This may be a little unorthodox since I'm probably the first to post something that isn't organic, but I think some input could be helpful anyway.![]() I'm working on a spaceship design, but I'm trying to make it look fluid and fishlike, without making it too smooth looking/appleesqe. It's supposed to be a pirate vessel made by a dead alien species that considered conflict an integral part of their culture, as such they considered their ships to be works of art in their own right. I've looked at a lot of fish for inspiration (I even gave the ship barbels!), and the patterns are supposed have kind of a lionfish crossed with Dazzle Camouflage look, I was also inspired by a concept Chris Foss did for one of the failed Dune films. I want the ship to be kind of a contrast to the standard "sci-fi battleships in space" ships, but I don't want to go too far and have it look too alien either. I haven't really thought too much about colour scheme at the moment, I just picked something that I thought could work.

One thing you can do is, firstly, break the ship into a bunch of segments that fit together, like a car or a jet. OR A BUG Then maybe add some minor greebling around it that keeps it from looking like an iPod without breaking up the shape. Moebius was good at it. I took a whack at it with your design and, as is the way with these things, it looks like a dick now. Hopefully you'll see what I mean though.

It's usually a good idea to start with sideviews so you can focus on the design without having to worry about rendering the ship correctly Heres some ideas: ![]() I tried to stay in the ballpark of your original, but I think I ended up making most of the designs too smooth. _jink fucked around with this message at Dec 30, 2012 around 01:10 |

I am looking at this entire page and I can see only dicks. I tried taking it in a different direction.![]() Bearing in mind the ships=art idea, I went for a more elegant design somewhere between a wasp and a seadragon. I'm imagining the lower fins here are aimable thrusters hooked to an engine in its belly and the S-shaped "spine" along its back is primarily to give it enough support to shrug off the glancing impacts that would be common if the pilot tried to use that ripper tail to its fullest - a flexible neck on the cockpit would also protect the passengers during this. The rein-like external wires connecting that little cockpit laser thing to the neck are just to balance out the front and play up that seahorse look.

Wow these are all really great, thanks!![]() I haven't really changed much drastically, but I've done some tweaking based on your advice. I've lowered the cockpit to give it a curved neck, which kinda makes it look like a Plesiosaurus. I've also bulked up the rear of the ship a little by giving it adjustable rear fins and wings, because I liked the adjustable thruster idea. I've also added a little bit of detail/plating. All very rough still, but I think I'm making progress.

Kazerad posted:You're welcome, tank! I really like that first design, so I had a go at it! Made it a bit more alien and balanced, giving it a longer tail to counteract the weight of a lengthy bipedal body. I think you mentioned that these fellows are cold-weather creatures, so from an evolutionary standpoint, having a thick tail to store fat isn't unheard of. They'd probably curl up with it and use their fluffy fur for insulation.

So I'm designing characters for an animation (it's gonna be CG, so they can be complicated, but I'm going for a sorta cartoony style). The two main characters are these simian creatures who are competing against each other in a battle/contest. The guy is a confident rocker-type, and the girl is tough, no nonsense, and competitive. I'm not sure exactly what colors to go with, and I'm open to all suggestions for their designs. Though I'm set on the thick eyebrows on the girl. The guy ![]() The girl

Well, I've had these characters for awhile and I've been trying to get some kind of critique or feed-back on them for awhile, so I might as well try here. Couldn't hurt right? Cross-post from the draw another character thread: Possibly Nsfw concept sketches: The characters are "ghosts" meant to represent how they've died and their last moments of thought. ![]() Possible name(s): Petunia, Persephone A character based off the Woman of Willendorf. Except with bee-stings. Tried to give her a more, LFD "Witch GTFO" pose, where she would turn up to look at you. (In this case down - since shes a colossal golem of bee-stings/mixed with a pixie (legs and wings)). Died by allergic reaction to bees, final thoughts were who would watch over her garden when she's gone. ![]() Possible name(s): Icarus, Orville, Wilbur (Maybe Orville Wilbur) I was looking for a flying "ghost" with this one, more along the lines of a buzzard, for its starved appearance - originally he held the rat with his leg in a pose that would make Johnny Five-Aces proud. I based the skull off of a real bird-skull but wanted to keep some human like features. Lived a life of abuse, tried to get away one day from flying up high. Died falling off a high-place, wished he could fly. Inspired by Jenny's childhood from Forrest Gump.

The bee sting golem is a cool idea, but I promise that anybody who looks at her right now will think she's a shambling lump of boobs. The concentric circles you've got going on look exactly like areolae and nipples, plus the spherical shapes just look like breasts. Making the lumps less perfectly circular and growing out of the central mass rather than attached to each other at the edges will do a lot to help them look more like allergic swellings and less like tits. ![]() This is my attempt. I'm not very good - I prefer the top-heavy look of your design, and your face looks much better, so you can take or leave this advice as you choose. Keep going with it! Designing horrific monstrosities is one of life's simple pleasures.

Your completely right about the nipple thing, I couldn't really get a good idea to make it look like bee-stings so I wanted to make the puncture holes more noticeable, I think I was going to have bees fly out of them. I can definitely do without the extra circle around the puncture wound - and to make the bumps less round. Next time I draw this, I'll try to cut down on the boobish appearance. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the advice. Honestly, the boobish appearance is pretty gruesome and it could work if you don't mind people initially thinking that your character is a boob golem. As for the puncture marks, shading is the key - a small central puncture hole and then shading the inflammation, rather than just drawing a circle. Like I said before, my favourite part of your design is definitely the face, it has that grotesque swollen look without being too bulbous.

Decided to give it a go - I'm still half asleep so it's a bit messy. I tried to give them a more simian look, though I haven't colored them - which I think is what you were concerned about. (Also missed the part where you were set on the think eye-brows)
