It's because of guys like this: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/06/m...ality.html?_r=1, and the fact that they can convince a significant portion of the population that they have the correct philosophy. That TL;DR philosophy is of course absolutely nothing new: The planet is only held up because the Atlases of the world work to make it so. You'd better have great rewards for the Atlases, because if they shrug, the world plummets into darkness! Oh my! Ultimately, it's a question of whether you believe that society is only as great as the greatest of us, or the least of us. I know for me, that I always felt that any group I was a part of, whether it was a debate team, an orchestra, or a jury, was only as strong as the weakest member.
