Is this representative of the current state of the mod? Because it looks glitchy and not fun at all, much like Arma.

The mod is in early alpha state... wait some months if you want something polished.

My personal wishlist after playing all morning with goons on NY1:

-Double zombie count
-Make them all walk
-Keep drops at about the same rate.

Right now the threat of the zombies is there but in a completely game-limited way. Traditionally 'the zombie threat' is a matter of resources - you and 30 bullets against 100 zombies. While there certainly is the matter of resource management in Day Z - it is more a matter that due to the skipping & rubber banding of the server overloading trying to handle tons of sprinting zombies, you end up expending extra ammo just trying to hit the target.

Simply increasing the overall hostile count, while making them more of an undead wave that you can avoid but not perfectly would increase things tremendously.

Otherwise there is tremendous potential here.

How many players and zombies have the average server?
Like... a loving lot, doesn't it?

There you go, the Arma 2 engine is not magical. I have played very smooth missions with only 8 friends and 35 enemies, but play with 60 players and 250 enemies and baam: lag, rubber banding, skipping animations, instability in the server, etc.
They are too ambitious.

The developer, while extremely talented, is just sort of full himself, which is why he spouts off nonsense like that. Trust me, when people start losing interest in his "piece of art", he will start making more goal-drive gameplay to bring them back.

I don't even think that goal-driven gameplay would be in opposition to the emotions he wants his mod to produce, but it would help.

I don't know about you, but past the first days I need some real goals to have interest in the game, just getting food/water/ammo to survive is boring. These are low level goals, I need some high level goals to aim for, the reasons to try to survive in first place. And if I don't have interest in the game, it's hard to have the feelings and emotions of fear, paranoia, etc he wants the mod to have.

DayZ is now an official part of Combined Operations, and they're going to add the mod to the game in an upcoming patch.

They don't say anything like that.

I know that Combined Ops is Arma 2 + Arrowhead. I read that I can play the arma 2 free demo and buy arrowhead and play the mod? Saves me $10.00. I have no interest in Arma.

What if anything, besides Arma 2 single player, do I miss out on if I do this?

You will have very lovely textures for the landscape.

Ugh, I can't even get Combined Operations to start.

Some DOS flashes on the screen, too fast for me to read, then goes away without the game ever launching.

Try to run the game manually, double clicking the .exe.

The last player I bumped in to I said "friendly", he replied "too" and as I wen to walk off he shot me in the back. I'm killing everyone on sight from now on.

Heh, I wonder why people do that.
I mean, asking if someone is friendly or not? What people expect?

If someone is friendly, he will say "friendly".
But he someone is not friendly and plans to kill you, he also will say "friendly"

Do anyone think the player killers will answer "not friendly"??

Again, it comes down to: does he want wide appeal, or does he want a tiny loyal crew of spergs? Hint: the reason the mod is so popular isn't because people like Roguelikes, it's because they like Zombies. Most of the people play this game despite the punishing difficulty, not because of it.

Of course we know the answer to my question, though.

Bravo, that's the issue. People play because the concept is really great and grandious. An open sandbox / survival zombie apocalypse game with free pve-pvp. Just fantastic.

But that doesn't mean people are playing it because the love the crippling difficulty. Oone thing is survival, another have barely any food spawning, and being sick because an unrealistic cold, and not having a simple map, and putting super black nights, and now not spawning with a pistol, and etc etc.
They are playing despite it.

The funny thing is that he considers the game's success as a vindication of that super-hardcore style!

This game looks awesome but the Arma engine is kind of poo poo so I hope he forks it out to a different engine at some point, with proper support.

But if it turns out like minecraft then welp

Yes I am sure he will press a button and "fork it to a different engine".

Takistan and the other desert maps are actually pretty neat, you can enter and blow up almost every building. It'd be cool to see how that would affect loot spawns.

I think this is one of the flaws of the actual Dayz. It's in Chernarus, which a a big and beautiful map, but unlike the OA maps, most buildings can't be entered. Given the game is about survival and looting to survive, it would be more interesting if most building could be enterable.

The only reason its in this engine is probably to save the trouble of designing the world and assets. As it is, the only thing he had to do was alter the player entities and add in zombies and tweak things.

The unreal engine or literally anything else would not be %10 as lovely as the ARMA engine.

Do you think the UE engine (or whatever else) would move a 225mk2 landscape highly detailed with hundreds thousands objects, with hundreds of simulated AI entities and dozens of players easily??
Even stuff of how moddable in the game affects the performance, as it affects the structure chosen by the developers.

Hint: the performance wouldn't be that different.

Arma II is and has been the #1 selling game on steam for like 3+ weeks now. BIS would have to be the dumbest developer in existence for DayZ to not be a game mode in base Arma3.

Not, that would be very dumb.

DayZ will be a DLC / expansion for Arma 3. That way people will have to buy both Arma 3 AND Dayz.
