I've got a little bit of a story here. First I should preface that I've been trying to stick to low population servers (20 or less)till I've gotten a good handle on things, and as such I haven't really run into a whole lot of players, or killed any. But last night I got into my first standoff with a bandit. Here I am, running around the usual spots in Elektro as the sun is starting to come up, when I decide to duck into the cafe near the grocery store. Just as I pass under the stairs to check the far room, someone starts unloading on me from above with a Makarov. I dash into the room, turn around and keep my Remy 870 on the door, waiting for the guy to pursue. For a moment it's quiet, and then I hear the shuffle of a crouched player. At this point I've yet to see where I was being shot at from, so I'm a little freaked out from being caught completely unawares. I keep my gun on the door for another minute, and still not a peep from my would-be killer. So I decide to quickly patch up my bleeding, hoping the guy doesn't hear it and come to finish me off (though I'm at about 8k blood at this point). After another minute of silence, I start to wonder if the guy wandered off when he didn't immediately kill me. So I switch to third person and crawl over to the doorway. With some somewhat cheaty camera usage, I manage to peep round the corner without sticking my head out. At the top of the stairs there's this bandit just sitting there with his makarov, waiting for me to come out of the only exit from the room I'm in. So I decide to mess with him, and toss a green smoke grenade out the front door. Sadly, smoke grenades aren't great for hiding your position, and all I managed to do was call one zombie that was promptly shot by Mr. Stairs. So I toss a few flares to see if they'll call some more zombies, but none seem to notice. Finally I decide that he's not going anywhere, and I decide to try and take him out. For some reason I thought that trying to throw a grenade up the stairs would be manageable with ARMA's throwing system, and of course nearly bounce the drat thing back in my face. Immediately I run round the corner to avoid a shrapnel sandwich. When the dust clears, I peek round again to find my hunter undeterred by the close range explosion. However, this time he catches me peeping, and starts firing at the door frame. Finally I decide I'm sick of him, step round the corner (and falling on the floor because he apparently shot one of my bones) and unloading a full clip of buckshot into his face. After crawling my rear end up the stairs and popping some morphine, I promptly took his two cans of beans and ate them, and left the rest of him to the crows. I felt pretty good until I got sniped from a hill ten minutes later, while trying to skin a goat. Man, this game.

Did anyone else see any of those "ghosts" last night? The leftover player's who have no names, just survivor/bandit (and I even saw a Rifleman), and are mostly just standing in place? I saw about 5 or 6 in the server I was in, and I thought it was creepy. Then a few of them moved while I was watching, and I was officially creeped the gently caress out. I got some video of it, and I'll try to get it up later today.

Did you ever see any of them move at all?

One thing I haven't been able to get a clear answer on yet is whether the direct microphone chat works or not. I bound the Direct Voice Chat button, but nobody seems to be able to hear me. As far as I can tell it works sometimes for some people, but I've yet to have any success with it. There doesn't even seem to be any way to tell int the ArmA 2 options whether your mic is working or not. Anyone got the skinny on this?

Am I the only person that prefers playing at night in-game? Whenever I play in a day server I seem to have a high propensity to get shot, especially by snipers. I just find it so much easier to sneak around at night and scavenge, especially in Cherno/Elektro, which I now completely avoid during the day. EDIT: I also had my first experience using the Lee Enfield today...in a city. I picked it up off a dead guy shortly after spawning, on a whim and to see if it really deserved the name Dinnerbell. Aggroed a zombie by the Cherno northern apartments, and decided it was time to test out the rifle (plus I had burned through all my Mak ammo.) Ducked into the doorway of one of the apartments and fired a round, downing the zombie in a single shot. Suddenly, it seems like there's zombie yells in every direction. I figure at this point I should just run upstairs and take out the approaching horde as the stop to shuffle indoors, taking care to stay away from the walls to avoid clipping attacks. What I wasn't expecting was zombies attacking through/clipping through the bloody floor . So I lead the zombies on a merry chase through the building, picking them off with the Enfield as they git stuck on the walls. After clearing out all 40 or so, I figure I'd taken out all the zombies spawned in the area. About a minute after I downed the last zombie, I hear the aggro yell again. Looking out the window, I see another 30-40 zombies running toward the building from the inner city. At this point I'm too low on ammo to take them all out. I attempt to avoid being eaten by attempting to jump off a balcony, but to no avail. Finally I fall to the growing hoard. But during that fight my zombie kills went from 3 to 68, and buggyness aside the whole thing was a pretty tense affair. Also screw the Enfield. So, last night was absolutely crazy. We/I: -Saw somebody land a C-130 on the coastal highway, without exploding even. -Got picked up by some guy in a Chinook who was saving people trapped on rooftops. -Saw a 3 Humvee convoy driving across the coastal roads, occasionally crashing and having to replace exploded tires. -Got to spend some time in the back of a BTR. -Later saw said BTR shock and awe some guy at the Balota medical tents. It even drove right over the sandbags. -Much later saw the same BTR show up at the NW airfield. It blew up the control tower, which is apparently destructible. The chat was in an uproar. -Fell out of a helicopter and instantly died when I hit the side of it. Sure, the guy was no doubt cheating, but it was cool to be in the same server seeing his crazy hijinks.

So I decided to try something a little different than the usual lone wolfing tonight. I thought I'd try one of them "social experiments" Rocket was talking about, and set up a blood clinic to transfuse people, despite the obvious danger. So I loaded up my ALICE pack with blood packs, painkillers, and bandages, and headed to the 2nd tallish building across from North Cherno hospital. After informing the server of my intentions to heal people over chat, reactions were expectedly mixed and skeptical. However after I made my case, a few people expressed interest in being healed, and headed my way, which was surprising. Of course, just as my first customers were showing up, so did two geared up dudes with M4 and DMRs. They of course killed me, as I didn't shoot back. They even killed one of the dudes coming for blood. But then another surprise occurred, as the rest of the folks arriving in Cherno for blood hunted the two guys down and killed them. Unfortunately, before I could continue attempting to heal people a hacker showed up with his Littlebird, and blew everybody up everywhere with rockets and ESP. Somewhat heartened by people's reaction, I switched servers to start again. Sadly everybody was killed after a few minutes simultaneously by yet another hacker using a kill-all hack. I'm planning on trying this again in future, though perhaps with some help next time. If any of ya'll are interested in taking a break from eating pubbies, feel free to hit me up on Steam under the same name.

Coming back to this after a week or two, I've noticed that despite doing the beta patch and changing the Steam launch options to launch the beta+dayZ most servers still say I only have 1.60 installed. I'm running the beta patcher right now, and I can't tell if I'm doing it right. It says that it takes a long time, but the bar shoots up to 100% after 30 seconds or so. What I'm a tad confused by is it just says its installing the 1.60 patch, and not the current beta patch #. Am I just not waiting long enough before hitting ok? I'd rather sort this out now that the beta patch is mandatory.

Man, gently caress boats. Last night a friend and I were up by Black Lake, on the coast side, when I spot a small boat way out in the water. Having never seen the drivable boat before, I'm wasn't sure if it was usable or just one of the prop boats. After watching it with binoculars for a moment, I decide it might be the drivable one, since it seems to be bobbing in the waves. So I drop all my stuff on the beach, where my friend stays to guard it and lookout for anyone. After what feels like swimming forever, I finally reached the boat only to discover what I had suspected while swimming over. It was in fact a usable boat, and it was completely out of fuel. Cursing my own foolishness, I hop out to start swimming back when suddenly -No message from server- pops up. The server goes down, and we decide to wait for it to restart and rejoin to see if somehow my stuff is still salvageable. When it comes back up, I discover two terrible things: I suddenly have all my items with me, and I spawned inside the boat. For a moment I'm fine, and afraid to move. I decide to look up to see if I can board the boat to escape my predicament, and that's when I get the inevitable broken bone sound followed by death. The moral of this story? gently caress boats.

I must of had Rocket on my side or something tonight, because I found two downed helicopters within twenty minutes of each other. One was just sitting in the big field west of Stary, and I finally snagged my first M107 from that. The other though was smack dab in the middle of the two runways at the NWAF. Surprisingly there wasn't anyone there either, but the chopper only had about 30-40 STANAG mags by it. Still, it felt pretty awesome finding two of them that close together. The server was US557, if anyone else wants to try their luck, though I've no idea if those reset with restarts or not.

We also managed to find a broken down military truck, which obviously proved easy to fix with the tons of parts in the chest. Within 20 minutes we were decked out in ghillie suits with silenced assault rifles, cruising around in a truck filled to the brim with weapons and supplies, going around to view various sights on the map that we would never otherwise bother going to, such as Misty Peak (the highest point on the map) and some giant dam up north. Those are the ammo boxes that hackers use to kit themselves up on a new life.

It seems I've finally benefited from the wanton actions of a hacker not just using the kill all script. When I spawned into Otmel in a rather full server, the first thing I see is the giant pyre of a burning helicopter right in front of me. Drawing near, I notice the ground all around the heli is littered with bodies, most of them seemingly fresh spawns with Patrol packs, though a few had guns. As I start to riffle through the bodies, I suddenly get shot at by someone from an unknown direction. Assuming the shooter might be on the steep hill directly above the wreck, I run to the base of it and the shooting stops. Realizing I was now probably screwed and having nothing to lose, I charge up the hill to face my killer. However, after a few minutes of running around I realize there's no one around. Perhaps they disconnected? By this point my friend who spawned in Elektro has nearly arrived, following the tower of smoke. Just as I look down the road to spot her, we both notice a friggin bus just down the road. At first we think one of the tires looks busted, but I get in and gun it to see. The bus is in perfect shape. Stopping to search the bodies, we find two Camo SD G36's and no ammo (they're grey listed right?). Happy with this new life, we head off to Berezino only to encounter and nearly run over a fresh spawn (I thought he was a zombie, standing in the road) and he hops on the party bus. We arrive at Berezino, head to the military camp, and I accidentally run over one of the military tents with the bus, and then it gets stuck on a fire barrel. Just as we finally free it, the server goes down. We decide to call it a night. I can only hope that we don't suffer too terrible a fate for being in a vehicle when we got disconnected.

Finally found somebody's little duping tent city up in the north, with all sorts of M4's and AKs, a tractor, 15 or so NVG's, and my very first AS50. Unfortunately when I pick up and wear a ghillie suit it turns my ALICE pack into a patrol pack (?). My friend and I take our fill of the loot, and since the tractor is a one-seater I put a round from the AS through the engine. We run off giggling into the forest at our fortune, and disconnect. Only afterwards do I realize I should have run over the 13 or so tents with the tractor first.

It seems that hackers are getting more creative at randomly murdering people. Tonight, a friend and I were the only people on a server we frequent, and met up at the well-stocked tent city that somehow hasn't been destroyed yet. Then one other guy joins, but we figure the chances of him being nearby are small. Then, as we're leaving the tents my friend points out that she can hear an extra set of footsteps out of sync with ours. It clear that someone is there when we hear someone go prone. Then, before we can even determine where they are, the person explodes and a body suddenly appears. Luckily he didn't get close enough to either of us to do damage. Then about 5 minutes later he's still invisible, teleports to us and guns us down. When I point out that he's the obvious hacker, he just smugly replies that he can easily unban himself. DayZ.

Had another "everyone teleported to one place" script happen on a supposedly up-to-date server. It wasn't a thunderdome, just everyone on top of each other outside of Cherno. I managed to return to the scene of carnage about 10 minutes later to loot the bodies of everyone who didn't make it. While digging through the scattered bodies (and under the watchful eye of a standing corpse that turned towards me when I hatcheted it) I seem to have found an odd hacker's toy. One of the bodies had a Revolver gold (uncapitalized like that) I swapped out with my empty Glock. I haven't fired it yet, and I was just wondering if it's any different or just a reskin from like PMC or something.
