edit: Also, is there a reason SE seems to not like releasing things on PC? Like come on dudes, I didn't buy a decent PC so that I could also have to buy every drat console that comes out to play your games. Is the PC market in Japan non-existent or something?

Yeah, more or less. When I went there, the only PC games I saw on sale was porn games, a few copies of Fate/Stay night (which I guess counts as porn the same way slipping a couple seconds of sex into the LotR movies would count as porn) and oddly enough a copy of Diablo. Granted I wasn't actively looking for PC games but most of the people I talked to either just played console games or said they went to arcades.

EDIT: Oh goddamnit that post wasn't there when I was typing this.

I liked Cyan once I figured out the psycho Cyan glitch, it's probably the only way to make him useful. Of course you couldn't do jack poo poo until everything on the screen was dead, and he was only using physical attacks so it took a bit but it was fun to watch the game play itself for a bit. Took a bit of work to set up, and really it was only good for using against poo poo you were too lazy to kill by hitting buttons.

Not a spoiler; FF7 has the most daring narrative construction in video games and would give most books a run for their money.

It really makes me wish it had a good translation, some of what's going on went right over my head until I saw what it was like in the original. It's like FFXIII in that way, only the story actually was interesting enough that I went through that extra effort.

What's wrong with 2 and 3? I played a bit of the 3 remake on the DS and it seemed good. Then my DS died but that's of course unrelated.

They "rebalanced" it by making it hard as poo poo, essentially. The bosses had a shitton of health and IIRC a lot of the classes were weaker than the NES version. I'm a bit of a gaming masochist so I soldiered through until I got to the last level and then said gently caress it when the final boss one shot my entire party, and I realized that the last save was outside the final dungeon. Hours ago. It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't hyperbole there, it literally was hours of content I would have to redo.

FFII was just flat out broken, with a attribute system kind of like pre-Skyrim Elder scrolls games. Increase health by being hit, increase dodge by dodging hits, increase strength by hitting poo poo etc. However, in reality it didn't work like that, since if you weren't grinding the gently caress out of it you're characters wouldn't be good at jack poo poo, and counterintuitive things like the best way to increase health was to equip 2 shields and attack yourself.

Someone else who played them more recently can probably think of more unkind things to say about them, I've barely scratched the surface. Which is too bad, because FFII had a fairly interesting story at least. But the only good thing about FFIII was that it was the prototype for thread-favorite FFV, which did everything FFIII did but better.

Who the hell am I kidding, the only reason I didn't buy XIII was because of a lack of money, I'll keep playing this poo poo to the end of time unless it becomes so mediocre it doesn't even have a trainwreck quality to entertain me.

EDIT:

Two words: TIME. TRAVEL. That way Square doesn't have to explain poo poo about why Sin in back, it's time travel paradoxes all the way down.

X-2 had some of the signs of what was to come, because in hindsight it's like XIII-3 but toned down and not completely batfuck insane. Changing clothes as a gameplay mechanic, with some of the outfits being kinda really skeevy comes to mind. I bet he had an editor or something to keep his creepier impulses in check, come FFXIII there's no such editor and then he proclaims the main character HIS WAIFU and it all goes downhill from there.

The fal'Cie, L'cie and cie'th stuff never bothered me that much because I read waaaaaaay too much lovely fantasy in high school, and compared to the apostrophe filled hell that is bad fantasy FFXIII was like a breath of fresh air. It was the of XIII's problems, though it did make me feel like I was playing a lovely fantasy novel.

Depends on they feel there is a viable reason to change the name. Sometimes it's to retain an edge of the "exotic", as how Tina, became Terra, for clearer pronunciation, Cefka to Kefka, or because the original name is too unusual, Mash to Sabin, say.

There's as many reasons as there are grains of sand. Localization and translation are tricky business - it's not just a simple method of transcribing what is being said, but the intent behind it, or the evocative feel of the meaning.

I never minded the Cie stuff. It's easy enough to grasp as made-up terms go.

Stuff like this is fascinating to me. I worked as a translator for a short time and I never realized the sheer amount of ways you could interpret a phrase was absolutely insane. And I didn't have to figure out how to translate idioms or try to translate a name so it keeps the same intent as it did in the original language. I would actually watch a documentary of a good localization team explaining why they made the choices they made, like for example how Nier is completely different in English and Japanese but still has the same general feel.

Maybe it'll be like in the pre-PS2 FF games, where there is a huge map but you only explore a chunk of it at a time and it doesn't open up until later? I have no idea since I'm phoneposting and don't want to watch videos until I get home.

Its best not to think too hard about the morality in FF7 because then you need to admit things like Hojo powering a cannon with the souls of the dead was a necessary thing because the party didn't have any other plan to get into the crater and when you think about it is the soul cannon any different from your materia?

It's extremely different, because Barret can't equip a gun that fires concentrated soul at things, which obviously will be fixed by the time of the remake.
