I just ordered a Sapphire R9 390, for a lower price than any of the GTX 970 I could find. Currently using a GTX 660ti but after upgrading to a 1440p monitor it's really starting to feel old.

Mostly excited to play total warhammer when it comes out, but also a lot games that are more like a slideshow right now and with next gen seemingly so far away, please tell me I made the right/wrong decision.

So, I'm mincing between a 970 or a 390x. I game on a 1680 x 1050 monitor(s) so I don't need an overly powerful gpu but I want to get out from underneath my 760 which just doesn't cut it anymore. The only reason I'm hesitant is that I hated my last AMD cards driver support. Because statistically it appears that the 390x completely destroys the 970.

Help.

Edit: I want to add that it's been years since my last AMD card so if the driver support has gotten better, I'd believe it.

You should really compare the 970 to the 390, at a low resolution like that I would go for the 970 (and this is coming from someone who just ordered a 390)

And yes, the 390x destroys the 970.

Also worth considering is if you want a free the division game or a free hitman game.

Sorry but I'm not going to use google for you, I have no stake in AMD or NVIDIA just posting facts. If you want to compare cards performance wise you should compare the GTX 980 to the 390X.

I'm sorry I triggered that guy for re-using the word "destroy", I should have said "performs better than"

Which it should do, it's about $100 more expensive and it's not going to win any price/performance award.

On the subject of the GTX 970, is it still the best price:performance investment for current-gen if all I wanna do is play at max settings @ 1080 with minimal overclock finagling?

Pretty much neck and neck with the R9 390, if you move up to 1440p the 390 wins out. The AMD card also seems more future proof with better DX12 support and more ram.

Personally I would rate the R9 390 a 8/8 and the GTX 970 a 3.5/4.

Also worth considering is the game bundle, both camps include mediocre AAA games so that is like a $30-40 rebate.

Asus even has their own bundle with that far cry reskin so that's like $60-80.

My 560 Ti died recently. Well, it's not completely dead but it's pretty much on the way out. Lots of weird multicoloured artifacts all over the place. The tough part is that I'm between jobs right now so I'm screwed for replacing it with a decent sidegrade or upgrade for a while. I found my oooold 1Gb Zotac GT220 that I used to use as a temporary replacement but as you can imagine it's pretty much killed all possibility of reasonably playing any major game released after 2010.

I've been looking at these 750 Ti's on Amazon for £100 and I can't help but think they can't be that bad, right? I know they're not going to be ridiculous and likely won't provide much of a jump up from the 560 Ti but am I making a mistake aiming for one of those? It's solely influenced by my being broke and hunting for a job so I don't want to be hasty even though all I want to do is get back to space trucking in Elite Dangerous.

I've tried everything to fix the 560 short of baking it and I haven't tried that because I don't have any thermal paste handy.

If you're really strapped for cash I would go used honestly, people are often unloading their 2-3 year-old tech for very low prices and you would get much more bang for your buck than buying a new low end card.

Agreed that you don't save much if all you do is make cola and such, but RedBull/Monster/etc go for about $2/can. At $15 for a 60L refill, and $7 for a 9L syrup bottle, it works out to about $1/L, or 50c/16oz (Monster) or 25c/8oz (RedBull), so the savings are pretty significant.

You need to take a good hard look in your (oversized) mirror before buying a 9L syrup bottle. Can we please go back to talking about GPUs?

I agree brand loyalty is stupid, but monopoly is only beneficial for nvidia and if you look at how the GTX 970 and R9 390 are price/performance wise (that is, very much on par with arguably the AMD card being the better deal) and the real world sales numbers probably being 5 to 1 for the nvidia card it's a drat shame that nvidia has such a firm grip on consumers.

Isn't the 970 vastly more power efficient than the 390? All things being equal why buy the card that uses 100W more power to do the same job?

With newer dx12 titles the 390 holds a comfortable lead, and the gap only seems to get bigger, power efficiency is a thing but considering the life expentancy of GPUs and the typical usage of most people, unless you game for 8 hours a day I don't really see the issue.
