The monk class is the best class and this is the thread all about them.

Patch 1.0.4 is out! Patch notes here: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/6368188147#3

What are monks?

Monks are a melee class introduced in Diablo Hellfire I mean Diablo 3. They fight up close and in the fray, relying on their swift attacks and dodge to decimate enemies and survive. Their primary stat is Dexterity, which increases their damage, critical strike and dodge chance.

Monks fuel their best attacks with Spirit, a resource generated by using their signature spirit generator attacks. Monks blend heals, auras and other holy magics to support themselves and allies.

Monk do not like to use their weapons, so most of their attacks tend to leave their weapons stapped to their backs as they pummel targets with their fists and feet.

Why should you play one?
Do you like WINNING?
Are you a rude dude?
Do you want to kick Diablo in the titties with your foot?

Play a monk.

The monk story

"Monks of the Sahptev faith train their bodies and minds so that they may become the foremost holy warriors of the land of Ivgorod. Within the cloisters of the Patriarchs, the monks endure harsh trials both physical and spiritual, proving their devotion and attaining unmatched focus.

Daily ritualistic cleansings help monks purify their spirits and overcome the corruption that gnaws at the hearts of all men. In the pursuit of martial perfection, they also hone their legendary balance and clarity, skills that allow them to master both unarmed combat and a diverse array of weapons.

After a lifetime of preparation, anointed monks are permitted to leave their monasteries' halls to serve the decrees of the Patriarchs. The emblem on their foreheads marks them as survivors, achievers, and pillars of their society.

Monks embody the will of Ivgorod’s one thousand and one gods in every step and every strike."

quote:

NewcastleBrown explains dual wielding:

While the system seems complex at first glance it is actually really simple.
Dual-wielding averages the dps of your two weapons and adds 15%.
Two-Hand is just straight dps.
One-hand plus shield is just straight dps.

Applying that can take a tiny bit of math, but it is still simple:
If the weapons you're dual wielding have a DPS discrepancy greater than 15% you will do more damage with a shield than with using the second weapon.
If your two-hander DPS is 15% higher than the average of your one-handers you'll do more damage with the two-hander.

Also factor in that your shield can carry a large chunk of stats. Those can quickly bridge that 15% DPS gap going from dual-wield to sword/board.

The only real complexity comes from skills and is slightly different for skills with and without cooldowns. This part I'm still not 100% clear on, but I think you should mostly focus on just raising that DPS number until you really understand how different attack speeds and base damages interact with the various spells you use. As I understand it, a non-cooldown spell scales best on attack speed (which is the only thing limiting you from casting it again ASAP). Cooldowned spells also have faster cast animations with higher attack speed, but they do more damage per cast with higher base damage.

quote:

All defensive stats work against all damage

Armor = damage reduction, includes magic
Resistances cover all damage types, including physical

Strength = +armor
Intellect = +all resistances
Dexterity = +dodge chance, everything and anything can be dodged including spells

The exception is, of course, +poison resist only increases that specific resistance

Wei's solo farming gearing guide! posted:

I thought I'd make a short guide on how to gear up a monk for solo farming. I want to emphasise that this is a high dps build for overgearing and farming an earlier act efficiently, though it's a good Inferno/A1 starter as well. A heavy focus on crit seems to me like the most efficient way to increase our damage. This is for a cookie cutter build with only the mantra as a spirit spender. I'll first talk about stats, then do a slot-by-slot breakdown.

If you run your numbers through a DPS spreadsheet, you'll find that with a crit/crit heavy build, crit chance is by far the best DPS stat. For reference, at 39% crit chance and +387% crit damage, a point of crit chance is worth 35 DEX, a point of attack speed is worth 17 DEX, and a point of crit damage is 3.5 DEX. A point of average +damage is 2 DEX, and a point of weapon DPS is 1.8 DEX. This guide is to help you get high DPS numbers while maintaining good defensive stats.

There aren't many slots which can have crit chance on them, so you pretty much want crit chance wherever possible. Get the bulk of your defensive stats from slots which can't have crit. One thing I see some posters do is not pay enough attention to crit damage, but it's a very important stat which really isn't too hard to get. Attack speed is nice, but you really need just enough for full mantra uptime.

The other stats you'll want are obviously DEX, VIT and resists. At high levels of gear, life steal is a cheap stat which gives decent levels of sustain. Health globes are another great source of healing, but not viable against elites until you get to about 50k DPS. Pickup radius becomes a very important stat at this stage.

Unless you're very wealthy or lucky, you won't be able to get many items with 5 to 6 desirable mods on them. If you know how to gear efficiently for what gold you have, you can still get by with 3-4 good mods in their relevant slots. I'll do a slot-by-slot breakdown, starting with the big DPS slots first. Having only your single resist in these slots is very affordable, and good enough.

Weapon(s): This is where you need to get the bulk of your crit damage on. You should dual wield, because that's potentially +400% crit damage. If you plug your numbers into a DPS spreadsheet, you'll find that weapon DPS isn't really that big a deal (1 weapon DPS:1.8 DEX:0.5 crit dmg, at 39%/+387% crit). I'll demonstrate with a picture:

Despite the spear having 196 DEX and 74% crit damage over the fist, while being a whole 210 DPS lower, it gives me 3804 more damage. I normally still use the fist because it's good to have a mainhand with a higher damage range for Sweeping Winds/Cyclone. Pick up a good critdmg/socket offhand before more people realise that the big number isn't really where it's at. If you don't mind spreadsheets, put your numbers in and they'll be really useful for comparing weapons before you buy them. This is my crappy 626 DPS offhand:

Yes, I am sitting at 50k DPS with it. A 1000 DPS weapon with no stats wouldn't come close to it. I see a lot of advice for people stuck on progression to pick up a 'good weapon', but that might be the worst place to spend your money if you don't know what to look for. Those two weapons can be had for 2-5mil, less if you're willing to browse a little because they get underpriced frequently. A weapon with over 900DPS and other desirable mods starts at 10mil, and in many (market priced) cases will give you a lower DPS per gold invested than an armor upgrade.

Life steal is also good once you're past the 30k sheet DPS mark, and it only gets better from there. You can use LoH till then, but don't overpay for it (I just joined the 0 LoH club myself ). Jewelry is a much better slot for that. I haven't used a shield in forever, but if you insist on using one you'll want crit chance on it. The other important stat is block chance.

Crit damage (with a socket)> Lifesteal or DEX

Head: Probably the most annoying slot to shop for. Crit chance goes up to 6% on ilvl63 helms, 4.5% on ilvl62. You can get a socket on it, but I find it really drives up the price of the item. The prices on helms with less than 5% crit are noticeably lower. There are a few other useful mods you can get on helms. Skill modifiers are good, but extremely rare. Spirit regen and LpSS are nice too, but I find these unimportant.

Crit chance > DEX > socket > resists > VIT

Gloves: Most important DPS armor slot. If you can't get resists here, that's alright. Fortunately, this market is flooded because of crafting. Also a slot with high natural DEX rolls (200 single/300 double). If you're starting out, 150 DEX/8 crit chance/your resist can be had for pretty cheap.

Ilvl62 (crafted) gloves can't actually get higher than 32 crit damage, so I don't think it's that important here. For my character, 1 point of attack speed is worth about 5 crit damage, so that's a more worthwhile stat to go after. It's also good to note that crit/crit gloves are more expensive than ASI/crit chance gloves, because most people aren't spergy spreadsheet types.

Crit chance > ASI > DEX > Crit damage > resists/VIT

Bracers: Not too exciting, but you can get up to 6% crit on ilvl63 ones, and up to 4.5% on lower. Just as with helms, there's a big step up in prices when you go from 4.5 to 5% crit. There's also melee/ranged reduction, which can be nice.

Crit chance > DEX > resists > VIT > Damage reduction

Amulets and rings: Jewelry is stupidly expensive but can roll pretty much any stat. The prices for not-so-good stuff are crashing, so it's not too hard to get a DEX/crit thing for cheap. One way to itemize with jewelry is to use them as slots to make up for areas where you're lacking, but with how expensive they are what I usually do is to build my gear around them. There are some really nice (overpriced) legendaries. Ouroboros seems to be the only reasonably priced one. Blackthorne's Badge is alright, but doesn't naturally have crit chance. Skull Grasp is really nice, but expensive. I suggest spending the gold elsewhere if you're on a tight budget.

Crit chance should always be at the top of your list. I would get LoH here if you feel you need it, because your weapons should be dedicated to other cooler mods. Crit damage is great and comparatively cheaper (on jewelry) than ASI/crit chance, if you need more of that stat. Put crit chance and crit damage on the same item however, and you're looking at a huge price increase for not much benefit. +min/max damage is good (and usually ignored as a trash stat). The +24-48 or whatever on my amulet is equivalent to about 72 DEX in damage.

One thing to note is that rings don't have a very big stat budget and can only get 4.5% crit or 35% critdmg, and fairly low primary stat rolls. Attack speed is a good mod to look for, as the budget for that stat is not affected. Resists are good too, because the max on rings is only about 10 lower than in other slots.

Crit chance > whatever you're lacking

Shoulders and waist: Nothing special here, so get double resists and DEX. VIT and life% are nice, if you can afford those too. This is also a good slot to get pickup radius or +health from globes on. Please don't get String of Ears, you shouldn't be dying to melee damage.

DEX > resists > VIT/%life

Chest: This slot can roll more VIT (200/300) than usual, so look for it here if you're lacking. You can get damage reduction from melee/ranged/elites in this slot, which can be really nice. If you have the time to browse, look on the Auction House for chests with empty sockets on them. Chances are they're underpriced. This is because most buyers are lazy and search 150/150 dex/vit or whatever, so they end up missing the 80/120 with double resists and 3 empty sockets.

Legs: Same as chest, except that it can't have damage reduction mods. Empty socket thing and extra VIT applies too.

DEX == VIT > resists > Damage reduction

Feet: Some people don't mind not having movement speed, but I've gotten too attached to it. I need to chase those loving A3 runners down man. This slot can roll high DEX (200 single 300 double), so be sure to look for that.

Movespeed > DEX > resists > VIT

Hope this helps! The bolded priorities I gave are just a rough guideline for you to get the most bang for your buck, but you should obviously be gearing according to where your stats are lacking.

This. I've played a female monk to level 11 so far and I'm in love.

Teleport punching into groups of monsters, super scorpion kick or whatever the AoE is, pin-balling between the scattered remnants then destroying the poo poo out of an elite mob.

gently caress any other class. Monk is where it's at. The only issue I have with the class is that it's too loving fast for my mind to comprehend. My old man brain and fingers are left in a daze as I'm still preparing to kill a monster I killed 5 monsters ago. It is glorious.

Basically this:

e: vvv No idea. It doesn't have to be UFC though, if I can find the right skill for Monk it can be soccer or rugby style too.

No but you can make a really passive build like this:

Nice; anyone know off hand if damage returned is calculated based on incoming damage from the monster or based on the final amount you take? Basically, if you have a ton of damage reduction is it going to reduce the damage you reflect back as well?

I've wanted to play a Monk since the Blizzcon where the Monk was first revealed.

Then I played a Wizard in the beta and said "gently caress all these other classes, I'm going to be a goddamn Wizard."

Now my friend decided that he wants to play and is going to play a Wizard so I'm back to The Real Master Class, Monk.

It's based on the final amount. Damage reduction and dodge basically slow the fight down, because you'd do the same amount of damage eventually.

Thorns damage is simply based on getting hit.

I said come in!

There is no doubt that I will play a Monk tomorrow. My only decision is male Monk or female Monk. Do I want a manly beard that means business, or a slightly more attractive face/voice? At least, I heard the male Monk voice can be iffy at times.

So here is a question... what weapons to use?

I'm tempted to build something like a DAOC Friar using a staff just for the awesomeness retardedness of it.

Are there any pros/cons to weapon choice?

As far as I can tell the major difference is one of your passive skills which increases spirit generation by 25% if you're wielding a 2hander or dodge chance by 15% for dual wielding.

O, for a muse of fire

I know it used to be that any of the Monk's skills would combo into each other but I heard it was changed. Do they still combo with each other, just the secondary effects play on each hit, or do I gotta use the same attack three times in a row to do a combo?

They're not really combos in the traditional sense.

Every Spirit Generator attack has 3 stages, and switching between them doesn't reset the stage.

For example, Fists of Thunder has

Punch1
Punch2
Blast

and Deadly Reach has

LongPunch
Slam
Kick

So if you have both of these abilities equipped, you can use

Punch1
Slam
Blast

or any other variation like that. There isn't anything else that really combos together, outside of Jay Wilson's definition of "Well you can Exploding Palm someone and kill them for more explosions".

Monk was the only class I levelled to 13 after every beta patch wipe. gently caress yeah I am jonesing to punch the skellingtons out of things. A shame that the Bounding Light rune got moved all the way to a lvl 52 unlock. I really enjoyed that one. Guess it's just another thing to look forward to. Most looked forward to? After using 2 fast 1-handers I could never use a staff. Even if I was hitting harder it just felt like punching underwater. Monk is all about punching at the speed of light.
