Anybody have any luck getting razor and the client to run on Mac using parallel or bootcamp or something? I'm really not that tech savvy and a couple of my old buddies want to start playing on this shard (we all used to play back when we were like 13). This has turned really quickly from an incredible shard to a terrible one. The ruleset keeps moving further and further away from classic UO, and the GMs are pretty much hand-feeding the trammel mindset now to make sure people don't get their feelings hurt. Today's patch brought in the change that items can't be banked for 30 seconds after stealing them, adding a layer of insurance for clumsy assholes to reclaim their poo poo and effectively making everything but dungeon and dexxer thieves impossible to play.

Server population has been rapidly declining because of poo poo like this, and long downtimes due to the administrators not having a proper restart script set up that pings the server with a login packet to check if it's hung or not, it only auto-restarts when it hard crashes.

Me and the 3 other people in my group of thieves are leaving after this change. There's seldom fun to be had anymore as it is because towns are frequently dead and have nothing but naked AFKers in them with the rapidly declining population, but this was the last straw.

This shard had a lot of potential and gave me some of the most fun times I've had playing UO in the last decade. I'm really sorry to see it go this way.

Even if you think stealing is bullshit and you don't care, you'll also notice they put in permanent murderer statloss today and the inability for some reds to attack innocents. This server is poo poo.

Don't play it.

I disagree with pretty much everything you posted and I think most people who like old school UO would too. The staff fixed a bug that allowed you to instantly bank an item after stealing it and they reduced red penalties so reds could play more without macroing off an already barely existing temporary stat loss. Lets not forget that most reds went blue via a free reprieve as soon as militia was fixed and militia is thriving every single night.

If your group of 4 thieves is quitting because you have to survive 30 seconds before banking an item then I don't think you'll be missed on this server or really any server to be honest. I mean, do you actually enjoying stealing 35 mandrake root, banking it, getting killed, and then waiting 2 minutes to get rezzed only to repeat the exact same scenario again and again ad infinitum? Thieves are still 100% viable in every way except if you are a rez robe thief who gets killed instantly at the bank for items of basically no value.

I don't know the actual population but it's a smaller map and you pretty much run into people wherever you go. I can find oranges whenever I log on and the server is updated frequently by a staff that cares about the game. Whether or not this server is worth playing really depends on what you want out of UO.

Rottenapple

It's pretty rude to keep posting really inaccurate assessments of the server because you are butt-hurt that thieves aren't great. The game mechanics are tweaked every couple of weeks in response to player feedback. Nothing has really fundamentally changed.

I play anywhere from 2 to 4 nights of the week and have never not found action on my militia character or my blue farmer. I don't care about online client counts because they are a pointless way to judge a server where the vast majority of the players do not keep accounts logged on 24/7 and instead log on casually. There is more action on Rel Por than IPY had at 800 clients online and this is currently the only server with a rule set worth playing at the moment.

As for the goon guild, well, the red/militia group they had wasn't very competitive and it didn't seem like the guild itself had the necessary strong leadership to keep a group of randoms like that playing. UO, especially 2012 player-run UO, is too hardcore and too competitive for most people. That's ok. This game never has and never will be for everyone. People end up quitting instead of adapting because it's not like the glory days they remember. It's the same story for most mass-recruiting guilds on free servers.

If this shard has no macroers, then 100 is quite a bit for this style and era of UO, since most people online is roaming around somewhere up to something.

If you have a lot of macroers and 200 people that constitutes a dead shard from my experience.

It's perplexing that people have claimed that the murder system has become something more difficult for murderers.

The system hasn't had any change in the values or duration of consequences.

It is still 250 gold bounty per hour of consequence and 500 gold per hour to "bribe" away the consequence.

Now, instead of the consequence being statloss for the character (something that previously rendered the character unplayable in all facets) it is now simple inability to attack innocent players (and a pink hue with the title "the Shamed"). Additionally, if your balls are big enough or you don't want to bribe away the consequence or wait out the penalty, you can bypass it entirely by taking Outcast status which is similar to the statloss of old UO, with permanent skill loss (mind you, only is enforced by bounty hunters so it still isn't as severe).

Wrong. You don't need a high skill character to group up with your friends in Skype and run around ebolting newbies under that specific character name, which is the pretense for playing a murderer.

There aren't many reds on this server because most of the pvp takes place within the faction system. It's pretty easy to get up and running so I wouldn't really worry about getting pked all the time. If you need any advice about getting started, hop in the irc and ask around. There's usually some helpful people in there.

The collective staff on Rel Por has decided that it is time to close the book on Rel Por and focus our time and efforts into other endeavors. Unfortunately it is no longer justifiable or reasonable to have this much energy, effort and money drained into a project that we no do not enjoy doing.

We have decided to release all of our work and efforts to the Ultima Online community as a whole. Rel Por's code, systems, infrastructure, the map and graphics will all be made available shortly. We hope members of our small Ultima Online community may be able to salvage something useful from it for their future enjoyment.

Additionally, if the community wishes to properly organize themselves in such a way to financially and administratively support the shard we are open to "handing the keys over" and allowing this iteration of the world and community to persist.

I'd like to thank all of the time and effort of everyone that has ever contributed to this project. It wouldn't have been able to become what it was without their support.

So, roll credits and special thanks to the following individuals:
leisure
panbake
starfeesh
Char
Virindi
Rabbi
Luthius
mob of monsters

And the hundreds of players that played and invested their time into Rel Por. For better or worse, it wouldn't have existed or became the behemoth that it grew into. It began as a hobby of world building and coding between friends with aspirations of maybe some day supporting a couple dozen players. It comes to a close as a unique experience for many of us, with a lot of wonderful and interesting people met along the way.

Thanks again and our deepest apologies to those who felt it was cut too short.

Rel Por was great while it lasted. My group played hardcore from launch until the beginning of December when it really started taking a nose dive. At that point, there were only a few militia groups left and we were all tired of fighting the same guys with the same tactics over and over again. I really hope someone takes a look at mob of monster's code or at least scoops him up on another UO project. That guy created some insane systems unlike anything I've seen in UO before.
