We have a thread in GBS for horrible ones, and that's great and all, but there are actually some really cool projects that (might) not take the money and run. Here's a few I have contributed to

Ogre Designer's Edition: Most anyone who has played board or card games has heard of Steve Jackson. Munchkin? Zombie Dice? Illuminati? This guy and his company. Ogre was his first game in 1977 and they're reissuing it. It's always sounded great but I've never been able to get ahold of a copy. He's awesome and updates and has seen out a couple in the last week with surveys, such as a survey about which card layout the donors prefer. I'd be surprised if he steals the money because it's a well-known company.

Pebble: E-Paper Watch for iPhone and Android: It's an e-ink watch with Bluetooth that pulls data from an Android or iPhone device. You load apps onto the thing via an installed app on the device (the SDK is available already) and apparently any data an Android app can reference, this can as well. It's water resistant, has a backlight, and has a 3 axis accelerometer as well as 4 buttons, so I'm looking forward to banging out some music controlling app where I can wave my arm around and change what's playing. The only things missing is a touchscreen and (full color) video playback, but this will be a great little toy. The company producing it already produces a higher-end version so I probably won't lose my money here.

My favourite was the Kickstarter for the Pratchett-approved Discworld short film Troll Bridge.

They nearly doubled the amount they needed so it's definitely happening. :woop: There's production updates on their Kickstarter page.

They're 7,225% funded. :psyduck:
I'm unfamiliar with the way these things work, do they often exceed their funding goal by such hilariously high margins?

Also I started a kickstarter so we can buy a new icon for this thread:

Not always, but there are very notable examples of this happening recently. The Wikipedia entry has a chart on projects that finished and went far over the original amount.

Didn't SA have their own inhouse fundraiser at some point? Back when Katrina took down the SA servers?
Edit: yep.

Also the wonderful Donate to Japan, Permaban a Shithead GBS thread that raised over $70,0000 for charity. I guess getting a guy permabanned counts as a Kick(out)starter. :v:

And for the sake of completeness, [Holiday Charity] SA Adopts a Tiny Village in Haiti: $79K+ raised!! They sent pics!!

They're not really kickstarter projects per se but they're great examples of cloud funding.

I helped fund this about a month ago. It's a project to build an underground park in NYC:

It look like they made $155,186 out of their $100,000 goal, so it's definitely going to get built! :toot:

Yes, it's for a mini version showing what they want to do and how they want to do it. It's going to require far, far more funding than this to actually do. Plus I don't think they want to take money until the city finally says "yes go do this thing," because who knows how far off that is.

The big downside, though, is that it won't use MicroUSB. Something about the waterproofing making it need some kind of proprietary connector...shame...

I'll probably still buy one...I'm tempted to "donate" but I really want it to be released and see reviews first...also, to see what the "user voted" color will be...though I can't imagine I won't get black.

Having vaguely Tron-ish colors and a nudge-nudge title like The Grid is brushing pretty close to the edges of copyright as-is, an infamously litigious company like Disney would probably jump at the chance to sue someone for making unauthorized Tron merchandise if they did that.

I didn't mean explicitly copy the film characters as Waffleman_ suggested, but rather just taking the classic card portraits and modifying their clothing to look like that of Tron programs, replace the swords and axes held by the kings with identity discs, etc. I mean, just look at what they did with the joker cards, those are sort of what I was talking about.

I'm pretty sure that would still fall under "fair use," just like the dozens of other merch sites, like teefury.com, which constantly sell things with designs inspired by copyrighted media.

So they basically want to be Jones Soda, but with beer? I don't know why this is even on Kickstarter. This is something that seems that it would be better funded by actual investors who can ask them questions about their business model and actually expect some returns from them.

gently caress everyone who dissed this in the GBS thread. This would've been so useful back when I was doing microscopy poster projects in college, and it's going to be awesome for researchers and teachers. Microscope-specific cameras and specialized mounts are expensive as hell and most of the ones out there are clunky ~1 megapixel deals unless you're prepared to blow more grant money than you should to get something decent (try $800 for 3 megapixels- and you have to plug it into your computer and run proprietary software). The iPhone 4S has an 8 megapixel camera- by that logic, this adapter should help people get Nature cover-worthy shots for a fraction of the cost.

The creator of Shadowrun has nabbed the Shadowrun video game IP and is making a Shadowrun game to do the franchise proud (read: Not another XBox Shadowrun). The goal is to bring everything fans love about the game back into the style of the old Genesis and SNES game.

There's no words to describe how happy this makes me. :3:

The Last of McGuinness

A little backstory on this one: Nigel McGuinness was an indy pro wrestler who was extremely successful and well-liked. Particularily in Ring of Honor Wrestling where he held their world title. Over the course of the last few years he wrestled less and less and eventually quietly retired and now commentates Ring of Honor's TV show. He promised that he would tell the story of why he left the ring via a documentary. This got funded in record time.

Idle Thumbs Video Game Podcast

I'm really picky when it comes to podcasts especially gaming related ones. Most are either relentlessly nerdy, fanatical or try too hard to "change reviewing" I find. Idle Thumbs, on the other hand, felt really genuine like it was a bunch of guys getting together and talking honestly about the games they played that week. It was a refreshing change to hear someone say "I'm getting a little tired of bros-in-space" when talking about Killzone 2 with complete honestly and not a kind of smugness. I was legitimately bummed out when I found out they ceased production.

Anyways, I came across a Kickstarter to bring it back when I was checking out the site for the first time. Within 5 seconds I had my credit card out trying to find out how I could donate.
