Are there requirements for what constitutes a house, like in Terarria? I dug out a cave and put in a door, bed, and crafting stations along with some candles. When I tried to sleep, a skeleton archer spawned in my house, which shocked me and lead to a series of events that wound up with half the mountain I built my cave into being blown up. When I rebuilt the front wall and some of the ceiling I used crafted wood bricks. Even though half my house is still has some dirt/stone wall, nothing else has spawned in there.

Your house had another entrance somewhere or was too dark in some spot. You need to either close off the bedroom with a door or keep every corner of the house well lit. Probably a good idea to light up the outside of the house as much as possible, too. Monsters don't spawn in the light and tend not to wander too close to it either. If you're like me, and dig your mine down straight out of your house, you probably want to door the shaft off from the main house.

The autosave is ONLY saving leaderboard stats. Not your world or anything in it. You MUST manually save your world before quitting and, ideally, every so often while playing.

I'm having a major problem with the Nether. I built my portal(s) and entered/exited them just fine 10+ times. Saved and quit, and came back, and can now no longer enter the nether at all. My entire xbox hard locks when I try, and I am forced to actually unplug the power cord to turn it off. This has been going on since day after launch, as I built my portal late that night and was unable to enter after waking up the next day.

I'm not the only one having the issue, as a quick search tells me, but most people can enter the nether fine and simply can never exit. There's also a probably-unrelated bug involving saving in the nether and loading the game above the bedrock ceiling.

I've tried every solution anyone has posted, even weird and off-the-wall type stuff. I deleted all the worlds except my main world, deleted and redownloaded the game, I deleted some random content to make space on my hard drive, I plugged in a chatpad (hey, someone claimed it worked), I tried in both online and offline mode, connected and disconnected, with and without other players, in splitscreen and out (with my main profile, a guest profile, and a friend's gold-enabled profile) and even on someone else's Xbox (but my hard drive). Crashes every time.

I'd chalk it up as a particularly annoying bug and ignore it until we get an update, except nobody else has ever had a problem entering the nether in my world, including people who have the crashing issue in their own world. I do seem to be able to enter and exit just fine in other peoples' worlds, but haven't tested in another of my own worlds yet because finding a source of obsidian and some diamonds is a bit time-consuming and I'd rather spend that time working on the structures I'm building in my main wold.

Anyone else having this problem, and/or found a potential workaround that I've not listed?

Maybe I should count myself lucky because I've read a lot of people having freezing issues with saving, and problems with worlds being deleted. Compared to that, this is pretty tame I guess.

Whats the deal with monster's spawning next to me while I'm sleeping. Everything around me is lit up. I don't know what to do.

In this version of the game, a bed is not safe unless it's two blocks away from a spot where a monster can spawn (any dark spot) AND in a place where monsters cannot wander into. If monsters are waking you up, either you have a spot somewhere in your house that is too dark and not blocked off entirely with walls and/or doors, you have a hole in your house somewhere, or your bed is against a single-tile thick wall. It's probably the last one, so either make sure all your walls are two tiles thick, or place your beds not touching any external walls.

Another solution is to build your bedroom above ground level, either in a second floor or a stilted/floating home. This way, you don't have to worry about the walls and can just make sure the room is lit and doored/walled off.

Does a dispenser duplicate the items you put in?

No (although a dispenser is used in the dupe glitch, if you are into that [don't do it, it will ruin the game]), a dispenser doesn't duplicate anything on its own.

For most items, a dispenser is pretty much useless except for show. It just shoots out items when it gets a charge. Most of the time, people are just as likely to open the dispenser to take out the items like a chest than to push a button to receive the item. It's mostly useful when combined with arrows, eggs, or snowballs as those items become a projectile that can damage or push back enemies or other players.

You can also use a series of dispensers as a sort of automatic preparation system; a hallway lined with dispensers and pressure plates that you walk through and come out on the other end with everything you need to go spelunking or with the essentials for recovering your lost stuff (armor, weapon, pickaxes, torches, etc).

Maps update themselves, so they will show your own structures, but each pixel on the map is an 8x8 space, so your stuff has to be bigger than that to appear, and obviously only surface stuff appears on it.

Dirt is one of the few materials I don't really have much of a use for. Keep some of it around in case you decide to make a hill somewhere or want to plant trees on/in something they otherwise wouldn't grow on/in, but most of it can probably be tossed into lava.

Gravel is interesting because, unlike most blocks, it is effected by gravity. Sand is like this, too, but sand has better uses (being turned into sandstone or glass). Gravel is fun to grief other players with. Drop two or three on their head and they'll suffocate before they can dig themselves out. If you're not that kind of a guy, you can also use the same method for monsters.

Gravel can also be placed and redug to farm for flint, which has a chance of dropping when you break it.

Redstone powder has a couple of neat uses, but won't really shine until the next update, with pistons. The best use for it currently is probably for powered rails and dispensers.

How does dying work? Can you only dye white wool or will dying, say grey wool green make a darker shade of green?
Can you dye coloured wool back to white?
I'm trying to make the floor of my house out of white wool but it takes forever to collect.

I messed around with this today, and you can't dye wool blocks directly, it's a crafting recipe requiring white wool. So you can't dye red wool green, for example, but you can dye it back to white, then green.

You can due sheep, too, by using the dye on it, and in that case you can dye a sheep red, then die it green, but the result is the same ad if you'd just dyed it green to begin with, no color mixing.

You CAN create certain mixed colors by combining dyes on the crafting table. Most primary colors have 2 or 3 shades.

Microsoft is issuing refunds on this game to SDTV users. No idea if they can actually tell whether you have an SDTV or not.

Not to encourage scamming, but after you get the refund (in the form if MS points), you still have a license to the game and can continue playing/redownload it in the future/etc.

Definitely worth looking into for those genuinely affected by the issue at least.

Has there been anything about custom texture packs? I really don't like the default textures.

Lag isn't bad at all. When playing online I've run into it a handful of times and it usually involves mined blocks reappearing for a second then disappearing again, rather than movement lag that would effect combat. It's always corrected itself with a restart, too, and then gone away for the rest of the session.

Texture packs are coming, and at least a few will be free. No ETA on that though.

I don't mind it taking so long except that the way they were hyping it suggested a much tighter update schedule. You can't really compare it to the "real" update schedule because these guys are porting existing content rather than implementing entirely new stuff.

Same concept for your stop, then. The powered rail won't start you moving if it's powered while you're on it, but it will stop you moving if it's unpowered. Make a one-block high hill, the minecart goes up the hill and the powered rail leads downward off of it. The cart will stop slanted on the rail until you press a nearby button, which will allow the cart to start moving again for ~5 seconds or so.

Quick MSPaint doodle:

Red = powered rail, black = normal rail. Put a button next to the powered rail so you can push it from the cart.

Yeah, it's against ToS to share accounts. They'd ban the account immediately if they noticed it, but how likely that would be would depend on how many people bought in to it. Two or three people, it'd probably go unnoticed for quite some time. Four or five would be a bit risky. Any more than that would be disastrous for all involved.

You would just download the tag on each box, yeah, you don't need to do anything fancy for that, everyone just needs the microsoft live account info.

Thats what the soul sand is for. For some reason they can get onto it but can't step off. It only has a 7/10 block hight or something. Thats why its good for thresh holds.

Another interesting thing about their height is that it can be used to create one-way doors.

Make an archway three blocks high and three wide (so that the opening is two high, one wide), then put a line of soul sand across the front of it. The result is that players and mobs can both go through the back side (without the sand) just fine, but will be unable to pass through the side with the sand.

And going further with this, because you can put rails on top of soul sand, if you put the soul sand barrier on both sides of the archway, and pass a railway through it, only minecarts and their occupants can pass through it, so you can have a railway going into a secure area/building with no risk of mobs getting in that way unless you have your minecarts exposed at the station and the mob wanders into the cart itself (easily avoided).

I'm pretty well familiar with gamesave sharing, so I can happily answer any questions you might have or even do most of the work in distributing the things, send me a message on XBL or ask on here. I'd love a copy of the world myself.

It is, technically, against ToS to share gamesaves but as far as I know nobody has ever been banned or suspended for it except in cases where it effects multiplayer progression stuff (a host of people got suspended for using someone's completed RDR multiplayer save, for example) and even then it tends to be up to the developers to do something about it.

The process involves ripping the file from a USB stick (or xbox HDD via transfer kit), changing the console/profile ID on it, and then resigning it and putting it onto a new USB/HDD. It's not daunting as it sounds and programs like modio or xstaf are actually fairly innocent except for what they allow you to do if you have the will (specifically, gamesave modding/cheating/editing and in some cases marketplace theft).

It would be the people who downloaded/used your copy that were taking the risk, not you (and hardly any risk there anyway), but if you were super paranoid I can help you clear out the console/profile ID before you upload it anywhere so that it couldn't be easily traced back to you anyway.
