INH5 posted:Well, I guess that makes a bit more sense. Though it still can't work as a "secret history," because we know that the only Saturn launch after Apollo 17 was Skylab, which obviously wasn't a secret moon mission. True, but I was willing to buy the implausibility of a secret lunar mission because the whole "found footage" style just went so perfectly with the bleak, claustrophobic setting of the Moon. No, it doesn't really explain anything going on on Earth. It does seem like the Soviet mission was a one-man job, though, so maybe they were waiting to announce it after it was sure to be a success.

Totally not true, but it's definitely my favorite conspiracy theory. Look up Lost Cosmonauts if you're interested in a flight of fancy, specifically the Judica-Cordiglia brothers.

There is a pretty good mockumentary about the Soviet moon landing in the 1930s - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_on_the_Moon. The scenes on the Moon in it are terrifying - they are not just usual found footage, it is 30s film camera effects that provide a very eerie effect.

Devour posted:2001 + Apollo 13 + Prometheus 2010: Odyssey Two is specifically the book where they land on Europa and get killed by some sort of plant monster from beneath the ice. I forget whether that happens in the movie. E: point being, "alien monsters from beneath the ice" isn't totally inconsistent with "hard science fiction", if Arthur C. Clarke is anyone to go by.

That's actually 2061: Odyssey Three. Odyssey Two ends with the warning from David Bowman to attempt no landings on Europa

Odyssey Two ends with the warning from David Bowman to attempt no landings on Europa In the 2010 novel, there's a subplot where China dispatches one of it's own ships to the Monolith, and their plan to beat the Leonov there is to do a maximum speed burn from Earth that leaves no fuel for a return trip. They land on Europa with the intention of refueling using the water there, but it's destroyed by some indigenous life form.
