Before finding this thread a couple of days ago, I could not have cared less about mountaineering. Now I can't get enough of the documentaries and I've bought more books about Everest and K2 than I knew existed.

Seeing as I'm in Japan for a couple of years, I want to climb Mt. Fuji. How doable is it for someone whose only prior "climbing" experience is a bit of skiing in north Italy/south Austria? Should I do some smaller hills/mountains first? I need to see if there are any in my area. I just got here a couple of weeks ago, so haven't really had a chance to explore yet. If anyone happens to know some good spots in Aomori Prefecture, let me know.

I climbed Fuji in July last year, and it isn't an overly hard climb, even for someone out of shape as i am.
Recommend climbing it on a weekday, as i heard it can get very crowded on the weekend, i went up on a Monday night and whilst there were a quite a few people around, it never got to the point where i had to stop and wait for people in front of me.

Also make sure you travel at night, the views when the sun rises are awesome.

The body of the man who fell into the crevasse last week was recovered. I can only hope he didn't suffer for long.

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/...38869977&type=1

quote:

After a week of trying, late in the afternoon on March 19, Parks Canada Visitor Safety Specialists recovered the body of a man missing on the Wapta Traverse in Yoho National Park. Parks Canada was first notified of a distress signal at 12:26 am on March 13 and immediately initiated a search for a group of three missing skiers. From dawn to dusk on March 13 and 14, the rescue team made multiple helicopter-assisted and ground-based rescue attempts. All attempts were unsuccessful due to blizzard conditions and high avalanche hazard.

With a break in the weather on March 15, rescue crews were able to access the distress call area at first light. In the early afternoon, two of the missing skiers were located in good health. The pair was well-equipped for the blizzard conditions and dug a snow cave for shelter while they waited for help to arrive. It was also on March 15 that the rescue team learned the third member of the ski party had fallen into a nearby crevasse the night of March 12. Rescuers were able to get to the edge of crevasse that day, but worsening conditions did not allow enough time for a rescue attempt. Poor visibility and severe snow storms hampered numerous further attempts to return to the crevasse from March 15 to March 18.

With the weather finally clearing on March 19, a team of seven rescuers was able to return to the crevasse and, late in the afternoon, extricate the missing skier. The victim had been buried and rescuers had to shovel through several metres of snow inside the crevasse to recover his body. The rescue team and all Parks Canada personnel wish to extend their sincerest condolences to the deceased skier's family and friends.

The link goes to a small photo album of the rescue and recovery.

Shouldn't that be

14 attempts
9 fatalities

9/14= 64%

?

The percentage thing is kind of a bullshit statistic. Basically it's the number of people who did it completely without dying divided by the number of people who died there, ignoring people who just tried and died or tried and gave up but lived. Those groups are obviously not totally inclusive so it's not really a percentage, but it still gives a decent picture of how ridiculous the route is. It's more common to die than succeed, basically.

I went with my dad to one of the NG Live lectures about 15 years ago which had Viesturs talking about climbing. I remember him being one of my heroes then having just read Into Thin Air and High Exposure by David Breashears. I don't think he had finished the 14 eight-thousanders by the time of that talk.

He certainly hadn't, he finished them in 2005 according to Wikipedia. So you saw him while he was trying to do the 14. That's really awesome.

Both Apa and Lhapka Sherpa eventually moved the Utah taking menial jobs such as delivering pizzas for many years since they both wanted better education access for their children.

Education access is another big problem in Sherpa community since the remote nature of villages means the kid spend 4 hour roundtrip each day just walking to the local school.

You can't prove it
won't happen.

Ueli Steck is up to more of his shenanigans. He wants to climb multiple peaks in the Swiss Alps in a single day, summitting one and then paragliding down the base of the next one to start over and repeat the process several times. Notably though, before this endeavour started he had no experience of handling a paraglider.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yns694E5Qg

Following this, his next adventure is with italian partner-in-crime Simone Moro. It was ~60 years ago that Everest was first summitted, and to mark this occasion Steck and Moro plan to climb the South Face alpine style. No sherpas, no supplemental oxygen.

News about this covered here:

Your friendly neighbourhood Postie.

I volunteered to do a new thread earlier but in all honesty I don't have the time to do it justice. FYI it's the 60 year anniversary of Hillary and Norgay summiting this year. I was thinking the thread title should be something along the lines of 'Everest 2013 - 60 years and nothing learned' .......or similar anyway.

Edit- hrm I wonder if it being the anniversary will mean there will be more Bucket-listers up there than in other years?

This thread has been fantastic. It begins with a Canadian woman dying near the summit, descends into how stupid climbing Everest with no experience is, ski lifts, and helicopters. Then rises from the ashes with book reviews and Nepal trekking excursions. I have no interest in mountaineering but have bought Into Thin Air, High Crimes, and K2, with more books in my wishlist. Mt Everest casts a long shadow.
