Day Z is a zombie survival modification for "Arma 2" and it's stand-alone expansion "Operation Arrowhead". It is currently in early alpha and frequently updated.

You start spawned on the coast of Chernarus, a fictional post-soviet state based on satellite photos of the Czech Republic.
You're given little but a gun with only a few clips, some flares and small amounts water and food. From there, you must do whatever it takes survive. Be it scavenging in abandoned buildings looking for food or weapons, to fighting hoards of zombies with your friends. Perma-death is always on. Meaning if you die, you must restart as a new character with starter gear and in one of the semi-random spawn locations.

Should I buy Arma 2 + OA just for this mod?
Arma 2 and to a lesser extent OA, are both buggy, confusing to learn and awkward at times, but if you can look past it's flaws, you'll find some of gaming's most amazing and memorable moments.

Zombies are fast, can climb and swim. They have to stop to attack however. It's best to shoot them as quickly and accurately as possible when they're after you. Go for body shots. They can also be found playing dead on the ground, be careful you don't get too close or they'll bite. The undead can only hurt and kill you, there is no infection mechanic. Once they notice someone, they'll enter a rage state with a howl/yell, give chase and never stop. Some zombies have been known to not give off any vocal ques, making them stealthy.
"Monkey" zombies are a special type of undead who move along on all fours. They're slow and much easier to kill than regulars.

Loot is rare and extremely valuable. Weapons, ammo, food, water, medical supplies, flares, navigation and lighting equipment are all essential for survival. These can only be found in settlements.
Towns, cities, farms, etc. The bigger the settlement the better the loot, but also the higher concentration of undead. It's all about risk vs reward. Are you going to raid the outlying farms for the basics? Or are you venturing into a city of undead with
fellow survivors for the best gear? The type of loot you find is dependent on the settlement. Military outposts contain military-grade equipment, hospitals contain blood packs and medicine, barns and houses have winchester shotguns and rifles with scopes, etc.

PVP is an everchanging affair. You can team up with fellow players and go for strength in numbers, or hunt others for their supplies. Players who frequently shoot others are deemed "bandits" and given a different skin to make them distinguishable. Giving you an idea who's trustworthy and who's not. This is measured via a "humanity" counter. If your humanity drops below a threshold, you become a bandit. You can drop your humanity by shooting other players first (shot players are given two minutes to fire back without penalty). You raise humanity by healing others.

Weapons are custom and varied. Civilian weapons like rifles, crossbows and pistols are standard. But this being a post soviet state, AKs and other military grade firearms can be found.
NVG are some of the rarest and most sought after pieces of loot. Giving you an extreme advantage in the night, NVGs can be countered with flares and laying low. Crossbows while fairly weak, have reusable bolts and are silent to both players and zombies (everyone within a couple miles will hear your gunshots and where they're comin' from).

Vehicles are a pain in the rear end, but offer unprecedented bonuses. They always appear broken down (except boats) and in need of repair. You can find repair parts scattered among the other loot. Various cars, trucks, jeeps, humvees, helicopters and boats are all obtainable. The commitment a vehicle requires will reward you with mobility far surpassing that of every player on foot, with some land vehicles having additional cargo space to store items, and a few helicopters come with heavy defensive firepower with ammo at the ready.

Emplacements will appear in later versions. Sandbags, tents (already in-game) and possible safe zone(s) are yet to be added but on the devs "to do" list. There's currently a "entrenchment tool" in the form of a spade in the game, but it requires an engineer pack and I have no idea what those do together.

Provisions include food, water and soda. You start with a refillable water canteen that can be filled at any water source (even the ocean for some reason). You have an easy to understand color guage on the right side of your screen. Green means you're all good. A red water icon means thirsty, red meal icon means hungry, etc. Next to those you also have a blood drop icon which includes a plus + sign when bleeding.

Navigation is important. Maps, watches and compasses are very valuable. To know which way is north, what time it is, where you are and knowing where you need to go can save you a lot of time and better keep you away from zombies. GPSes are rare but also in-game.

Medical system. You can bleed, break bones and experience pain. Lose too much blood and your screen will turn a white hue and you'll pass out and fall over frequently. Break a bone and you can't walk much less run. Under pain you'll shake uncontrollably, making aiming in first person difficult. Blood is regained from blood packs or by eating food. Pain can be stopped with painkillers. Bleeding is healed with bandages. Broken bones are fixed with morphine.
Bleeding can also be seen visually by everyone (it's pretty dramatic). Once you're incapacitated, an hour glass will let you know how much time you have left before death. If a nearby player has the appropriate supplies, they can revive you.

Day/Night cycle. Right now the cycle goes by a 1:1 time frame. All servers imitate real time. If it's dark where the server is located, it's dark in-game. Night-time is a very different game from playing in the day with sunlight. Zombies are the same, but it's generally pitch fuckin' black. Which is why you start with flares. Take notice that flares also make you a giant target to everyone else.

Stealth plays a large role. Zombies are very vocal about being alarmed. You can get pretty close to them by moving slowly and staying low. You have an ear and eye icon on the right side of your screen that tells you how much noise you're making, and how visible you are. You can also throw empty whiskey bottles and smoke grenades to create a distraction.

Hunting is the safest way to collect food. To do so, you'll need matches to start a fire, raw meat taken from an animal, a knife to gut the animal for it's meat, and a weapon to kill the animal. Cooked meat is the greatest healing and food item in the game.

Why don't they add more servers? They're always full!
They have been. There were four servers in the beginning. That number has since skyrocketed to ten+ in less than a week. Everyone's trying to keep up with the mod's popularity, but it's not easy to do because of the money involved in running a server. The quickest way to get into a server is to click "join" in the server list for the server you want to join, then after you get the "number of players are maximum" message, just keep hitting spacebar or the enter key.

What's the deal with zombies?
Arma 2's engine tells civilians to run in random patterns to reach their destination. This means zig-zags, curves and sometimes straight towards you. Because of the engine, civilians can also glitch through walls occasionally. This has nothing to do with the mod.

I don't have a compass; how do I know where to go?
Arma is spergy heaven, in that the sun raises in the East and sets in the West. Use this and the maps in the PGS thread to navigate.
At night you can use the North star. It follows the same path as the sun.

Why do some servers require a version number I don't have, and how do I get it?
Connecting to beta servers is simple. First things first, go to the ArmA II Beta Patch website and grab the latest version listed at the top. Once downloaded and ran, it will install like a mod, into its own addon folder. Go to your operation arrowhead install directory, then locate and edit "_runA2CO_beta.cmd" in notepad. Near the bottom you will see a few lines pointing to the beta executable and two -mod strings. Add ";@DayZ" to the end of the first, then save the file, and run it. Create a desktop shortcut to it if you'd like.

Note: Because this uses a different executable, I don't know how to get it working with the steam overlay. I haven't had luck simply adding -mod strings to my launch options in steam, I've always had to run through the cmd files. -A Lamer

How do I tell what vehicles are repairable and what aren't?
"Wrecks" are for decoration and cover and can be discerned from their hosed up state. Usually missing tires, doors, etc. Repairable vehicles will allow you to get in them even when broken. Over time, you'll be able to tell from a distance what's a wreck and what's repairable.

It's hard to refill my canteen, and when I do I lose my pack?
These are both bugged to poo poo. You generally need to be at least waist deep but not swimming in the ocean to get the "refill canteen" prompt. To refill it in ponds and lakes, you must swim. This has the side-effect of sometimes losing your pack. This seems random as I've swam fine without losing anything at times, while losing my poo poo instantly at others. It's a better idea to drop your canteen and use strictly soda because of it's abundancy.

To run Dayz, you need Arma 2 and the expansion Operation Arrowhead. You can get them separately, or bundled together as Arma 2: Combined Operations. You can also get Arma X: Anniversary Edition, which includes Arma 1 and 2 with all expansions and DLC. If you only intend to play Dayz, you are best of buying Combined Operations.

Buy Arma 2 Combined Operation.
The developers online store has it for $ 27.55 USD.
https://store.bistudio.com/arma2-combined-operations
Or Steam has it for $29.99.

https://store.bistudio.com/armax-aniversary-edition
Or Steam has it for $59.99.

Once you own the games, and have them downloaded and installed, you need to download the Dayz files. Remember, these update ALL THE TIME, so check back often to make sure you are up to date.

I have linked directly to the site, because they change there file hosting as much as they update the game, so just click on the "DayZ Mod Files" text to get to the latest host.

Fellow goon dvorak is also keeping the files mirrored and he will do his best to keep them up to date. Thanks!

To install Dayz to the the Steam version, follow this guide.

quote:

1.) Make @dayz folder in
#:\#\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead

2.) Make Addons folder within the @dayz folder
Your folder stucture should look like arma 2 operation arrowhead > @days > Addons

3.) Extract all downloaded files to this Addons folder

4.) In steam, right click on ARMA2: Operation Arrowhead, select 'Launch Options' and type -nosplash -mod=@dayz

5.)Load ARMA2: Operation Arrowhead through steam and choose the Launch ARMA2: Combined Operations option.

To install Dayz on a non steam install, follow this guide.

quote:

1.) Make @dayz folder in

2.) Make Addons folder within the @dayz folder
Your folder stucture should look like arma 2 operation arrowhead > @days > Addons

3.) Extract all downloaded files to this Addons folder

4.) Create a shortcut to Operation Arrowhead on the desktop (or where ever), right click on it and go to the Shortcut tab. Add -nosplash -mod=@dayz after the quotes at the end of the target line.

5.)Load ARMA2: Operation Arrowhead

There are also programs you can use to auto install and update, but I don't use them because I like to keep things fresh.
Two guides have been posted in this thread for two different programs, I'll quote them here.

Download the 6 .rar files, extract their contents into your C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\@Dayz\Addons folder. You will need to make the @Dayz and Addons directories manually.

Load up the Arma Launcher and look for the @Dayz folder on the left hand window. If it isnt showing up you have either not set up arma launcher properly or have not named the directories properly. Drag the @Dayz mod in the arma launcher to a group on the right side window. Then select Arma II CO in the bottom right hand pull-down menu and launch.

5. find day z server in updater
6. right click and add the server as a new preset (it'll pop up in the left 'pane')
7. right click the new preset and go down to update, choose update and install mods - it should open another tab where it lists the mods and extra things the server has on it
8. wait an eternity as it downloads various things at .5 kbs
9. add " -nosplash -mod=@dayz" to steam launch preferences
9. try to play.

To check servers, use Day Z Commander.

Please take note that this is a very early version of the mod being shown. The combat is nowhere near that laggy, nor do you start with a revolver anymore.

That'd be awesome if anyone wants to try. I think because of the saving system. It's supposed to save your stats, equipment and location every five minutes to the developer's servers. But it's so glitchy at this time I wouldn't rely on it. You can carry over your character to any of the servers though, so that's pretty cool.

SniperX posted:

Does that mean there are randomized spawn in locations and you actually have to find each other.... sounds brutal.... I like it.
Well kinda. There's a set number of spawn points and they're all along the south eastern coast. So it's not as if you can spawn on the other side of the map from a friend, but it does take a bit to find each other. Meeting up at a landmark is the quickest way.

Here's the group...

We'll probably have to keep joining different servers because of the mod's popularity. They get crowded during prime time hours.

I'm not doing poo poo today, so I'm gonna hop on. Let me know if anyone needs help installing the mod. It's incredibly easy as far as Arma mods go.

It's a lot like minecraft in that you need to make your own fun. People who need objectives given to them will probably get bored. Imaginative people will trek it lone wolf, form up roving gangs, help other players, clear out major settlements, etc. I just got done playing a game in a server where several guys set up a safe zone in a city around the spawn points. One guy was focusing solely on being a medic. Had a poo poo ton of humanity because of it. It's rough around the edges but definitely playable. I just want them to hurry up and put vehicles back in and add more variety in the weapons. I found a two hundred round belt for a saw, but only a handful of similar guns. I will admit, hunting rifle wielders with a saw machinegun in the dead of night sounds hilarious.

I've been doing mostly lone wolf hunting and raiding towns when I have the ammo for it. Hunting rabbits with a winchester can be remarkably fun and intense when anyone can run into you in the forest.

You don't have to swim to refill your water. Stand up and try to get waist deep and the prompt should appear. If it doesn't, move around a bit and keep trying. It saves you from losing your pack. Zombies go down in one body shot with the starting pistol by the way. Kilroy's videos are showcasing a much older version. I've never had them glitch that badly.

For people having trouble installing. You don't have to use six updater unless you use a bunch of mods. That's all it's really there for. Go into your AO directory, make a folder and name it "@dayz". Inside that folder create another called "addons". Unzip the mod files and place them into that addons folder. Then set your AO/Combined operations launch parameters to "-mod=@dayz" to run the mod. And that's really it.

Make sure to run steam as an administrator, verify cache integrity of both Arma 2 and AO and run as "combined operations".

I'm using the steam version and it looks like this...

Anytime there's an update to the mod, just download the new file and place it in that "addons" folder. Windows will tell you that file's already in there, click "move and replace".

For those of you buying the game, I really wouldn't unless you have a good idea of what Arma is. Even if the mod was finished and polished, you're still dealing with Arma's Armaness. Play the free version first to get an idea what the controls, movement and gameplay is like.

http://www.arma2.com/free

Make sure to turn off post-processing in-game. Makes everything not blurry. Also feel free to ask other players anything. They're generally helpful. To text chat, use the "<" & ">" keys to select "side channel", then use the "/" key.

4GB RAM
Dual Core CPU (Quad recommended)
10Mbps down, 5Mbps up (considered a minimum for ~25 players, can spike well above)
Able to run the custom HIVE console EXE application

Agreed. I ran into a group of three dudes in a small inland town, asked the goon vent if they knew 'em while asking the strangers if they were friendly in the game's text chat. Strangers said friendly, vent goons said one of 'em was a PKer. As soon as they aggro'd the zombies I shot one with my CZ, one ran off with ten zombies after him, and I eventually found and killed the last guy trying to bandage himself in a barn. The mod probably works by procedurally spawning zombies according to where players are. I.e. when a player comes within X meters to a town, zombies are spawned. The lag I've found is minimal at worst. The zombies running patterns are what make hitting them hard. They almost never run straight towards you. They zig zag, curve and sometimes they'll run a circle or two around you before going to attack. I think this is because of how the game's A.I. works and not intentional from the mod. Either way, I like it.

All for this idea. We need a place to set up camp and build our force's strength. Some place hidden from the pubbies, but large and flat enough to land a helicopter.

We need tents to house resources. Medical supplies, food & water, navigational equipment, weapons & ammo, vehicle parts, etc. Vehicles to quickly and easily raid any location we please and pick up fellow goons. Uaz's, little birds, attack choppers, etc. And when fortifications are in, we entrench the entire area making it impossible for pubbies to get our stuff. Something like a turret or multiple sandbags randomly placed would make it a nightmare for an intruder to enter without a goon or two outmaneuvering him.
Someone calls out the location of camp? We pack up as much as possible and move it elsewhere.

Within the week, we could have M4's, Remingtons, revolvers, CZs, NVGs and other top-tier items ready to be given out to those raiding for more gear. Which would snowball until we own the server.

It took almost three hours, but I finally got a car operational. Yeah it's a dumpy four door with no cargo space; but it's fast as hell. The only thing it's missing are some windows (which are optional) and the engine parts (which didn't stop me from hitting 80+ in under 5 secs). And it's weird, but the damaged engine didn't seem to affect anything. The steering is fine, acceleration and top speed are fine. What's the point of fixing the engine? It's almost got a full tank of gas and even a front windshield I put on. Might add a bit of protection.

All I need now are some tents, a location and some rag-tag group of goons.

I'm thinking since it's by the NW airfield, we make a couple stops around nearby towns picking up what we need to repair the huey. Failing that, we can just find a place to set up shop, which would take no time at all with a car.
I haven't seen anyone so it's been relatively safe. I did run into two bandits, but I cornered them in a building, shot one and then throw a grenade. Last guy closed the door, hid in a room and went prone with his winchester. So I switched to full auto on my m4, walked in, opened the door and ripped him apart before he got a shot off. Found an spade on his person, now I just need an engineer pack.

NY2. I'm done for the night, but tomorrow, we ride.

Gah, just got killed by two guys. The exchange of words went something like this:

I spot them and tell them i'm friendly.

"Hey guys, I just found some rifle ammo you might be interested in."

*silence*

"Yeah. We are."

Then they gunned me down like a rabid dog. This mod owns even though I just lost a 6 hour character.

Edit: oh btw, are the Arma singleplaying missions good? I am familiar with the controls now and did all the tutorials.
They're not bad, but you might have more fun trying out player designed missions.

Had an encounter with a bandit yesterday, i had a Winchester with pellets and he had a assaultrifle with a red dot sight on it. After he died i snagged that rifle, a G17 and a lot of nice crap of him. However im kinda starting to regret ditching the winchester, the rifle is SO LOUD and the winchester had that good spread. Should i keep the rifle or try to get something else instead? Also is the G17 any good?
The G17 is weak. It can hold 17 rounds but you'll burn through them quickly. The Winchester with pellets is definitely one of if not the best anti-zombie weapon I've found, but the ARs with red dot sights are awesome. Point and shoot, very accurate.

I'd go with the AR because of it's versatility. Pellets aren't so effective against other players, so you're kinda screwed. ARs on the other hand can drop anything at most ranges.

Agreed /\/\/\. I tried being friendly, but after a couple days of being shot in the back, you learn you'll survive a lot longer by being the bigger rear end in a top hat.

Dongattack posted:

Okay, sweet, i'll pop into the editor later then and learn it's bulletdrop. Are there even silenced weapons in this mod except the crossbow? A silenced pistol would be the bees knees, but seems like the holy grail.
There are. I picked up a silenced M9 at the NW airfield. Was pretty great. Powerful, silent, ammo's scarce though. There's also silenced M4 rounds I found. Another goon found FAL ammo too, but that's not silenced, just cool.

So I can apparently fly. As in take off, go somewhere, and land more or less without killing everyone.
I scored a destroyed but somehow still fuctional huey and gonna meet up with some goons who have vehicle parts to repair it with. We're in NY3 if anyone wants to lend a hand. You should probably only come if you have a strong stomach and an apathetic attitude towards life.

I wouldn't bother. The engine won't start back up. It seems vehicles will start once, but after you turn 'em off, it recognizes the engine is dead. I started a car with a destroyed engine because of where it spawned, and now a heli. but neither will start back up again. Probably a glitch, they shouldn't start up to begin with.

Please head to the new thread here.

Don't want dirty pubbies learnin' our secrets. Also the OP isn't finished there yet, so you can suggest additions but no bitching.

Someone mind writing up a FAQ for all the repeat questions the thread's getting?
Stuff like how do tents work, why can't I climb a ladder with a pistol, what's the beta patch 1.60.92000 about, etc.

That they are. You can practice using smoke grenades. There are tons at our Stary Sobor camp.

Try verifying the game's cache integrity via Steam if you can. Both Arma 2 and OA.

It stopped me from being able to help these dudes in Cherno finish building a helicopter because I couldn't respond to them and I just ran away so they didn't kill me because of it.
