What were they expecting? Minecraft doesn't even look like what it used to from what I've seen. Maybe I'm oversimplifying this but it looks like a game where you mine blocks, build stuff, and fight monsters when night comes.

A lot of the features were half assed and we ended up with a bunch of half finished stuff just because Notch would get bored of it. For example, the villages came out almost a year ago and Jeb has barely started giving the villagers a purpose this week. I'm really glad Jeb has been put in charge of the PC version of Minecraft.

Yeah, not to get too into it, but it felt to me like there came a point where they were just adding features to add features, but then getting bored with making sure those features worked, so instead of tweaking the base game and focusing on the stuff that I felt made Minecraft Minecraft, they'd start adding weird new features and then never finish implementing them. I mean, yeah, cool, XP points, that's great or whatever. But Minecraft never really needed leveling up or an endgame, it's a chill sandbox where you make cool things, but they seem intent on turning it into an epic RPG or something.

Well you can blame those on whiny fans demanding stuff like that. It all remains 100% optional though.

Enchanting needs a lot of work. I like the idea of using XP to enchant your gear, but it's asking a bit much to expect players to spend up to 50 levels of XP on an enchantment when what you think is the title/description of the enchantment is actually random words and phrases in galactic language. It'd be cool if you could at least figure out what the enchantment is if they're dead set against it actually telling you.

The "crouch so you won't fall off the ledge" tip is great, I'll be sure to take advantage of that.

I just started a new world using the seed "worstseedever". It spawns you right in front of a ground level dungeon with a chest. 30 seconds into the game, and I snagged a few iron ingots, some wheat, and a sweet pig saddle. There's also lots of caves with exposed iron and coal nearby.

Wait, it's just the language from Commander Keen right? I'm also kind of certain that it's possible to translate the language and know what you're getting.

Seriously, if they would just introduce animal husbandry and villages/strongholds, I'd be content.

It's become a pretty fun survival rpg on PC/Mac. Creative mode is the poo poo, but survival has def. come into its own. The game isn't really set as any one experience. Someone can go make a 1:1 Enterprise or a crazy awesome mansion and I can swear a bunch as I starve to death running away from other players trying to murder me with enchanted swords in the Nether. We're both having fun, who gives a poo poo?

You don't need to, but it does mean that if you find a particularly interesting world then you'd be able to share it with others; there's no way to see the random seed if you do not put anything in.

According to the Wiki the words that look like mystery-language descriptions of your enchantments are just randomly chosen words displayed in Standard Galactic Alphabet.

quote:

Enchantment names are randomly constructed from the following list of words. Three to five words are chosen from the list and appended to each other, then displayed in the Standard Galactic Alphabet. Note that the names have no meaning and are not saved on the enchanted item (meaning they will tell you nothing about what the resulting spell will be), and they are only displayed in the Enchantment Table interface.

The only way to sort of tell what you're going to get is by cross-referencing the amount of levels a spell costs and the item you're enchanting, and even then you'll only know as far as "here is a list of enchantments that it might be which is shorter than the list of total enchantments."

I stand corrected. I've never really made it far enough in a game of survival on Mac to build an enchanting table as I'm a sucker for hardcore mode.

Hey, man, I distinctly remember this being an episode of Spongebob.

Microsoft is issuing refunds on this game to SDTV users. No idea if they can actually tell whether you have an SDTV or not.

Not to encourage scamming, but after you get the refund (in the form if MS points), you still have a license to the game and can continue playing/redownload it in the future/etc.

Definitely worth looking into for those genuinely affected by the issue at least.

I'm still curious why that's locked out for SD users in the first place.

I forgot which one of you was El Diablo Bob O, maybe we're friends from SSX, but you showed up in my game tonight and I let you do you thing while I listened to some music and built my retarded monorail that circles the entire map. Finally I went back to give a guided tour of my underground strip mine, and he left, and he left a box of all sorts of goodies. What a gentleman!

So I joined his game to return the favor, and this guy has built something akin to Disneyland, with signage and a crazy uphill minecart track. I tried to do a little strip mining, but I got the distinct feeling I was marring the amusement park he'd built, so I left.

That would be me. I don't post much.
I was down for some mining, but it seemed you had something you were working on.

It's still a work in progress. I got the chair ideas from another goon, and I'm not sure what I'm planning for the area next to the North Observatory. Although, you seemed to miss the attic in the cabin and missed some of the details in the observatory itself. I managed to make a door that works when a certain switch is flipped. I'm actually pretty proud of that one.

As long as you're not digging up the things I've made, I have no problem with the mining help. All are welcome.

Not that I know of. Most games will let you play on an SD TV if you choose, but don't bother to make sure any of the text is actually legible. And it rarely is.

Unfortunately, for split screen it just shrinks the item management pallets to take up the same portion of 1/2 or 1/4 of the screen as if you were playing alone. It could have worked had they re-tooled the interface specifically for multiplayer.

The item management when playing 4-player split screen on a 50" plasma is hard enough because everything is so small, and Minecraft relies heavily on being able to differentiate between items with very similar icons - I could see why doing that on SD would be literally impossible.

Dead Rising's text was so small on SDTVs they had to patch it to make it readable.

There are a lot of cool seeds for crazy maps around, but does anyone know a good seed for a featureless world? Plenty of flat areas for building would be great since you can't just generate a flat map on the 360 version.

That's a very good attitude towards the game and probably how must people should approach it for their own cholesterol's sake. It isn't like Diablo 3 after all, and most of the ones mad about it probably only spend on it, so it's not as if it was an investment in something besides a fun sandbox with a few extra bits.

This right here is what a lot of the people who got upset need to remember.

I view survival as a way to build massive structures, just like creative. I just find it far more satisfying when you pull it off after gathering your own supplies and fending off starvation/monsters.

Look upon that Enterprise with pride, cause that poo poo was made with virtual blood/sweat and real tears.

Actually I think you're thinking of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. I don't think Dead Rising was ever patched for SDTVs, and it's still virtually unreadable.

it drops you into another area that connects to a second dungeon

and watch out if you try to dig up that area

the second dungeon's built on top of a giant vertical pit

Wee Bairns and I found a really cool thing regarding the map items; if two players swap maps they unlock each other's progress.
We've only used it by throwing our maps at each other so I don't know if this works for maps in chests too.
If this is a bug I hope they keep it as a feature because that's really rad.

Yeah, this is what I pretty much expected. There are many reasons as to why this version will never match up to the pc version. The obvious one is world size and how on earth(haha) villages, desert monuments, mineshafts and all the other biome types would conceivably be fitted into such a tiny map with any regularity. The other main reason is that, despite Mojang apparently brokering a never-before-offered multi-update deal with MS they are still constrained by the (undisclosed) limit and I will be AMAZED if the game is even close to the pc version by this Christmas. This is even disregarding the fact that the pc version is evolving constantly.

TL:DR is that this version is great for many reasons but will never even attempt to match the pc. (they may never admit this.)
