======================================================================================================================== Behold, ladies and gentlemen, the long-awaited sequel to 2010's Game of the... well, alright, it was just a really fun game. Nonetheless, witness Sonic's next foray into the kart-racing genre with Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed! ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3JdskIKjiI This game will be coming out on all major platforms (360, PS3, PC, Vita, 3DS and Wii U; sadly, no Wii version this time around). As you can see by the trailer above the main gimmick is being able to transform your car mid-race into a soaring or seafaring vehicle, with controls adjusting as expected. ![]() The original game was a fun kart racer that borrowed many ideas from Mario Kart. It wasn't terribly original but it was nonetheless a solid and very fun game with plenty of fanservice to make the fanboys giggle with excitement. The biggest surprises were the inclusions of beloved fan favorites from the Dreamcast era of Sega games, such as B.D. Joe from Crazy Taxi and Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue. ![]() However, this game seeks to up the ante in regards to fanservice. In addition to including (almost) the entire roster from the first game, the game has already expanded with exciting new additions to the roster, such as Vyse from Skies of Arcadia and Sega Superstars veteran Gilius Thunderhead, more commonly known as the dwarf from Golden Axe. ![]() (Pictured above: a stage from PANZER MOTHERFUCKING DRAGOON.. You goddamn better believe it.) According to previews I've read, the game will feature terraforming stages, such as those seen in the likes of Motorstorm and Split/Second. The Panzer Dragoon stage in particular features a bridge that gets smashed and destroyed by a careless dragon, forcing you to take to the skies to continue the race. ![]() Returning players will see that the tracks are indeed MUCH bigger this time around which gives inspiring implications about the game's tremendous sense of speed. ![]() (Joe Musashi from Shinobi on a Golden Axe track? You goddamn better believe it.) As the game was just announced yesterday, many questions remain. What other Sega franchises will we see this time around? Will we see any platform-exclusive characters such as Banjo & Kazooie in the 360 version of the game (as what happened previously)? All that can be said is that things are certainly looking up for this game. I hope that it becomes Sega's version of Smash Bros., and turns into a celebration of all things Sega. I can't wait for this game to come out. It's currently expected to arrive Holiday 2012. Why Sonic drive a car?

I never played the first game and maybe this is a weird question, but was the playstyle closer to Mario Kart 64, or Diddy Kong Racing? My friends and I always have a hard time playing Diddy Kong Racing together because of skill disparity and its focus on the actual racing aspects, we'll play like 10+ tracks with the same finishing lineup on every one. Mario Kart 64 is always a big hit though because it's all about wacky poo poo happening with items and trolling each other with bananas.

It had "hovering" vehicles (some of which looked like airplanes) but you couldn't fly off into the air with them or anything. All races were entirely landlocked.

I really, honestly hope that Amy Rose is a character in this and her vehicle is her hovercar from Sonic R. The second I saw Sonic's car turn into a boat, that is literally all I could think of.

This game has Vyse?! Holy poo poo that's awesome. Here's hoping he gets a stage, too. One thing I'll keep hoping for is that fuckin' Toejam and Earl get an appearance, too.

It's pretty much the same car she had in the last game.

The didn't give Tails the Tornado? C'mon, what the hell, it's perfect. But seriously, I am inordinately excited about this game given how few Sega games I actually played. I'm hoping for an Ecco stage, if not as a character. A stage from that game with this amount of love and care would be breathtaking.

What I'm excited about is that the handling from the original is getting a complete overhaul and the lead designer is the same lead designer that did Project Gotham 4 and Blur (Also a lot of people who worked on Split/Second, Blur and the DIRT series are working on this). It really sounds like the ultimate arcade racer (Though they mentioned they are still figuring out the best Wheel configurations at the minute) The original game was very good for what it was, though it reeked of a game with it's small budget being stretched to the max. But Sega seems really confident in Sumo Digital this time and are giving them the position of this years Sonic game with the budget to match. So I'm really interested to see what they can do now the limiters have been pulled off, so to speak. Also, the final unlockable character being the most "Obscure and amazing piece of Sega Fanservice ever made". Considering last game got Opa-Opa from Fantasy Zone. I'm wondering how deep they went this time. Sex Vicar fucked around with this message at May 2, 2012 around 10:12 |

One thing I don't get, why did Beat swap out his sweet-rear end lowrider for a quadbike? Maybe C-rank vehicles are different from the higher-ranked ones.

I am looking forward to this game but I am hoping it doesn't become overly gimped like the previous game for the PC and Wii a few years ago. (Wii had graphical limitations and the PC had extra content like online mode taken out because.....) Another thing to hope for is more variety in levels. In the first game it seemed to just be 3 levels of 6-7 themes. Sonics sea side tropical tracks Billy Hatchers snow levels (all three!) Squared off monkey ball jungle courses House of the Deads haunted levels Jet Set Radios urban levels which which were just a bland urban stage. Eggmans robot base Sonics Casino levels and Samba De Amigos South American street courses. I know Mario Kart did have some courses that were the same theme but they at least had some gimmick or something to differentiate the tracks. Also wishing for more variety with the power-ups/items. Maybe I'm asking too much for this game but the sega fan boy in me wants this to be good! Ronnie fucked around with this message at May 2, 2012 around 12:03 |

I would like to believe that, based off of the merits of the PC version of Sonic Generations, we should have nothing to fear. Yeah, the bug with Online Time Attack was silly (if you had 100+ Steam friends, Generations would crash to desktop when trying to start online time attack), but they fixed that AFAIK. It was gorgeous and ran at 60 FPS (unlike the 360/PS3 versions) and was splendid. I think we've departed from the days where Sega doesn't "trust" the PC crowd.

Ronnie posted:I am looking forward to this game but I am hoping it doesn't become overly gimped like the previous game for the PC and Wii a few years ago. (Wii had graphical limitations and the PC had extra content like online mode taken out because.....) One of the big things mentioned in IGN's video is that there's no 'reused' tracks in this game. Every single one of them is going to be unique, and there's going to be tracks from a far wider variety of games than last time as well. So I don't think we have to worry about it this time around, I'm pretty sure it was simply a budget limitation in the previous game that made them go that route. Though they are bringing back a few from the previous game, I imagine it's the more popular tracks, like that psychedelic Samba level, the Death Egg, probably one of the House of the Dead levels, and maybe the Billy Hatcher volcano? Those are just guesses on my part though. I doubt it'll be like, all 4 variants of Seaside Hill or something. But I agree on the items! I would love to see some pulled from various Sega titles too, there were a lot of weird generic things like boxing gloves and rainbows and whatnot that didn't tie into anything, and they could all be reflavored to be related to some game, I'm sure. Also there should totally be a Golden Axe potion bottle thing that hits other players with lightning when you use it.

Probably. That would be fine! I mostly just want to see some new items that are actually from stuff, other than the shield from Sonic and banana peels from monkey ball or whatever else there was. The last game just had no memorable or iconic items I can think of. Weird stuff like rainbows messing with your screen or exploding traffic cones, sure, but nothing that goes "Hey! This is a Sega crossover racing game!". That is what I'd like to see more of.

Lizard Wizard posted:Isn't this more likely to be Gilius' special item? There are no special items anymore, instead all-star moves are performed by collecting stars scattered around the track. Pick up enough of them and you'll be able to perform your all-star whenever you want. Seriously, read the previews, they talk about amazing stuff. With all the talent, imagination and money going into this, the game could very well become THE kart racer to beat. The new king of the genre. I hope the budget isn't too high for this... one of my favourite parts about the first one was that they clearly couldn't afford any voice acting so just re-used voice clips from other games. Which lead to hilarious stuff like Shadow death-screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" when he came in second place.

I don't think they've actually confirmed that all the racers from the original are returning, just that there's 27 racers in this one. Which means you could easily fit the 20 racers from the first in here plus the new guys, but I'm hoping they take the opportunity to trim a bit of the fat from the first one (Big, Billy Hatcher). And yeah, there's a rumor going around that Ristar and Vectorman are in. Dunno if it's true, but Ristar did make a cameo in the first one.

It's just a neat thing if you can recognize what they're doing. Reminds me of how Sonic Riders had some voice clips reused for like, Eggman. They used some of his SA2 voice clips, specifically ones from his multiplayer dialogue. Things like "DO YOU THINK YOU CAN BEAT ME?" I think. Of course that was also just a neat touch because the VA that voiced Eggman in SA2 had died, so...

Most of the races I had with goon buddies either had 1st or 1st and 2nd way out in front while everyone else duked it out for the pity points. edit: The game it plays most like is a much more accessible Outrun. You pretty much want to be constantly drifting, and looking for the right way to tackle corners so that you can actually start and finish your drifts on the straights, squeezing out extra levels of boost, is where a lot of the fun and replay value is. pokecapn fucked around with this message at May 2, 2012 around 19:51 |

Losing the All-Stars online really hit the balance since they evened out the pack a lot in single and local multi. It's really clear that the gameplay was planned around them from the start and losing them in the online somewhat hurt it (Especially since the large rocket that was supposedly the "Blue Shell" of the game was as useful as a chocolate teapot). Apparently there's a new "Blue Shell" style item that works like Banjo's All-Star in the first and drops items on the track in front of first place. Considering that was annoying as hell and still slowed you down but also avoidable, it's a pretty good compromise. Alongside All-Stars being available in online races, it will hopefully be balanced out a bit better this time. Sex Vicar fucked around with this message at May 2, 2012 around 20:44 |
