The servers are reporting needing CBA and such but you don't need it.

Does the mod work with the retail version of Arma and OA? I saw some talk on the forums about compatiblity. Was thinking of buying retail rather than steam if I can shave a bit off the price. The youtube series is like a survivor horror movie...they discover their former friends are now roving murderers that are coming after them - in the wilderness - all amid ZOMBIES. To clarify, you can't just get OA without buying A2? There is no way OA runs with A2F that will allow the mod to work?

Just had a great run with a goon on the NY1 server. Everything went very well apart from me learning not to run in the city, and some dude taking me out. Also, vent dropping out as well. I'm still going right back in later tonight. Despite me getting sniped by some random dude while crossing a street, it was tense as hell, and extremely enjoyable. It put me in a cool mental place only really rivaled by a good PnP RPG session. You don't even have to try to role-play, it's just kind of intrinsic to the game. As far as the technical issues, it's suprisingly functional, and will only get better with time. I could see vehicles making this incredibly stupid in a great way. The only real downsides are due to the very nature of ArmA II itself, but that's to be expected.

PROTOSTORM!!! posted:To clarify, you can't just get OA without buying A2? There is no way OA runs with A2F that will allow the mod to work? No. The mod requires Combined Operations, and no, you can't combine Arma 2 Free with Arrowhead. Arma X Anniversary Edition costs only 30 pieces of gold on Steam and comes with all the DLC's and Armed Assault + Queen's Gambit and Cold War Crises + Resistance. You should get it just because the game series is awesome if you don't have any of them yet.

Arma 2 has built in locational voice chat? I'm just wondering how people interact with each other because on a huge island like that it seems silly just to have everyone in one vent server or something.

Downloaded/installed Arma2 from Steam Installed retail OA Now I'm getting the latest OA patch. Then I need to get the DayZ files, is sixupdater the best way to do that or should I just get them directly from the website?

Arma is also compatible with TeamSpeak's 3d sound, if you prefer the use of TS. Dotcom656 posted:Will this work if I own Arma 2 and OA on steam but NOT in the combined operations package? Absolutely. Combined Operations is Arma 2 and OA run together, so you get the engine improvements in OA and all the terrain and units in A2. It doesn't matter if you bought them separately or together.

Because I'm a cool dude, here are simple instructions for babby after you've installed ArmA II and Operation Arrowhead: 1. Download this file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/190044/%40DayZ.7z 2. Extract it to your OA root directory. 3. Add "-mod=@dayz" to the launch options under properties on Steam. 4. When you start Operation Arrowhead on Steam launch Combined Operations, and you can probably figure it out from there. We've been playing on the NY1 server. If it's full, just keep trying. The first time you join, it might take a while for things in the back end to set you up a character, so just chill out. I'll keep that file updated with the latest version for the foreseeable future. Now you are a big boy, go hoard loots and survive. You'll feel bad about killing me because I helped you. (No you won't.) dvorak fucked around with this message at Apr 29, 2012 around 02:25 |

I think NY1 is quite hosed right now, no body can connect but I'm still ingame. For the past 3 hours I've been running around on it as a ghost. A ghost that can shoot people in the face and zombies/players can't see, this glitch owns. I was stalking these 2 dudes and kept throwing smoke grenades at them. They didn't know what the gently caress was going on, I ended up shooting them in the face and stealing their guns and loot.

But man, I wish they'd do something about the day/night cycle. I can't play during my peak time because all the servers I play on are pitch black which makes not as much fun. I can still play, but where I logged last night would be a bad place to come back if its dark.

The best way to deal with night is to turn the in-game brightness and gamma up all the way. It's not a perfect solution, but it kind of looks like a black and white horror movie with really stark shadowing. It's cool in it's own right.

I was playing earlier and apparently there were anywhere from 2-7 zombies on the entire server at any point in time.

So maybe they could make the moon a mandatory feature for nights, because when its that dark, it sucks. But, I really don't want to change my gamma/brightness because I feel like I'm cheating even if I know others do it. Its silly, I know, but it feels wrong.

I think the mod's biggest problems right now are 1) lack of structure. Currently your only thing to do is get poo poo. If you shoot a zombie it's because he's in between you and some poo poo. If you shoot a player it's because you want his poo poo, or because he wants your poo poo etc. It'd be nice to either throw some toys in the sandbox or give it some structure, even if it is extremely basic, e.g. "it is permanently night and a horde of zombies have descended upon Chernarus. Survive." 2) lack of a single player mode. I seem to be the only person mentioning this but it bothers me at least I don't think not having a map is that big of a deal, considering that it can be easily solved by having a map of Chernarus open in a tab in the Steam browser and some simple observation of town signs. Giving you a watch would be nice though, considering realistically you'd have some idea of what time of day it is without having to guess where and the world the server is. i shit trains fucked around with this message at Apr 29, 2012 around 04:43 |

tehsid posted:I have no problem with the lack of map or compass. But I do think you should have a chance to spawn with one or the other. I found a compass quite early on in my current game and while its helped a lot, the map TropicalCoke linked (http://i.imgur.com/lyqSb.jpg) on page two has helped me a great deal, so it hasn't bothered me as much. Mind you, sometimes you can think you are some place and turn out to be far, far away. But I just have it open on another screen, try and find a town with a sign and use the map to find myself. If you have a chance to pick up a copy of the Arma X Anniversary boxed edition for cheap, it's got huge (80x60 cm) paper maps of Sahrani, Chernarus and Takistan that shows even single buildings. Plus postcards... I haven't found the maps useful before this. If you can't find a compass you can try to use your boy scout skills in figuring the general direction. Sun rises from an eastern direction and goes toward west, so by following it for a moment you might get a clue. If you have found a watch it should be easier - at mid day the sun is directly to the south, and so on. At night you can actually locate the North Star. The game has unlimited sperging potential.
