The family bailed out on me for the revised family walk in the am. But we all get off kilter when routines change, so I'll just let them take a rest day today. I was very sore from kettlebell yesterday and did not want to walk. I lowered my intensity/speed a little and instead added distance. I think it was a good compromise (and a tip from a friend!). I walked 2.77 miles ( http://www.mapmyrun.com/workout/129834757 After I started walking, the soreness was gone, but was back as soon as I stopped. I need to learn how to stretch and need to work on kettlebell form. I'm out and about for the rest of the day, so I'm skipping lunch so I can have delicious drive-in food. Thanks for the stuff, Bacon! edit: and thank you, db for the arm/leg switch idea ThreeFish fucked around with this message at May 25, 2012 around 15:22 |

That kind of soreness is common when you take up a new kind of exercise. Walking through it was the right move.

I didn't get home until 3 or 4 this morning! Argh! Long day and my efforts took a beating. Not a bad beating at all, but a beating nonetheless. I was 200something calories over yesterday. I knew I would be eating badly, and I did. Guilt free. When my calories were gone, they were gone. I paid no attention to macros at all yesterday. I did eat a little more popcorn than I had hoped, but the results could have been MUCH worse. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/di...date=2012-05-25 I did my (biggest yet!) walk before leaving yesterday, and the only other cardio I could fit in was a 1 mile walk at a random Walmart parking lot in BFE Kentucky at 2am. My family went in to grab munchies, and I walked the lot. The cops even came. It was weird. Look at this route from using my app. It makes me smile! http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/96271963 Anyway, not a great PM walk, but I think the important thing is that I did it! PLUS my thoughtful family came out of Walmart with 2 dozen loving donuts. I hate Walmart donuts. But I definitely would have eaten one of those bad boys. But I was out of calories. Oh well. I did a horrible walk this morning. I was so tired from the late night. It felt like I had just walked a few hours ago (because I did!), it was already 81 degrees, I was sluggish from yesterday's bad food decisions etc etc ETC. http://www.mapmyrun.com/workout/130228049 TERRIBLE. I am going to kettlebell it up later and do a better walk tonight. I'm already back on track with food today. EDIT: My husband taught me how to stretch yesterday. He was in the Army for 22 years. I feel lots better. Still sore, though. Badly.

It's hot in Kentucky today, so we are taking our family walk after sundown today. I'm planning on doing a not-so-breakneck-pace but longer distance. Going to shoot for 3 miles. I hurt LESS when I walk, so I may as well take advantage of it. After my morning walk, I loaded up some kettlebell videos and practiced my form while doing my workout. Double hand swings: 15lbs x 20reps x 2times High windmills (left): 15 x 10 x 2 High windmills (right): 15 x 10 x 2 Low windmills (left) 15 x 10 x 2 Low windmills (right) 15 x 10 x 2 Alternating single hand: 15 x 20 x 2 Front squats: 15 x 20 x 2 I know. It's not very much. But I'm working it. I'm very unfit. I already improved from my last workout (I didn't wimp out of the windmills). Oh! And I'm not counting it as exercise or anything (I actually don't count ANY of my exercise against my calories anyway)but I've started doing 10 curls on each arm with my kettlebell every time I walk by it. Just to help me not suffer so much on the windmills. I need some advice. High protein apparently means constipation for me. I need fiber, I guess? Is there a supplement or pill I can use for that? I tried googling, but I'm not phrasing it very well or something. Are Metamucil or Benefiber all I really need? Also, my core strength is already much improved. My back doesn't hurt when I do dishes anymore. Things like that make me feel like I passed a little milestone. And I'm not getting leg cramps or back cramps every day. Yay!

Did my morning walk: http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/96701075 Did Kettlebell: Double hand swings: 15lbs x 20reps x 2times High windmills (left): 15 x 10 x 2 High windmills (right): 15 x 10 x 2 Low windmills (left) 15 x 10 x 2 Low windmills (right) 15 x 10 x 2 Alternating single hand: 15 x 20 x 2 Front squats: 15 x 20 x 2 Right on target for food/water etc! My weight isn't doing much (at 256.8 this morning) but I'm not terribly worried. I'm doing the work, I'm eating the food, I'm not cheating anywhere- so it'll come. My period comes in about a week. I really have no idea when you start retaining period bloat. But I'm really not beating myself up about it or anything. Have another walk tonight - after sundown. It's hot. Whew.

I have come to the realization that if I'm going to have to walk several miles a day for the rest of my life, I am going to have to move to a much cooler climate- and one without bugs. It turns out there is such a place. Colorado Springs! Who woulda thunk it. Total miles walked (since 5/18/12): 29.70 miles! I will never not be amazed at this. My walk tonight: http://www.mapmyrun.com/workout/130843529 Terrible time, but I am sweating buckets. I loving hate being hot! I so wanted to quit at 1 1/2 miles. But I pushed it! Food today: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/diary/threefishblue I'm on track for food. I always leave enough calories at night to have a massive pigout if I so feel the need. Sometimes I don't feel the need, so I don't force myself to eat them (I usually eat them). I even had chocolate cake today! http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/c...dding_cake.html It was really good. I've noticed my sodium is crazy. I can't afford to buy all new stuff right now, but I'll make sure to restock with the low-sodium version of what I can. I also took out my twice daily snack of 3 peperoncini They had little nutritional value and a boatload of sodium. This makes me very sad. I'm doing great! Double hand swings: 15lbs x 30reps x 2times High windmills (left): 15 x 10 x 2 High windmills (right): 15 x 10 x 2 Low windmills (left) 15 x 10 x 2 Low windmills (right) 15 x 10 x 2 Alternating single hand: 15 x 20 x 2 Front squats: 15 x 20 x 2 Added 10 more double hand swings each set. Feels good, man. As long as I remember to do a full body stretch every hour or so, I'm really not feeling badly. I feel great, and I'll do another walk tonight. I really feel that the heat is what's holding me back in getting my speed back up. It's supposed to get cooler and storm all week (oh joy!), so maybe I can get back to pushing myself harder on my walks. I don't like heat. Have I mentioned?

Don't worry about sweating a ton during walks just make sure you are hydrated before/after/during if possible. It's uncomfortable at first but you will get used to it after awhile and soon you'll be waiting to soak your shirt in sweat that's how you know you've been working out And much like fanpantstic said eat more veggies. Like 2 cups additional veggies w/ your main meal or something like that (veggies, no starch!) and see how that works out for you.

I do definitely need to cut out the diet soda. I need to be called out on it. But I went from drinking NO water 2 weeks ago to drinking ~80oz a day! I have cut my soda intake, believe it or not! Here's a reputable article about the ambiguity surrounding the notion diet soda is bad for you http://www.dukehealth.org/health_li...icles/diet_soda In my experience (and I used to be a huge Diet Coke person), drinking sweet drinks, even if they are sugar free, still maintains that part of your brain that craves sweet things. And I suspect that the correlation between diet soda and obesity isn't the soda itself but rather the tendency for people who drink diet sodas to either overdo refined sugars in general or trick themselves into thinking that drinking diet soda is a pass to overeat solid foods. In any case, I drink lots of water because it's the best thing to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather. Also, if I go for a little bit without eating refined sugar (and even artificial sweeteners), I find that I can detect sweetness with more subtlety, such as in fruit flavored and not really sweetened seltzer / sparkling water.

I had the same issue with soda, what I found helped was just get rid of all of it you have. Then to make up for the fact you want a carbonated beverage probably pick up some flavored water (like ICE, but there's cheaper stuff out there) and use that instead. I know the idea and some research shows that with diet soda you'll still crave sweet things but as long as you fix that craving with zero-calorie water who cares. Also try tea. Green tea in particular has some helpful stuff in it that does all sorts of random nice helpful things to the body. I think there's even a tiny bit of research that shows large amounts of green tea helps with weight loss (at least in mice!) I decided to limit my diet pepsi to one when I get up. I think that is the most attainable and definitely the most sustainable. Sustainability is one of my major focuses. As it probably should be! As for my smoking, the last time I (successfully) quit, I had to set a date about 2 months in the future as my quit date. Every cigarette before that quit date I talked to myself about why I was quitting. When the quit date rolled around, I was ready to quit. And did- for 3 months. Since that has been the ONLY successful method for me despite trying a hundred different ways, I think I have to do it that way again. So my quit date is July 31. I just put it in my phone, too. I feel so stupid for not being able to tackle these 2 seemingly simple tasks without a whole bunch of stupid excuses. Ridiculous. Morningwalk: http://www.mapmyrun.com/workout/132387933 Kettlebell: Double hand swings: 15lbs x 60reps, 15 x 45 High windmills (left): 15 x 12, 15 x 10 High windmills (right): 15 x 12, 15 x 10 Low windmills (left) 15 x 15, 15 x 10 Low windmills (right) 15 x 15, 15 x 10 Alternating single hand: 15 x 30 x 2 Front squats: 15 x 35 x 2 43.15 total miles walked! Today was horrible. I've been in bed since 4:30 pm. It's now 12:24 and I just woke up. As soon as I'm done with this log, I'm going back to bed. I was many calories short today. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/reports...1&to=2012-05-31 I got into a giant fight with my husband today while we were out to get me new shoes (I got no shoes). Said fight culminated in me jumping out of his truck at a red light. So I did get my nightwalk in (at about 2pm, oh well), but it didn't get logged on my app. So no nighttime linky. I'm supposed to be leaving to go to my mom's tomorrow morning-ish, but I still have to pack and finish up laundry so I probably won't be leaving on time. I'm thinking of taking a rest day tomorrow. I haven't had a rest day in 2 weeks, but I'm afraid of rest days. Logging from my mother's house might also be sporadic. I'll have to update from my phone and I have troubles with that sometimes :/ That tea sounds delicious. I'll try it soon.

Hello lady goon who I found on the introduce yourself thread. I am following this log. I am also seconding adaz's suggestion of the ICE carbonated fruit drinks because they are super good. Consider what it is with your Pepsi drinking though. Is it the cola taste? The carbon? The caffeine? Is it because you just don't really like other things to drink? If it's the taste then limit yourself to one a day but make yourself actually savor that one. If it's the carbon try some of those calorie free carbonated fruit drinks. The ICE brand is one but there are lots of other kinds. If it's the caffeine then maybe start buying some caffeine free diet Pepsis and have just one caffeinated a day and then limit the rest to the cf ones. I had a major diet coke addiction and it was entirely 100% because of the caffeine which I knew that I needed to cut down so I started to ween myself off and drink only cf diet sodas now and I only have like one a day. Good luck!

I made it to my mom's house yesterday and ate some lovely gas station food on the way but still managed to be way under calorie goal again. I did no walks or kettlebell yesterday. Today, my mom and my 10 year old are going to come to a local running trail with me. My mom lives in wild, wonderful West Virginia and is surrounded by mountains that I am just not capable of walking yet. So I think while I am here, I'm going to have to do 1 walk a day, but I will definitely try my darnedest to make it longer. I only drank 2 sodas yesterday, despite traveling! So that's a step in the right direction. I'm 251.6 this morning. Hoping to do at least a 3 mile walk today and kettlebell. Have a happy Saturday! And thanks for all the soda tips and tricks. I really appreciate it all.

I missed answering it earlier, but the reasons I like my diet soda are the caffeine and it seems to be the only substance that truly quenches my thirst. Diet Pepsi just has this sharpness that cuts through my thirst. Water doesn't do it unless I'm walking or working out. And other types of drinks just leave this sugary sliminess on my tongue. I don't have a sweet tooth at all, so drinking diet soda isn't making me crave more sweets or anything. I rarely eat sweets at all. And I'm finding that I crash hard without my diet Pepsi. I just get to a point where I can't keep my eyes open and my head is pounding. I'm still working on it. Today I had 3. Yesterday I had 2. 1 was just not enough. I'm going to try to keep it at 2. Being away from home is making everything so much harder to deal with but I really am trying! I only walked 2 miles again today. It's super inconvenient to drive down to the walking trail twice a day and I still don't have the stamina to do 4 miles in one go. I did try to do an evening walk here at my mom's house, but I only made it .66 miles. I absolutely cannot do these hills around here. This has been my first major failure since I committed myself to getting healthy and I almost cried. These hills are just impossible for me. It was terrible. I also did kettlebell today. Again, I'm not typing all that up on my phone, but I improved slightly on a few of my sets. Ms. Happiness- I am so happy to hear that! It's hard for me to imagine I could be an inspiration to anyone, but it made me smile to read that today You can do it! Trying to navigate SA on my phone drives me insane, but as soon as I get back home next month, I promise to get involved in everyone's logs again. I FINALLY got new shoes. I dropped enough hints to my mom and she took me shopping. I knew my Skechers were bad, but I didn't how truly bad they were until I walked in my new kicks. My feet are singing praises to my mother. What a world of difference! I was way under calorie goal again. My weight isn't doing much still (252.4 tonight), but I am on my period and I do truly believe I'm building muscle. My clothes are really hanging on me differently even though the scale isn't dropping much. It's all good. I'm definitely not worried. I'm doing the work and it will come off. Slink- thanks for sounding off from the opposite end of the diet soda debate. It all helps me try to find my sustainable happy medium. I didn't get this fat in 2 weeks, so it's gonna take me a little longer to work all the kinks out. I'll get there! Night guys!

Spend 6 days walking those hills for .66 miles then take a rest day. The next day I bet you'll be amazed at home much easier they are. When I first started walking like.. 9-10 weeks ago I could barely make it up a hill .5 miles from my house and at the end I wanted to die. Now I barely notice, keep it up and don't get discouraged you will be amazed before you are halfway through. You're doing great!
