Norn look really awkward and disproportionate, like they have some sort of chromosomal abnormality. Their heads and hands are really small compared to the size of their torso and extremities, like a bunch of cosplay Vinnie Pazs running around. The fact that 99% of them are male warriors/guardians (and probably 12 years old) doesn't really help them out either.

Anyone got an AoE Thief build? Picking off rearguard enemies is fun and all, but sometimes they clump up too much and become really dangerous to engage.

Is there a place I could go to read about PvP? I do well in PvE, but when I fight against other enemy players, I just lose all intelligence. I did a few rounds in normal PvP and got my rear end handed to me. It didn't help that we lose 500-30 every single round. I'm pressing the buttons and trying to play intelligently, but I'm dying in 4 seconds every single time. I tried this with an Elementalist, Ranger, and Warrior. I guess you need to play PvP a lot differently than you do PvE, I just don't know how. I generally stray from PvP because I don't really like it at all, but I'd like to at least give it a shot this time.

The PvP browser matches where it's like 8v8 or whatever feels like a beefed up version of random arenas mixed in with the alliance battle format from GW1, i.e., teamwork rarely ever happens and people just run around doing their own thing. My best advice is to try and find a good mix of weapons that compliment one another and plug in traits accordingly that suit the kind of play style you want to achieve, e.g., as a warrior, maybe you want to focus on dealing stupids amounts of raw damage so you beef up your strength trait line with "+dmg" modifiers, high critical rate, and the like, or maybe you want to focus on party support and modify the traits for shouts, banners, etc. Also, be sure your armor and weapons are runed the gently caress up before doing sPvP. There are PvP lockers in the staging area (heart of the mists?) where you can soup up all your gear to match your character build. I absolutely adore mesmer in sPvP, as that's what I've spent most of this weekend doing, but I've noticed some things that bug me about the classes: specifically the four main classes I've been poking at: Mesmer, warrior, ranger, and thief. Mesmer is a lot of fun to play, phantasms are monstrously powerful (almost overpowered, I'd say), with excellent short-CD escape and mobility skills on the utility bar, but outside of phantasms you hit like a kitten. Most of my PvP strategy has been finding ways to lock people down to let my phantasms kill them. I've specced mostly for power and precision, so I have something like 3k weapon power and 47% crit, and all of the major phantasm boosts (haste, bleed, fury) from my traitlines, but it's still a bit baffling when my greatsword laser hits for maybe 750, my sword attack hits for maybe 520, and then my Duelist chain-crits for over 7k damage and puts 6k worth of bleeds on the target to boot. Plus clones and shatters are worthless now. And Illusionary Leap, Sword primary's gap closer, simply doesn't work at all. Warrior is basically a two-trick pony: Bull's Charge, Frenzy, Hundred Blades combo or the weapon-swap eviscerate, which already ate a pretty big nerf. Outside of those abilities you're pretty eminently useless due to lack of major control abilities barring shield charge on those two weapon sets and mediocre base damage. Plus, easily kited and locked down. It's fortunate that the BC-Frenzy-HB combo is so ridiculous and lets you 1-shot almost anyone every 40 seconds (except my Mesmer because I'll just blink to the catwalk above you and vomit phantasms on you). Ranger seems to have only one really viable build: The Quickening Greatsword + Axe/Horn. Built as a glass cannon with Signet of Beast Mastery to let signet actives affect you as well, you'll be monstrously tough, highly mobile and sticky, with okay built-in controls and boosts in your weapons, the great survivability and damage boosts of Signets of the Wild and Stone, and the absurdity of Quickening Zephyr both activated, on pet swap, and when you hit 25%. That said, it is one crazy build, as I think I've never lost a 1v1 while using it, and I have a good chance against 1v2s and 1v3s. Thief just seems to be a steaming pile of poo poo since they nerfed its damage since last BWE. Incredibly squishy, very low-threat, they seem to exist to be free kills for my mesmer, ranger or warrior. The only hard part is actually finishing them due to smoke screen and their downed shadowstep so I just let my Duelist do that. I seriously haven't seen a single thief not be useless in sPvP all weekend, and their PvE damage seems pretty poor as well. Do they just suck rear end or is there some sort of niche build a la my ranger build that you need to use in order to be useful? I wish I knew, because I find thief incredibly fun to play, but it's just so fragile in melee, its ranged attacks are so lovely, and monsters still love to go THIEF DETECTED, ERADICATING. I've been having some weird video card issues with a 560ti. Basically game plays fine until I go into certain parts of town (mainly multi-level areas) and then it turns into a slideshow. Changing from windowed to fullscreen or back again seems to fix it whenever it happens. Wondering if it's a memory leak and if changing the setting forces a reset but not my field so posted it on the bug report forum. Anyway, swapping that setting might be something worth trying for the people having issues with Nvidia cards.

I played ranger and Thief this weekend, and I think I enjoyed the thief more. I went with the power and movespeed signets and poisoned weapons, and the dagger whirlwind for my big skill. I kept the default armor runes, and put lifesteal and 5% damage on my weapons. I had varying levels of success until I went with 1h sword/dagger, and from then on I was feeling pretty unstoppable. I rarely died and I felt like I was making GBS threads out damage. I think out of the 30 or so games I played, I probably lost 5 or 6, and even when I did loose I was still at the top of the board for fame, usually getting anywhere from 150-200 on the scoreboard. Sword/Dagger felt really good all told. Your 2 attack is a blink strike, and you can press it again to shadowstep back to where you originally cast if from. If you are smart you can use it to disengage. Your 3 is a beefy evade strike where you hit them, evade behind them and hit them again for a big chunk of damage. Your 4 is a thrown dagger that slows, and your 5 puts a 90% vulnerability debuff on your opponent and then you go invisible. For my second weapon set I did dagger/pistol. I usually switched over to that when I was on an opponent with >40% Hp. Headshot for a stun to prevent healing, Point Blank Shot for a blind, and you have Heartseeker for big damage for low amounts of initiative. The downside for that set was that you really have no escapes outside of your shadowstep/heal. It's a good set for securing a kill quickly even with multiple people around though.

So, I thought I'd give a writeup on my thoughts on the guardian weapons so far. For reference, I'm currently running with sword/shield and hammer, the idea being that I have one set to use against ranged enemies and one to use against melee enemies, though I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the staff. Hammer: Important abilities include a line snare, a melee knockback, and the ability to draw a circle that enemies can't cross. A really solid set all around, though the only thing you have at range is the snare. Unlike a lot of sets, it doesn't really give you any extra survivability, and its aoe potential is merely okay. The most important thing to note is that you can combo offensively or defensively: You can snare someone at range, run up, and either drop the dome or knock them back into your team, or you can knock somebody back, snare them, and then drop the dome to prevent them from closing to melee range. It's probably a good idea to take judge's intervention if you haven't got a gap-closer on your alternate weapon. Greatsword: Unparalelled aoe ability. Just drop a symbol, stand on it, and use both of your long-range pbaoes and you can shred a whole mob. It also has a gap-closer that lets you get this combo set up, though it might be a decent idea to use the focus on your alternate set to shield yourself before going in. Staff: Weird as hell, but potentially very powerful. The ability to draw a line that enemies can't cross (which is also a combo field) is incredibly effective against melee enemies. It also has the only ground-targeted symbol, which might be valuable if you're traited out for that. The alleged healing move is almost completely ineffective, but the kit as a whole has good aoe potential. Martyr is weird and you'll probably never use it effectively. Sword: The rangefuckertm. Lets you jump on people's faces and block ranged attacks while making a ranged attack. Mace: Extremely defense-oriented, combine with the focus for the maximum amount of survivability. Scepter: it attacks at range and it has a snare, which is pretty much all you need to know about it. I was thinking of using it as part of my anti-melee set, but there's not much to pair it with for that purpose. Shield: Instead of having one good ability and one useless ability like every other off-hand item, the shield merely has two okay abilities. The cone aoe is decent, and probably nice if you manage to catch allies in it, but nothing to write home about. The shield bubble is pretty problematic. The knockback effect is extremely small, and while it blocks all projectiles, you're also immobilized for the duration of the effect. This thing is probably much better when you have a group. Focus: Pretty cool. The numbers on the laser are small enough that I never really noticed them, though the blind is nice except for the long cooldown. More importantly, the focus can give you a shield that blocks the next three attacks, making it far and away the best defensive option. Torch: The torch is bad. It has a line aoe which is okay, and then you can set yourself on fire/throw fire for damage that you will never even see on their healthbar though some guardian builds synergize with burn so there's that. Okay, I lied, the damage on the line aoe is decent, but the torch just doesn't provide anywhere near the utility of the other off-hand items. With the latest optimization WvW really comes into its own when your fps isn't in single digits (mostly). Actually organizing raids and defense feels very fluid, and there's constant communication. Building a bunch of Trebuchets on a high bridge to rain death on the castle below is an awesome sight, as well as building Arrow Carts and seeing many numbers pop up signifying your enemies' swift death. However, I've been playing WvW for hours on end and not picked up ONE Badge of Honor no matter what I do. Nothing of note drops from players or Keep Lords. Is this a bug or am I monumentally stupid? Here are a few impressions I got from this time around. Most perspectives relate to WvW. As much as I WANT to like Dagger/Dagger Elementalist, PBAOE just isn't strong enough. I had visions of DAOC-style PBAOE bomb groups decimating zergs in high risk attacks, but staff just straight up outperforms it for AOE, and does so at range. Yes, Ride the Lightning (aka Elementalist travel form) is amazing -- but you can main hand a Scepter and do so much better. Necros seem consistently solid, but then I don't use pets. I noticed there was a trait that turns wells into ranged GTAOE instead of being PBAOE and fell in love with the class again. Mesmers. I'm very disappointed here. Illusions and Confusion getting nerfed into the ground have made Scepters worthless. Yes, Phantasms got buffed, but it's not enough to warrant an entire weapon rendered useless. I enjoyed the manipulative nature of GW1's mesmers, and they seem to be steering the class away from that and into a dumbfire pet and mediocre buffing class. Also, it's late in the game to ask, but somehow I removed myself from the Goon guild on Sea of Sorrows. If anyone could re-invite Boho.2698 I'd appreciate it.

If anyone's interested in playing ranger, or at least wants to copy a working build and try their hand in PvP, here's what I've been using.![]() Shortbow or Greatsword mainhand Axe+Warhorn Offhand You can swap the middle Nature Magic trait for the GS damage buff if you want. People have already been over the GS rotation, so I'll skip that. Personally, I like the condition (SB+Axe/WH) build better, so I'll cover that. You should have a full Nightmare set of runes, and either 2x Earth sigils or an Earth and Chill sigil in the Axe/WH. I have an earth in the SB. Get the +Condition damage/crit trinket. The general play-style is to float around in the range outside of melee range but still within axe range. You should be rolling whenever you can to remove conditions, and making use of the QZ/Tail Wind/Call of the Wild/Zephyr's Speed buffs to GTFO the instant the fight is no longer in your favor. Basically just run around and cap, only fighting when you see something opportunistic. (PS This is how you play Thief too). Combat should start with the flock of seagulls skill on your Warhorn, followed by Call of the Wild for buffs. After that, continue to close the distance and use 3, then 2 when you are on top of the person. The most preferable thing to do now is to roll past them, swapping to SB and dazing them with 5, then snaring with 4 and continuing to DPS until you can go back into Axe/WH and reapply the bleeds from splitblade. Remove snares via rolling as soon as you see them, since the only way you'll get caught (aside from immobilize) is having a snare covered by other conditions. QZ is really good when used with the auto-attack on the SB. I use the Lynx and Jungle Stalker for pets. Because of the cooldown reduction on Sharpened Edges, you can actually apply the bleeds twice in a row during the period when it's still active but off cooldown. This is especially easy at the start of the match, so try to time it.
