Question I haven't seen asked yet: I'm on XBox, and I have a character created on my hard drive and my cloud save. Which one's pawn will my friends see? The last one I rented with? Does it matter? What if I stuck a thumb drive in and created a third character and pawn?

As a slightly related aside, I created a new character that had a pawn out and helping a friend, and noticed that when I reached the riftstone and created a new pawn with the new character, I got some exp and money that my previous pawn had gained out adventuring.

Unrelated, but is there some trick to teaching pawns to throw people? It looks like they learn other tendencies based on what you do, so does that hold for pawns as well? Would throwing bandits off cliffs teach your pawn to be a crazy bandit throwing bastard? There is no "throw people" potion at the rift shop.
I think that higher level players tend to not change pawns out as often as lower level ones are wont to do - especially newer players tend to rent a pawn for thirty minutes and then change their mind right away (or probably, get them killed).

As for teaching your pawn to throw enemies, it seems to be pretty tough to do. I spent most of the weekend on two different character and pawn combos, with my main character spending the majority of most fights with humanoid or smaller enemies, and throwing exploding barrels whenever possible.

I noticed that my pawn didn't pick up on grappling and carrying enemies for a very long time, but eventually I started noticing her picking up wolves and carrying them around (which I view as progress toward the goal of tossing them around,) where she'd previously spent all her time just grappling and holding them in one spot until they were killed. I have faith that she's progressing in the right direction, though! :)

Similarly, throwing exploding barrels seems pretty tricky to train for me, mainly because there are rarely red barrels close enough to a fight to use them where I can be fairly sure my pawn will observe it. I have nmoticed that in some places, when i grab a red barrel my pawn will also copy my lead and walk around carrying a barrel. Progress, to be sure however, I've yet to spy her throwing a barrel at an enemy.. Again, I suspect a lot of that is just getting barrels and enemies in the right proximity to my pawn.

Anybody else have any experiences, suspicions, opinions, or observatinos on pawn training? I've recently been wondering if having two "opposing" personality traits is a good idea, and changed my Challenger/Scather pawn, into a Challenger/Nexus pawn, in hopes that she won't be confused as to which enemy target would be priority.. I started wondering this when I saw my Guardian/Scather pawn really never seemed to do anything, and wondered if the two traits were giving her conflicting priorities..

When your pawn comes back from helping another, however, you're told you'll receive (among other things) the exp it gained while away.

I've never noticed a big bump in how fast he levels up, though. He always noticeably drags behind my level by a handful of monsters, but that's not a significant difference and, like you said, can be explained by the time he spends dead (assuming that a dead pawn gains no experience, anyway, as he's never been forfeit).

Maybe the message is a lie, or was added before a change to the exp system and never changed.
My current character's pawn has never died for more than 30 seconds, and tends to level before my main character by a few hundred EXP or so, just enough for a couple kills before my rank and level both increase.

"Quest Experience" refers to your pawn knowing the location of the objective ("I know the way, follow me, Arisen!") or the tips they will offer up if you talk to them at certain points when you have a quest set as Priority - you can sometimes very clearly see how some pawns in your party know about the quest and how some don't, just by the red "Chat Bubble" above the heads of some but not others in your party.

How do you change personality traits? The only two I've ever seen available to me are Challenger/Scather.
Using the DPad to order pawns in different circumstances, pushes them into certain tendencies. There's also a dude in the Encampment who sells potions for adjusting personality traits, he's right beside the riftstone.

Additionally, your pawns will tend to copy you, os if you run around mid-combat picking flowers, you should very much expect that your pawn will start trying to do the same poo poo..!

The rest of it I gleaned from here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/626514-dragons-dogma/62862300

quote:

Gameplay Style : How you play the game will affect your pawn's inclination.

Trait to Raise........Action Taken

Scathing................Enter battle with enemies as they appear (I have found if you use "Go" pretty often in combat, they tend to end up Scather very quickly.)
Medicant................Heal, remove status effects, use the "Come" order in combat.
Mitigator..................Bring down weak targets first
Challenger.............Focus on long range attackers or enemies with support skills (No idea how to do this without potions, personally. Way, way easier!)
Utilitarian................Use support skills and enchantments
Guardian.................Use the "Help" and "Come" commands often, avoid using "Go"
Nexus......................Quickly heal your pawns and remove their status ailments
Pioneer....................Use the "Go" command when you are not in combat (be REALLY careful using "Go" out of combat, if you DON'T want a Pioneer tendency! I try and make sure I NEVER use "go" unless I've already dealt damage to at least one opponent, to make sure I'm fully engaged in combat)
Acquisitor................Pick up items (if you do this in combat, you aer creating your own problem down the line..)

quote:

Answer
S | Scather : + Target strongest foes, might be more aggressive in fighting
+ | Medicant : + Concern about HP and debuffs, heals
M | Mitigator : + Targets weak enemies
C | Challenger : + Targets ranged/mage enemies
U | Utilitarian : + Better teamwork, possibly skill use
G | Guardian : + Guards the Arisen
N | Nexus : + Guards ally pawns
P | Pioneer : Scouts ahead
A | Acquisitor : + Gathers items, even during battle

Using basically this stuff, I was able to train my fighter to be a Scather/Challenger very easily using nothing but "Go" when in combat, and "come/help" when riding on giant enemies (I never chased around archers, I just gave her one Challenger potion and it stuck), and she stayed that way for a full day, until I fed her a few potions to make her a Challenger/Nexus, instead.

Potions tend to take one to put a skill in the secondary slot, and two or three to get it into the primary slot.. I suspect that they're percentiles or something, so continuing to push their primary trait consistently, will probably reinforce it and keep it from "slipping".

Short characters move slower than larger characters, but everybody sprints the same rate.

Yeah, as Funkmaster General said, you will only have one "online" (available to rent?) at a time for recruitment however, whichever pawn someone rented will stay identical to the moment they were first rented until the player releases them, and re-add your new pawn. This means you can totally have two different pawns and "push" them out online at will for people to rent (and then swap between them at whim), and even if you delete that character+pawn then they'll still be floating around helping a few random pubbies or friends for some time, possibly.

One fun thing about this factoid though, is that if you delete a character whose pawns are out actively helping people, when you make a new character (on that specific save device/slot) your new pawn will instantly gain a ton of knowledge and give you any gifts or RC which were being held in the queue for you to rent and collect them.
