There is a lot of blame to go around for the ongoing pussification of kids. Mollycoddling parents. Indifferent teachers. Big Pharma. The Jews. But I reserve most of the blame for the kids themselfs. There comes a time in a young man/woman/otherkin's life when they need to cop a pair of balls, stand tall and resolve not to be treated this way. But Bully prefers a bitching, pouting, whining and moping path to self-actualization. It's another tiresome PSA celebrating non-confrontational, do-nothing "activism" where a lot of people wear bracelets and sport t-shirt slogans without doing sweet bippy. You'll experience a greater sense of spiritual renewal taking the Activia challenge than watching this lame-rear end after school special. Bully weaves several stories together, each amounting to a piss in the ocean. One kid gets bullied because he was born premature, wears glasses and has permanent duck lips. One is a bull-dyke in the Bible belt. Another is a black girl who brings a gun to school. There's also the parents of suicided kids, victims of bullying. They are all united under the banner of this specious anti-bullying movement, whereby if they share their stories and create awareness, somehow bullying will be cast into the Phantom Zone and we'll all live in harmony. Now I'm sure they mean well, but all the producers of Bully are doing is feeding into the delusion of these concerned parents and their all-star sons and daughters. Does anybody truly believe bullying is going away? And do they think it's limited to school? If these kids think the rankling of pubescent classmates is bad, just wait until they get their first job. The film also went out of its way to heap criticism on the public school system, particularly one deluded school principal who refers to her kids as "little cherubs" and goes out of her way to avoid assigning blame. But pinning the collective misery and loneliness of these kids of indifferent school hall monitors is a cop-out. You can't teach self-confidence, but you can sure as poo poo engender a lifelong persecution complex. Look, any pre-teens/tweens/teens who experience bullying should understand that it is a process known as growing pains. This is the time of life when you shed the placenta of childhood and become fully exposed to the harsh and unforgiving real world. Bullying can be instructive--it's like a wildfire that renews an old growth forest. It can teach you what you are and what you'd like to be. Most importantly, it can teach you to stand up for yourself. But Bully wants you to think of it as an epidemic, something to be cured, like cancer or fibromyalgia. Bully is choir-preaching, nourishment for the cult of victimhood, and a pat on the back for nanny-state busybodies. Sack the gently caress up, children--we've all got problems.
