a player might hear your gunshots and hunt you down. There is a real survival component as well. You really are scrounging for everything you can lay your hands on because you start with almost nothing in an incredibly hostile world.

Some of the videos I watched on this showed the zombies glitching out and warping all over. Is it always that laggy? That's the only thing keeping me from being interested. That said, this is exactly the kind of zombie game everyone wants but has never been done correctly. No idea why more studios don't try a full game like this.

You need the original ArmA2 for Chernarus, which isn't part of OA.

played for a bit tonight, seems really fun. shot a guy who i thought was trying to shoot me but actually wasn't, felt kinda-bad. ran with a group, started with five, ended with two, we met up with another group and explored a town for a little bit, someone started shooting at us at a T intersection. one of us went down, I went to bandage him and then got shot in the head. kind of sucked to get shot in the head and killed instantly after two hours of exploring and fighting, but i guess that's part of the experience. i wish night wasn't completely, totally black though. 99% of players just crank their gamma/brightness all the way up because if you don't you're reduced to wandering aimlessly in the dark/towards flares. if it were more true-to-life darkness and less pitch black i think it'd be a lot better all around.

This game/mod is a nightmare to setup through steam. Is there a 100% working step-by-step somewhere? I feel like I did everything the forums said to do but now I'm going through this Six Updater program that I've never used before and I have no idea what is going on. I couldn't connect to servers normally before so I'm having to try this. This OP is really low effort in that regard.

1. create "@dayz" folder in your OA folder 2. create "addons" folder in @dayz folder 3. extract all the .rars there 4. start 6 updater - at the top there's a thing that you can click to sync with gamepsy server lists and ping other stuff, i ran through those just in case. 5. find day z server in updater 6. right click and add the server as a new preset (it'll pop up in the left 'pane') 7. right click the new preset and go down to update, choose update and install mods - it should open another tab where it lists the mods and extra things the server has on it 8. wait an eternity as it downloads various things at .5 kbs 9. add " -nosplash -mod=@dayz" to steam launch preferences 9. try to play. this is off the top of my head so it's not super detailed but that should be the gist of it semper wifi fucked around with this message at Apr 28, 2012 around 05:19 |

I was able to play fine without using it. protip: dont climb ladders when you have a pistol out, when you get at the top you unholster it and the animation makes you take a step back and you fall down unless you get lucky. I couldn't connect to servers normally before so I'm having to try this. This OP is really low effort in that regard. Honestly it seems a lot easier to use the Arma II Launcher (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8241) rather than Six Updater Download the 6 .rar files, extract their contents into your C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\@Dayz\Addons folder. You will need to make the @Dayz and Addons directories manually. Load up the Arma Launcher and look for the @Dayz folder on the left hand window. If it isnt showing up you have either not set up arma launcher properly or have not named the directories properly. Drag the @Dayz mod in the arma launcher to a group on the right side window. Then select Arma II CO in the bottom right hand pull-down menu and launch. Filter multiplayer servers by mission name - Dayz. If you're getting kicked off for no explanation, make sure you validate game files through steam and run both Arma II and OA separately at least once. This solves 99% of problems. As far as impressions, I've been having an absolute blast. I have a large group of friends with arma and we've been clearing towns in groups of 4-8 (really any more than 6 people begins to get cumbersome) ambushing other survivors, getting in gun fights with other bandits, and generally stalking everything living and dead throughout Chernarus. With a group that large, survival is reasonably easy however, as is finding decent equipment. You generally have the numbers to take on most groups but if you get into an extended fire fight, the benefit is rarely worth the risk. You have to be extremely careful where you shoot from and whom you shoot at - Is the lone survivor wandering through the field really alone or does he have two friends hidden in the tree line? Are you anywhere close to a town? If so your m24 is going to aggro all the zombies on you possibly killing you, giving away your position, and giving your enemies time to set up on you or retreat. Extended gunfire will draw other players to your location as well - you never know if someone is going to be coming up from behind you. The tension in the game is fantastic. On the other hand the game is a bit buggy and suffers all of the flaws that Arma II does - it's not a shooter, it's a simulation. Inventory items disappear, swimming (a requirement for filling your water bottle) can cause all your gear to fall off and be unrecoverable, zombie animations are terrible - they like to keep running for seconds after they've been killed, and the servers regularly go down for updates. There are some exploits of the persistence model as well that I'm not going to quite go into, which are being worked on as well. However it should be said that the developers are very active in fixing bugs and are likely to release 4-5 patches a day right now. Overall it's pretty exciting.

You don't have to swim to refill your water. Stand up and try to get waist deep and the prompt should appear. If it doesn't, move around a bit and keep trying. It saves you from losing your pack. Zombies go down in one body shot with the starting pistol by the way. Kilroy's videos are showcasing a much older version. I've never had them glitch that badly. For people having trouble installing. You don't have to use six updater unless you use a bunch of mods. That's all it's really there for. Go into your AO directory, make a folder and name it "@dayz". Inside that folder create another called "addons". Unzip the mod files and place them into that addons folder. Then set your AO/Combined operations launch parameters to "-mod=@dayz" to run the mod. And that's really it. Make sure to run steam as an administrator, verify cache integrity of both Arma 2 and AO and run as "combined operations". I'm using the steam version and it looks like this... ![]() Anytime there's an update to the mod, just download the new file and place it in that "addons" folder. Windows will tell you that file's already in there, click "move and replace". For those of you buying the game, I really wouldn't unless you have a good idea of what Arma is. Even if the mod was finished and polished, you're still dealing with Arma's Armaness. Play the free version first to get an idea what the controls, movement and gameplay is like. http://www.arma2.com/free Make sure to turn off post-processing in-game. Makes everything not blurry. Also feel free to ask other players anything. They're generally helpful. To text chat, use the "<" & ">" keys to select "side channel", then use the "/" key. \/\/\/ Just updated this post to answer that exact question. rizuhbull fucked around with this message at Apr 28, 2012 around 07:47 |

I'm surprised a big developer hasn't picked up on this concept yet. Combine this mod with: - a Dead Rising-like improvised melee weaponry system - hordes of slow zombies instead of a few fast ones - a bite infection system that forces you to find medicine or risk becoming a zombie - a hideout building option (with a stash, reinforceable barriers, night-time attacks, etc.) ... and you'd have a truly amazing game on your hands. That being said, definitely picking this up when I can grab the bundle on sale.
