There was a big thread in GBS a while back photoshopping the comic strip "For Better or For Worse." That smilie is taken from the last panel of this strip when the family's house burned down.

No idea why anyone felt the need to buy it though.

It's from For Better or For Worse, a comic strip discussed in the Comic Strip Megathread (originally the FBoFW thread before diversifying). One of the characters is an author. When his house is burning down, he realizes that his manuscript is still in the building, so he charges back in. One of the firefighters pulls that dumb face and says that line, and entered Comic Strip Megathread history.

This is from an old newspaper comics thread. There was a For Better Or For Worse plot in which the house burned down or something, and someone wanted to go back in to grab something, and there was that firefighter, with his thousand mile stare, admonishing us that Some Things Just Aren't Worth Dying For. It was popular enough a smilie was made!

Couple pages late, but I think that's the thread that spawned the :gooncamp: thing. It's from '06, so archives. The smiley pops up for the first time on the 12th page, and most of the thread is "ugh gently caress goons" so I can't say it's exactly worth reading in its entirety. Or maybe at all. There was something about a "brown oily substance" and a blow-up doll having its orifices tongued clean of ... chili? mousse? mud? I don't know. That thread made me queasy.

The sonia emote is related back to DPPH but I can't remember the specifics, it was before my time.

It was so long ago homegrown porn was still allowable. Of course, homegrown always leads to massive drama so it has since been banned.

The story goes (if memory serves me right...other old goons can feel free to correct me if I am wrong) one particular goon had a ludicrously hot girlfriend named Sonia. They took some pictures of her (and I think her and him together) and posted it all over DPPH. A massive drama bomb followed. The smiley, as far as I know and as far as the forums proper goes, are all that remains.

I have no idea where you would get any pictures or video that exist. They may have been lost to the sands of time but my understanding is that she was, in fact, unbelievably hot.

I wanna say a mod made that one, because I remember the thread that it was born in (pretty sure it was GBS). I think all the previous reg date emoticons came about organically in the actual year once the trends of those posters emerged, but someone ruined it by making a thread at the end of 2007 saying "hey guys '08 is coming up we'd better make an emoticon" and as usual goons took it too far. So all these different emoticons were cropping up. Then people couldn't agree on which one was the best so everyone was buying different ones in an attempt to beat everyone else, all of them under the same or really similar shortcuts. So while this clusterfuck was going down and everyone was internet yelling at each other whoever's in charge of emoticon business just took all of them down and threw that up instead.

Ah, the good old days. :allears:

If I remember correctly BYOB posters bought that emote as a prank on GBS since they spent ages arguing over what it should be. BYOB got so excited about their prank that they accidently bought 2 or 3 versions of :regd08: and another version of it that was just the word gently caress written in MSpaint. Some admin eventually deleted the others and made the current one the emote.

Stoke City Football Club is a team that, regardless of the quality of player they sign, always play the same type of football. Very defensive, very boring, very physical, and very dependent on throw ins/corner kicks/free kicks. They employ this method so well that they've gone from a newly promoted team to a mediocre mid-table side that has qualified for a European competition. When they execute said technique and pull off a victory from a dead ball situation, it truly is a :stoke:

To be :stoke:d is to possess the ball for prolonged periods of time, produce absolutely nothing, and then concede a goal to a bunch of cloggers. It is the epitome of being trolled in football.
