As for the 360 install, trying disconnecting from Live before installing. Soul Calibur 5 had this same issue and that fixed it.

Also, is the difficulty curve in DD ala dark souls, where you learn the game a get better as a player to overcome enemies, or more like traditional jRPGs where you basically just have to grind for better stats before you can take on the big monsters?

A mix of both really. Most monsters simply involve using the right tools and tactics (and I mean that closer to a DS way than most JRPGs) but you need to level to get the proper tools to combat some enemies.

Basically, skill can win battles alone if you're really good but levelling makes them a bit easier though usually still a decent challenge. The easiest way to bring down an enemy is to know how to exploit its weakness. However, higher levels will also give you more tools to use in such exploitation.

How bad are the one-shots in general? Usually that sort of thing really pisses me off although I did trudge all the way through Demon's and Dark Souls falling off cliffs many times, but the frustration from one-shots mostly comes down to how quickly I can retry.

If you can load manual saves made from anywhere in the world it wouldn't be so bad, but I've heard completely opposite things about how that works--Can you manually save anywhere and then load from that save so that you don't get 40 minutes into a quest and then have to do it all over again, because one fight at the end one-shotted you and the game never autosaved before then?

Usually you get a good idea whether or not an enemy's dangerous when it kills a pawn on you.

You can save anywhere outside of combat but you only have that one manual save slot

Best spot I found for rats so far is the well in the starting town. Just don't go very deep unless you're prepared for a challenging fight.

360 has a better frame rate but with screen tearing (alleviated by switching the console to 720p)
PS3 has a less stable frame rate but no tearing

PS3 has a mandatory 4.5gb install. 360 install is highly recommended though and clocks in around 6-8 gb.

Communities seem quite active on both versions so get the game for whichever controller you prefer.
