This game has hard-locked on me three times in multiplayer which is about the same amount of locks I've had with the rest of my games combined. Pretty loving annoying.

I like the game but that's probably half the attempts I've made to spend some time in multiplayer - and for it to happen half the time after I spent five minutes in a lobby waiting for the previous gang wars to end, I really can't be bothered. Probably gonna beat the single-player today or tomorrow and trade it in for Dragon's Dogma.

Thanks for the opinion on the gameplay you haven't played yet! Hope you enjoy getting spawn killed too. It's not as easy as you think. You're going to love the silenced mini-30 guys hanging out across a map on an objective mode too.

Yeah, now that I'm out of the rookie playlists, the fun I'm having is being balanced out by:

a)Guys with heavily modded golden Mini-30s hanging out at the back of the map sniping everyone. I just finished a TDM round on that level above the nightclub where the entire other team was camping with Mini-30s on that platform near the helipad, covering every possible approach. It was infuriating.

b)Guys who are 10+ levels about the next highest ranked person in the match, and straight up slaughter everyone just by virtue of having better gear. When the gently caress are devs going to figure out how stupid that is to give the people with the most played time straight up advantages in addition to having more practice with the maps and game mechanics.

If the multiplayer is really max payne style then you should be able to shoot dodge out there and shoot every one of them in the head before you hit the ground.

Also, have there been any impressions of the PC version anywhere? Game's a week away and I'm still worried it will run like rear end.

Yeah, I'd like to know the answer to this as well. Ive heard people speculate that the delay was due to them wanting to avoid Diablo on PC, but seeing as this is R*, it could also be down to the PC version running terribly.

Here's some delicious injustice. Nearly every dev that I played against yesterday in the Rockstar event used a silenced mini-30 and camped on a roof. Make of that what you will.

Otherwise just play with your crew and charge around screaming in your worst accent "Don't gently caress with Jersey!!". You'll still find a way to have fun. Also screaming "Yooooouuuu!" like a gangsta spooky ghost provides endless entertainment.

Edit: By the way, Lords and Ladies is ranked number 27 in the world but there is only one non-Gaming site crew that is ahead of us. We are loving wrecking Max Payne multiplayer and despise the Mini-30.

I would argue that no game has ever done such a good job of showing just how bitter and miserable the passing of time is on a human being who has suffered great loss. It's dark, heavy poo poo with no easy answers; but it also plays within the framework of a top-notch AAA title actually worth the money.

I would be so, so happy if well-written, exceptionally playable narratives like this ended up as the future of games, instead of the press making GBS threads itself over every $15 downloadable title it can read too much into. The only game on the horizon that I can even imagine doing something close to Max 3 (albeit in an entirely different way) is The Last of Us.

I was talking about Max Payne 3 with a friend yesterday, and I think that's a pretty good point to make: Max is both a complete film noir caricature and a relatively realistic character at the same time.

The comparison I always want to make is Nathan Drake. My primary criticism of the Uncharted series has always been that Drake is this eternal happy-go-lucky schmuck who's killed hundreds of people with guns, grenades, or his bare hands; there's probably a picture of him on the inside front cover of the Uncharted universe's equivalent to Soldier of Fortune that says "If your latest gig means you have to fight this guy, quit the gig immediately." By rights, Nathan Drake should be a vaguely man-shaped pile of post-traumatic stress disorder, self-defense or not, but instead, he's a cheerful wise-rear end who's always looking for his next mystery to unravel. It makes him look like a sociopath, like he's completely unable to internalize the idea that actions sometimes have consequences.

(Lara Croft should probably be mentioned here, but her games always have at least as many random animals, monsters, and jumping puzzles as they do human antagonists, and she's not going for the same quasi-realistic/cinematic approach anyway. She's very deliberately a cartoon character.)

Max, on the other hand, has killed a couple of thousand people at this point but never comes off like he enjoyed it, or that he's ignoring it. He does it because he's trying to protect other people, or because there's someone behind these guys who he has to make pay for his crimes, but it still tears him up. His wife and kid dying's the primary trauma, but he just keeps heaping more and more on top of it and he's pretty much in a constant state of breaking.

The newer Lara Croft is a bit more down to Earth. They seem to be trying to humanize her and show just how hosed up her life can get. If they succeed is another matter altogether.

The first one is kind of bad but provides good setup for the second, which I honestly think is one of the best-written games of all time, in just about every aspect. Given how cheap they are these days you could do worse than to pick them up.

Just beat the game earlier today. Every time Max spoke in the game (instead of narrating) he sounded so drat familiar. I don't think McCaffrey ever did that voice in the first two games, he always used his deeper narrating voice. So through the whole game it was nagging at me. Then he starts dropping a lot of gently caress You's towards the end, when I remembered where I'd heard that voice before.

I played through in 3 days on medium difficulty. I loved the original back in the day, and this is one of those games that pushes into art territory.

The story was depressing enough to have me drinking while playing just to empathize with him.

MP didn't really do it for me. I guess my biggest gripe is some of the levels feeling insanely long with breadcrumbs of the expected emotional payoff, which I guess is a good thing. But it felt tedious towards the end.

In all fairness its at least mostly addressed in the third one that Nathan isn't really a normal person, and danger doesn't seem to affect him like it does other people. More in a way that makes him a terrifying psychopath than a hero. They didn't really go anywhere with it, but they at least showed that even his friends are kind of afraid of him.

I love this game so much. Max's voice actor is given so much more to work with as far as dialogue goes, and he does a fantastic job.

On that note I hate it when you kick a guys rear end in a game and then it cuts to a cutscene where you get your rear end kicked. Linear games tend to do this a lot, I think Max Payne 3 does it a few times. I mean cmon, I just beat that guy in an actual fight and you're gonna turn around and cutscene me? Serious disconnect from gameplay, I don't like it.

That type of thing is why I hated the Vlad bossfight. Anyone else plan on getting a Platinum/1000 out of this game? I've almost beaten New York Minute, almost beaten Old School mode (which really isn't that hard if your first playthrough was on free-aim Hard), and regularly have 2.00+ KD's on multiplayer games.
So, New York Minute hardcore. I heard it's essentially Medium difficulty but the "hardcore" element is essentially the fact that it's New York Minute but the entire game in one sitting with no chapter select. Who's up for some ball-breaking trophy hunting?

I don't understand the complaining about the Mini-30s, I'm just going to ignore any semblance of humility I might possess here and say that yes, my typical skill when it comes to multi shooters is above average and I typically start wrecking entire teams within a few hours of playing a new game, but dealing with them is exceptionally easy if you keep in mind that it's not skill, but the generic thinking pattern of the average CoD imbecile. Find a way to make yourself scarce in disadvantageous positions, maneuver around the maps and keep in mind how these people think. They will stay in the same spot. They will expect you to come from the same spot. They will only fixate on that one spot. They want to feed their numbers and not work, or maneuver, or actually put themselves in a position where good concise timing and execution is necessary. They're just good at putting their crosshair over your head and they're good at waiting in the same spot.
A half team of them all doing it at the same time is easily flushed out with a well timed grenade, activating a bullet-time burst in the killing field to quickly slip by works, as does the roll. The dodge-roll is indispensable.
Typically, the Hoboken map is the easiest to flush them out with since it's pathetically easy to clear out entire buildings of these camping idiots. Slip in from behind and keep in mind the verticality of the levels. Never stay on a single floor for too long, continue moving.

The most essential thing about the vast majority of multiplayer games is keep moving. Establish a circuit, think of it like racing around an F1 track, you've got your circuit that no one else can see, and 90% of gamers are not going to bother mapping it out. Incorporate horizontal and vertical movement in your circuit. Skirt around the hotspots in the maps but never go into them, you want to smash people from the sides. It's all about flanking. When it's 1 on 1, be intensely aggressive because most people will freak out and run around like a chicken with their head cut off trying to dodge your shots, either that are they'll just shoot at you with their dinky assault rifle or SMG, shot for shot, dual pistols will completely outlast any CoD monkey with an AK in a firefight. take advantage of the firing breaks with the Mini-30s and their long reload times.

And for God's sake, make constant and irritating use of bullet-time. It's not the slowdown of the other team's bullets or the inherent mechanical effects of bullet-time that effect your enemies the most, it's how disorienting it is for them to be suddenly tossed into bullet-time and have their cursor slow to a crawl. It's why it's almost pointless to activate it in the middle of the fight (unless it's soft-aim, but we don't do that of course).

I went on a rant. But basically the key thing for MP3's multiplayer when it comes to dealing with the generic multi-tards is simple. Figure out their mentality, and exploit it, they will never change.

Mini-30s. Dual pistols. Shotguns. Submachine guns. Aks. Rocket launchers. Trigger happy. Big dog. Grenade Launchers. Grenades. Sniper rifles. Dual pistols again. Extended mags. Silencers. Bullet time. Shootdodging.

As I don't like to upset people when I play games, I'm only going to use a single pistol and I'm going to bow before ever entering into combat.

EDIT: Also, I give anyone who takes out a vendetta on me a three day grace period within which they may study all the secret gun-kata techniques.
