I have played this game for a million hours and never gave a gift to any NPC ever. And, I agree, Simones single quest apppears so early in the game and is so weird and unexplained that it is absolutely impossible to 'accidentally' get her as a love interest. Because you definitely need a guide in order to complete this quest in the best possible way, and if you are already using a guide why would you willfully ignore all the other NPC quests, or why would you give gifts to Simone, I don't get it.

Well I actually got Selene in my very first playthrough but I skipped all those cutscenes because I wanted to kill more big monster so it never occured to me what was actually happening.

It's really difficult to get one of the children as a Beloved. Simone's affection is maxed if you do her quest properly, but that's available fairly early on, so even if you do max hers you're extremely likely to max out one of the main love interests like the Duchess or Madeleine, or failing that Caxton.they're masterworks all

So I've finally gotten around to completing Dragon's Dogma and most of the expansion and I've liked it enough that I've decided to do a walkthrough/FAQ on an aspect of the game that I think is a bit confusing and which might help people out. I realize I'm a bit late to the Dragon's Dogma party, having only played the game after it becoming a Playstation Plus freebie title, but this thread seems to be going strong still, and if the OP happens to find the Walkthrough/FAQ useful, adding it to the OP would be OK with me. I don't wish to derail this thread, so any suggestions, concerns and comments on the Walkthrough/FAQ can be taken to PMs, required someone buys me that forums upgrade.

DRAGON'S DOGMA

HOW NOT TO BE A PAEDOPHILE

WALKTHROUGH AND FAQ

INTRO

Dragon's Dogma is a fun game where you get to kill a lot of cool monsters and then sometime during the end-game you may be shoehorned into a romantic relationship with a child. If fighting against cool monsters sounds like fun, but you would rather not be shoehorned into a romantic relationship with, say, a child who by game lore is supposed to be 14 years old because that is the age of consent in Japan or whatever, but actually looks and act like 10-12, as if 14 wasn't hosed up enough, then this walk-through is for you.

WHAT?

Dragon's Dogma has an objectively dull romance system which picks a romantic interest for your character sometime during the end-game. This pick is based solely on whichever NPC has the highest affinity for you, with basically every single non-hostile NPC in the entire gameworld being eligible, including children. Affinity is raised by either giving someone a gift or by completing quests, neither of these actions are inherently romantic in nature and you might just be surprised that a side-quest where you help a powerful merchant babysit his child for a few hours, playing a game of hide and seek and catch, is considered as the player showing romantic interest in a child. Rightfully ignoring the romance system entirely, a romantic interest will still be chosen, and a relatively small pool of central quest givers and NPCs with multiple side-quests related to them, will most likely be chosen as the unavoidable romantic interest, at least two of these characters, being children.

HOW TO AVOID YOUR UNAVOIDABLE ROMANTIC INTEREST BEING ONE OF THE CHILD-CHARACTERS

Do not give any kind of gift to a child-character, ever. Make any one non-child NPC in the game like you to the point where they start blushing when you see them, most easily done by completing a bunch of Core and Side-quests for a central character. The items which are suitable for gifting will also state in their item description who favours them, so simply give these to appropriate non-child characters: Congratulations you will now probably not be shoe-horned into having a child as your romantic interest.

Q: The possibility of the romance system selecting a child to be the romantic interest of the player character is an unintended oversight of the romance system.

A: No. At least two children which are able to become the PCs romantic interest have unique lines that only appears in this situation.

Q: In some countries the age of legal consent is lower than 21, 18, 16, 14, or whatever, and is even completely absent in some cultures.

A: hosed up if true.

Q: Caring about the possibility of romancing a bunch of pixels sounds pretty SJW tumbleresque, doesn't it?

A: Idiot bitch retard human being friend of the family.

Q: If I would rather not have my PC waking up in his bed with a child hovering above him, are there any particular NPC who I should raise the affinity of instead of the child NPCs?

A: Here is a handy list of reasonable non-children to befriend.

Blondeknight: Pros: Pretty and clearly of age, his preferred gift is pies which are cheap and plentiful.

Ladyknight: Pros: Pretty and clearly of age. She has lot of core and side quests available so she will probably end up liking you even if you ignore her completely outside of quests. The same goes for nearly every single female NPC in the entire game-world who takes directly part in any single quest.

Madeline: Pros: Uh-huh-huh-huh. Uh-huh-huh-huh-huh. Is not a child. Is a merchant. Cons: Everything else.

Every single merchant: Pro: Merchants are the only characters that it is really worthwhile to raise the affinity of. Raising the affinity of whichever one sells the best gear for your class is especially nice. CONS: Some of the merchants are married couples and you may feel like a jerk by breaking them up.

Banditmaleguy: Pros: Sort of maybe helpful in a side-quest or two and is easily impressed by skulls, which are plentiful and cheap trash items that he loves. Is most definitely not a child. Cons: Located a bit out of the way.

Banditfemale: Same as above, but is a bother to deal with if your PC is male and especially if he has a beard, as you'll have to wear a disguise (a pretty dress) and/or lose your beard temporarily and may become involved in a questline that is more problematic than the ending to the original Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

Just about every single throwaway character in the entire game-world: Pros: Any random, throwaway male NPC is easily impressed by being gifted fish and meats, as a man's heart is best reached through his stomach, and any female NPC is easily wooed by gifting her flowers, as bitches loves flowers. Cons: You'll probably never be able to find these characters more than once as they are completely forgettable, but you wont have any good reason to want to either.

Q: Selene is not a child, but some kind of magical creature, probably, but she is old for sure, and extremely sexy with her after 2000 years of life on this gay earth still-developing breasts, pig tails haircut and completely demure, submissive personality.

A: If it walks like a child, talks like a child and looks like a child, please try not to gently caress it.

It's easy to wind up with Symone if you abuse gifts to get an easy Golden Idol. Tempting, but not worth it. The only way to set her straight after that is to throw that little trust fund baby down a flight of stairs or two, which are conveniently located behind her house.

There's an item that sets affection to zero in BBI, as well.

I sometimes do this to wandering pawns. Not really sure why.

One time I picked up a Cassardis NPC and threw him into the water. He stood up and blankly stared at me as the brine took him away.

I recently finished a playthrough and did the post game content. I was a bad rear end warrior or something, my pawn was a mage. No matter what her inclination was, she always seemed very underwhelming, hardly casted anything cool and was simply carried through the entire game by myself and the other pawns.

I've started the game over as I enjoyed the hell out of it, only this time I reversed the roles. I'm the mage, she being a strider. Holy gently caress is magic using boring, but her? She has become infinitely better at everything. She uses bow skills, climbs hydras, does everything so right I sometimes forget she is AI. Strider pawns loving own.

Here is the secret. If you want to do cool magic things, you shouldn't play a mage. They have the most boring magic. Go to an advanced or hybrid class to get cool magic.

Sometimes it does become a situation where you keep jumping around and cancelling out a spell because you keep getting followed, but there are a lot of neat spells outside of what mages can do.

MKs and MAs each have their own special debuff they can cast off of staves (Sleep and Curse respectively, if I remember right). All they had to do was trade away the ability to heal, and I mean, who needs healing, really? You'd be surprised just how many troublesome enemies just need to take a little nap.

Mage pawns can be finnicky, especially if you try sticking them with a bunch of cool-looking offensive spells, because deep in their little mage pawn hearts, all they want to do is heal and buff and run around until someone else needs healing and buffing. I had similar problems that you did, until I stuck a bunch of utility spells and a single piddly High Levin on her and set her up with Utilitarian/Medicant. She didn't cast anything much cooler than High Grapnel or High Levin, but the party never went without enchantments, maxed health or Spellscreen. Eventually gave her a gold-rarified Legion's Might and called it a day.

Has anyone messed with save game editing on the ps3? I've pretty much played the game to death and only load it up occasionally to play dress-up. And it'd be nice to just cheat in all of the rare bitterblack/online ur-dragon drops for dress-up purposes without having to grind cursed gear or deal with actually fighting the online ur-dragon. So if anyone could write a quick tutorial, that'd be swell.

Edit: Also being able to nerf my own stats would be nice, so I could enjoy the base game while wearing whatever outfit cobbled together from my massive gear inventory without steamrolling everything.

Anyone still playing this? Picked it up during the sale a few weeks ago and it's loving great.

I'm just working through BBI now. I'm a little worried about the damage I'm doing though, I'm using heavenly dagger things from offline Ur-Dragon (dragonforged) and a fighter pawn I hired does way more damage per hit than I do with hundred kisses (I'm a ranger). Not sure if maybe that's just a side effect of doing way more hits in a given time span or maybe he just has a really good weapon?

If anyone is still playing and wants to hire a pawn I'd love some RC.. I'm on PSN as Dahkren, Pawn is Miri. She is level.. 110 or something. Scather with the holy enchanment and random damage spells (miasma, ingle, comestion) and terrible equipment.

Genocyber
Jun 4, 2012

You might have poor stats. Due to how defense works, you need to do a bit of min/maxing to kill stuff if you're not overleveled. If your damage is even a single point lower than the enemy's defense, it will be reduced immensely. If it it just a single point higher, it will barely be reduced at all. If you kept Fournival alive, go and buy as many Conqueror's Periapts as you can, and use 4 at a single time. You can have up to 4 buffs and same buffs will stack, and using 4 will boost your strength to ~200%, which should allow you to challenge most enemies on BBI.

dahkren
Jan 11, 2006
Yea I read about the min-maxing stuff after I was most of the way through the game and just said whatever to it, so I've just been ranger since level 17. Upgrading my heavens kiss to silver dragonforged made a huge difference, really need to find a better bow and upgrade that. I sort of hate climbing, especially the dragons, but my bow doesn't do great damage unless I'm using great gamble.

Finished up BBI first run, was pretty fun. Final boss was kind of a joke but I'm fairly overlevelled for him I suppose. Second run through should be fun.

If you want to add another huge source of damage, you can knock your arrows with blast arrows. While it might be inconvenient to maintain a regular stock of them, they can be pretty ridiculous.

Also, cycle one of BBI ain't no thing. Second cycle is where things get real (at least moreso than cycle one).

After a few false starts I finally got around to properly playing this game a few weeks ago, and I'm having an absolute blast. I just recently fought Grigori, in a boss battle that was so great I'm actually annoyed that the game's weird save file thing means I can't go back and play it whenever I want, and now I'm slowly but surely working my way through Bitterblack Isle. My party just got curbstomped by Death in the Bloodless Stockade and I had to Liftstone out of there, but I found a supremely powerful magic bow which means I'll have less trouble next time. I also tool around Gransys every now and then to get some of my stuff dragonforged by any passing wyrms I happen to find. I've basically run out of non-Bitterblack stuff to do at this point though, and I feel a bit sad that soon it's going to be time to turn in the final quest and (hopefully) bring back blue skies and normal goblins to Gransys. It's that rare game that's so good you don't want it to end.
