How do I chat in this game? I can see other people writing stuff but mashing the regular chat buttons do nothing.

I'm going to dick around with the ARMA 2 demo tonight, and as long as it doesn't run like poo poo I'll start keeping an eye out for a Steam sale.

How complicated is it to functionally play ARMA? 1-10, with 1 being an actual Roguelike with no instruction manual, 5 being I guess an old Mechwarrior game, and 10 being playing with a dog.

Turn those incomprehensible controls up to 11 .

Is there a point to traveling inland? They seem to put all the huge cities right on the coast where people spawn, and that's where all the action tends to stay.

There're loads of villages of barns scattered with goodies in them, I felt much safer when inland than on the coast.

Some games, despite how difficult they are, pretty much promise that you'll kill dozens of enemies regardless of how well you do. ArmA 2 will slap you across the face if you ask for the same promise.

How do I see this tag on other players?

It seems like saving on at least a couple of the servers is broken right now. You'll just end up popping back at an earlier saved state if you disconnect or die. I know the United Operations servers are messed up, does anyone know if any of the others work?

It happened to all the servers I've been to, must be a problem along the character file line.

I've been reading some of Rocket's, the main developer, posts on the DayZ forums and some of what he's saying is kind of weird.

On one hand he's talking about how he'll never do anything to dissuade pking but he's already put in the bandit system which is probably the worst form of checking whether people are aggressive that could be done.
Then he talks about how he'll never change things to be appealing or mainstream and then talks about how he wants to include a levelling system.

I hope this doesn't become another mod that gets destroyed by the developers completely ignoring reasonable ideas to push their own desires and the requests of a tiny cross section of the community

Also, no ACRE I think Alctel. There's no real radio communication anyway(I think you need to find a radio and it sounds rare

He also said he wanted to remove the bandit thing.

The spawning thing is apparently dependent on server load, and needs a server restart every six hours or so.

What's really weird is that zombies and items stop spawning, but black body bags and backpacks are in abundance.

Yeah, no.

Here is a tip for everyone not used to ArmA: only ever use semi-auto. The only exception to this is firing at players at sub-25m ranges, and even then you're probably better off clicking multiple times in semi-auto mode.

This is doubly the case in DayZ where ammo conservation matters even more than regular ArmA.

Full Auto. Range 1 meter. Fire for effect.

I'm wondering what caliber the winchester shotgun is as well, because I don't think it's 12ga, seems more to be 20ga or so, which would explain why you can't swap ammo with the other shotguns which are 12ga.

It's still not a shotgun. 1866 is a lever action rifle. The earliest (and only I think) lever action shotgun made by winchester is the 1887, a gun with a magazine that stores a grand total of 5 rounds.

I've tried a ton of different settings combinations but even with post-processing off it still does it.

It's a weird thing that comes off of antialiasing of all things. The lower you set it the more of the bloom goes away. At 'normal' you can even see the sun and things becomes much less blurry.
