Having someone else draw one of your characters can be pretty insightful. It helps give perspective to see how other artists interpret your character. Plus, who doesn't like getting fan art?

This thread is basically an art-exchange for art goons. Draw someone else's character, and then someone will draw yours. Maybe even multiple someones. It's all in fun. Discussing good techniques for character design is A-OK, as is posting fan art you've done of other characters not from this thread.

A few suggested guidelines:

For your original character:
  • Try to draw someone else's character before asking for your own to be drawn. It keeps the ball rolling.
  • Link to your character or website so people know exactly what you're hoping to see redrawn. Adding tags or character descriptions (in spoiler tags) can help.
  • Don't ask for too much. If you're hoping to see a group shot of all 24 of your characters, you might be disappointed.
  • Someone might draw your character in a less-than-stellar fashion. If you can't handle that, then maybe this isn't the place to post.
  • Be patient! Drawing takes time -- it might be a couple days until someone redraws your character.

For drawing someone else's characters:
  • Try to keep it in the same general rating. Don't do an R-rated drawing of someone's PG-comic. You'd think this would go without saying, but... internet.
  • If there's a character description, keep it in mind while drawing. You might find a way to express that character's personality in a way the original artist didn't think of.
  • Please mention whose character you've redrawn when you post your work. It's tough to keep track of, otherwise.

Can we also use this thread for character design talk? I'm always interested in seeing peoples' approaches and thoughts when it comes to character designs.

For myself I am terrible when it comes to more fantastic or science-fictional character designs. They just end up looking a bit stupid, or fairly utilitarian, not cool and stylish like others. I'm better when it comes to ordinary contemporary clothes. On that thought, I was wondering what people do when they approach "Character design" from the perspective of a contemporary setting where people (presumably) change their clothes from day to day? Do you choose a "theme" for your characters? How do you make them consistent and recognizable, even if they might not be wearing the same things in every picture? And, for you fantasy/superhero/sci-fi people out there, what do you do to approach a more fantastical outfit?

I do a webcomic called Blasphemous Saga Fantasy which people seem to like. I'd be interested in seeing anyone's take on any character, but in particular I'd love to see others' interpretations of the character Lina's design. Something about her overall design has not been sitting well with me lately. But really, any character, because my relatively simple designs probably lend themselves to a lot of interesting reinterpretation.

I will of course draw others' characters too! In return for sure, but also of my own volition, just not when I should be sleeping.

Probably neither reading nor working.

I would also suggest making this a general goon-made fanart thread. I'm kind of curious to see what people on this board would do with lot's of other popular properties, not just each other's.

Though if people are going to request someone draw their stuff specifically, making them contribute first is probably a good guideline.

Exactly this. I've updated the OP with this and also to mention that fan-art in general is okay, though the focus is still on redrawing requests from the thread. I don't think we need to get into heavy critique but discussing the finer points of character design is always cool.

The other art trade thread fizzled out after a couple pages and hasn't been updated in weeks, so this new thread might serve as a fresh start.

You should post your own drawings, Nessa! You'll have a lot more control over the actual appearance, and be able to give us more detailed information than those little pictures you've included.

To make this a more useful learning experience, why don't we include some guidelines for critiques? I've engaged in exercises like this before and I have a few suggestions.

Originator

  • Post some of your own drawings of your characters, or somewhere we can get a look at them.
  • Post a few descriptions of your character(s) in spoiler tags

Critiquer

  • Based on just your glance at the character art, try to analyze who the character might be before looking at the description
  • After looking at the description, give feedback on what might bring out more aspects of that character's personality, or what outfits might fit them better, etc.

I think that if we have some of these kinds of guidelines, it might focus the discussion and help us to improve. Also, it's kind of neat to see peoples' firsthand impressions of characters -- this helps us understand what readers or viewers might expect when they see our characters.

I saw the owl guy before the rule change and had a couple of ideas about him. Hope that's ok.

First I thought that Lars' owl form should have some connection with his human form. So I switched the owl's yellow eyes to blue like in his human form.

I thought a plain white owl was maybe a little mundane when magic and curses are involved. I also thought his owl form should tie in a little more with his back story. Since Snowy owls usually have black spots, I thought, "What if his spots were actually runes that tied into his curse thing?" Maybe regular people think they are just owl spots, but people into the occult know better. vv

Okay so I did a slight redesign of this character. I didn't polish it and color it because I'm not super happy with it and not great with human anatomy right now. Anyway. I kept the possessed cloak but made her outfit not so revealing, which I thought was kind of unnecessary. The cloak is now more of an all over thing. It fully wraps around her (I imagine it can be taken off or something) but when it's on her like this I imagine it somewhat fusing with her. So kind of like a Doc Oc relationship. And I made the tentacle thing into more of a ghostly aspect to go with her paranormal investigator stuff. The cloak in this picture for instance is picking up a clue for her at whatever place she's investigating. I imagine her cloak would be constantly moving so there's also other "ghosts" coming out of it. The cloak I would imagine would be really fun to draw every panel because it never has to look exactly the same and can be constantly moving, like smoke. I hope I didn't deviate too much from the original design. I was trying to change somethings while not changing the character.

Well here's my guy, just C&Ping from the Art Trade thread:

Here's my character Rylant. Despite what he looks like, he's not a villain (he's actually a super hero. That arm has super strength). These are also older pictures (several years old actually) so his design isn't quite the same anymore (smaller ears, less crazy fur everywhere, etc). He's a teddy bear. I have a whole story with this guy that I want to tell, but I want to make sure it's perfect first. Still trying to figure it out. Also it doesn't show it in the picture but he's got sharp teeth.

I also did a version of Nessa's Branwen. Possessed clothing is a good opportunity to show some personality. I don't really do character-based art that much anymore, but I used to. So I decided to do a rough, quick sketch of one of my old character designs.

Did a bunch of drawing at the pub tonight, so thought I would post a couple members of Branwen's supporting cast.

This is Lily and Lars. Lars is also the owl. Lily is Branwen's best friend and a practicing witch. She's pretty punk rock. It's impossible to make out, but the writing on her shirt says "Heavy Kittens". It's her favourite band. Lars is an old timey Norseman trapped in the body of a snowy owl after being cursed. He can communicate to Lily through her dreams.

And I also found an old sketch of the whole gang from R.I.P. (Rose Industries Paranormal), my NaNoWriMo novel.

The great dane is Marcus (he's supposed to be black). Did you know that great danes used to be given as gifts to help ward off ghosts and evil spirits? Maybe that's why Scooby Doo is a great dane. Anyway, Marcus can hunt ghosts.

The dude next to Lily is Lucas. Lucas is a werewolf and a pretty boy with dark hair. He's a good werewolf though and wants to find the werewolf that turned him and killed his parents.

The dude on the far right is Jeffery. He's an anthropology professor and a skeptic who is just along for the ride. Short brown hair, look like a nerd.

Here's Chaltab's character, Ragnarok. I think that's a pretty cool name, actually.

Cool! I like what you did! The sliminess is interesting. In the story she's in, the cloak isn't exactly sentient, as in it isn't aware of the outside world, so it doesn't interact with things. The demon was put in her coat so that she could easily keep an eye on it and prevent people from trying to release it.

And yeah, it's totally fun to draw it differently in every panel. It's like drawing Batman's cape. I had drawn her with the fishnet tights because I was really into Black Canary and other friends of Batman at the time. I actually drew her first and came up with the character later. She's less superheroey in her actual stories, so she usually just wears normal people clothes with the coat.

I took a lot of artistic liberties with Brutus, hope you don't mind:

The armor looked kind of organic, so I made it more of a symbiotic relationship, the purple growing over his skin and inserting tubes to gain nutrients.

For future reference, and this applies to everyone, don't crop your picture off at the ankles. Even if you're not too comfortable drawing feet, draw 'em anyway, especially for a character design. It's better to have something than expect someone to just make it up themselves, and you can only get better at drawing feet if you practice them.

Here's my character, Jay:

Jay is a spirit of the mountains and one of the best talisman carvers around. He's become jaded over the years from being imprisoned by a merchant and forced to carve trinkets. This is what he looks like disguised as a mortal.
