Don't get old.

Just bought Arma 2 so I can play this game. It seems like this is the kind of game where it would be great to get a bunch of goons to just take over some territory and just kill/loot everything that comes through.

I was travelling with this poor blind fellow, he could only see 5m ahead so he would follow me closely like a little puppy. He ended up suffering an injury from the Arma gods because he glitched through a railing and broke his legs from the fall. I had to put a bullet through his brain to ease him of his misery. After that I realized he could have just suicided and i'm dumb.

Sometimes you reach a stalemate. Sometimes you get magic horses.

I remember one time in vanilla arma we were running one of those big country spanning missions and I threw down a green smoke grenade to mark our position so the helicopter pilot could find us. I accidentally hit our squad leader's leg with the marker and it broke. I had to put him down because he wouldn't stop screaming at me.

He is in a better place now.

Such is life in Arma. That, and climbing a ladder with a pistol is a death wish.

If you're free, get in NY1. We're taking the airfield.

Aim down at them, scroll with the mouse wheel or hit spacebar, and if it says anything other than "gear", they have something on them.

Make sure the little green M4 icon with bullets under it pops up before hitting G.

I played this last week and it was really cool but just like Zargabad/Chenarus Life it is full of spergs whom only mission is to kill anything that moves. I like how someone mentioned in the Arma 2 thread that its a murder simulation game, it really is. My first time playing DayZ was teaming up with 2 randoms then getting to a town and the guy goes to build a fire and drops a M67 on the ground and takes us all out. And when I got revived I took the guy's MP5 and then the server crashed.

If you don't like zombies, TAW.net is running a Wasteland (think Stalker) server which is fun but once again full of spergs, at least you can buy guns though and vehicles are easy to find (though most times they are usually out of gas or missing a tire).

I think that fits for this game though. You have every reason to kill people. You may need their food, water, guns and ammo. Maybe they are just to close and keep looking at you funny. You can't take any chances.

For some new players, here are some tips for staying alive in a big city:
- Stick to the walls or shrubary.
- Always watch around you.
- Always crouch(x) walk(holdshift) around corners
- Always respond if someone asks if you are friendly. Always say you are friendly even if you are not.
- Never enter the church without asking if it's friendly.
- If you need to go on the roof of a building, make sure everyone is friendly or no one is around. Also be drat quick about it.
- You should never shoot someone from the front, even if you have a headshot unless you are miles away. Two reasons for this. One is, people do not die instantly from headshots, so they can still kill you after you put 5 .45 bullets in his skull. And two, if they see who killed them, they will call you out on side chat and your rep is ruined for a bit.
- Never use the enfield in the city unless you need too.
- If you are ever getting chased by a huge mob of zombies, if you have ammo, run to the church. Zombies cannot run in the church.
- If you cannot find the church, run backwards, if you see them stop to attack, shoot one and keep running backwards.
- Do not stand on flares. Everyone does this and everyone dies. You will get picked off by some bandit 20 miles away with a CZ550.
- Avoid conflict. Even passive things like running into someone in a hallway or stairway. If you spook them they may just shoot, it happens a lot.
- Last is to never ever be to trusting. Your best bet is to avoid all human contact you can't comfirm friendly yourself(not hearsay).

Avoid me at all costs, unless you have stairs in your house and I know it.
Otherwise I will shoot you in the back of your head and take whatever you have that I want.

I'm in the NY1 server, but how do you suggest that we congregate?

Also, how do I lower my weapon as to not look threatening? Double tapping control doesn't seem to be doing it.

Also, the Fez soundtrack on shuffle is actually surprisingly effective for this, when solo.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Started playing this today, ran around for 45 minutes and the closest thing I saw to another living thing was a rabbit. Is the emptiness just a server thing? I also tried playing on one of the French servers and I spawned next to 5 zombies, but didn't get to see the rest of the area because I was kicked soon after.

If you get a chance and want to take out some bandits/survivors craftily in a large city or town, throw a whiskey bottle or smoke grenade at them.

It basically brings all of the zombies in the area to the location that it lands, meaning they get swarmed by every zombie in town.

I was doing really well, had a sniper rifle, plenty of food...Then I glitched my legs through a wall trying to loot a corpse. Dropped me down to 600 blood, and I bled out completely before I could start bandaging myself.

I'll just pretend the zed infection finally caught up to me.

Goons should throw up the lljk tag or something, so we can more quickly ID each other. I'll be [lljk] Ash, if you see me on any of the servers. I'll try to favor NY1, since that seems to be where other goons tend to hang out.

Are there other backpacks that let you carry more?

Looks like a new update just hit. They brought down most of the servers for it too.

Yeah there are packs that let you carry 20+ slots. The large coyote is the biggest but the alice pack is more common. No clue where to find them because I haven't seen one.

The lower weapon thing doesn't seem to work with pistols. With my Winchester it definitely works. Also the Winchester is awesome, there is tons of ammo for it, buckshot for zombies and slugs for players. It also doesn't drag every zombie in the town to you like the rifles for some reason.

So basically the only way to climb up a ladder safely before you find a rifle is to drop your gun at the bottom? I can work around it, but I wish there was a way around that.

I'd like to warn people about the legion server. There's a faction war going on most the time, so it's got a lot more PKing that the other servers, it seems. Also, they'll kick random pubbies at times to make room for their fellow clanmates. You're probably better off avoiding that server, since it's a pain to get on any during peak hours.

Try Arma 2 Free, can't play Dayz but it will let you know if you your computer can handle it. It will also let you figure out how to use the Byzantine control system before zombies start gnawing on your face.

OA seems to be far better optimized that Arma2, so if you get passable FPS on the free version, you should be shiny with the expansion.

You'll be able to see how DayZ will run since it runs the same map as A2F. OA, the expansion, runs a lot better because there's a lot less foliage.

I don't know if ArmA2 Free is running the same patch as the newest ArmA2 patch though.

Unless somethings changed since yesterday you don't have to download CBA or jayarmalib, try downloading the mod by itself from the sixupdater mods tab instead of downloading the mods that a given DayZ server has.

e: Also the manual DL for DayZ doesn't have either mod (http://www.armafiles.info/dayz/)
