Gloves: So as not to touch this filthy reality.

VIKINGS ARE COMING

Big Banner

Crusader Kings II is a grand strategy game made by Paradox Interactive, who are, by all accounts, that rare double whammy of super game nerds and super history nerds. You pick a character from the year 1066 in a world covering Europe, North Africa and the Middle East and attempt to lead their dynasty to gold and glory through multiple generations over hundreds of years. Technically it is real time, but because you can pause it and adjust the play speed all the way down to a crawl if you like it plays more like a turn based game.

Do you seek to build an immortal empire and conquer all of this?

If the answer is yes then you should probably find a different game. You are far more likely to spend your time desperately trying to prevent your rogue bastard brother from usurping your crown, agonising over whether a Scottish princess or a French duchess would make a better bride for your heir, or if murdering your own wife because she is past child bearing age can be justified by the fact that the realm needs a first born son. Do you think you would enjoy mumbling things like "The Crown cannot bear such an expense for long..." or "That damned fool, off with his head!" while playing a computer game? If the answer to that question is yes, then read on.

Literally every ruler in the game is playable. You can pick a lowly count or a mighty emperor as the avatar of your ambition, and every single character has their own plans to complete, envies to rue, scores to settle. Every character has an opinion about every other character, factoring in dozens of traits such as cultural and religious differences, past actions, factional rivalries and personal qualities. Every character has an heir, and when your character dies you then play as your heir, generation by generation. I like to pretend that my first character was an evil wizard that is possessing his descendants, but that is optional for you. Children inherit traits from their parents and mentors and using these elements you can groom people for different purposes.

Here is a trailer that I think does a good job of showing the kind of thinking that goes into a typical play experience: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzkVTDfxIUI

As you can see, this is not a game where you think "soon my armies will sweep across the land" but more "oh crap look at all this stuff that is happening in my kingdom". No matter how big and powerful you become chances are that something is going to wreck it, whether it is a succession crisis, a weak new king, untimely death or a surprise invasion from an unexpected source, things don't tend to have a stable status quo for long.

Yes, but that is not the point. Here, this is what battles look like in Crusader Kings II:

Think of it as being more like Risk or Civ, the fighting isn't the point, more the results of it. As a rule, whoever has more soldiers wins, and whoever controls more territory can summon the largest levies. Troop types do matter and some provinces have defensive bonuses, but generally whoever has more, wins. Like in the real world. You're often not alone though; you'll have allies, sometimes many, sometimes much bigger than you, that will deploy their armies in support of your wars.

While we're on the topic, raising armies is handled very well. Each province you control provides a levy - troops that are sworn to you and your bannermen - and when you go to war you can summon these levies; they appear in their province, you gather them all together and then you fight your war. At the end of the fighting you dismiss the levies and they vanish from the map ready to be summoned again. There is no micro-managing for training of troops at all, which is sweet.

You spend most of your time trying to ensure that you and your descendants remain in power while slowly expanding your territory. You can't just send an army at your neighbours to conquer them because you want to, the game uses a system of cassus belli, or Cause For War. If you or any of your vassals have inherited claims to other lands you can press those claims using military power. You can also press what are known as "De Jure" claims, which is to say that if an area is traditionally considered part of your domain due to your titles then you will always have a claim to press there - The King of Ireland, for example, will forever have cassus belli to invade any part of Ireland should it ever be lost, through invasion or inheritance, for example. There is always the option of sending your Chancellor into a territory with the intent of bribing and bullying your way into fabricating a claim for the area, but this can take time. Finally, there is always the option for holy war: Christians can simply declare that they are conducting holy war against a Muslim neighbour with no justification beyond fighting heretics - though this tends to unite Muslim leaders against you and if often a very poor move.

There are more events, plots and decisions than you can shake a stick at. Throwing people in dungeons, hosting summer fairs, revoking titles, assassinations, anti-popes, crusades, rebellions, weddings - there are always many ways to go about achieving something; some are dirty, expensive and fast, others are slow, safe, free...it all depends on how you want to do it. You can promote vassals, either to your personal council or to greater holdings, which makes them more loyal to you. You can award honorary titles that do little more than flatter people, but can be useful for wooing them to your cause. There is an entire set of changeable laws and succession systems, all of which can have a huge impact on how your realm functions and how people regard you.

My 64-year old pimp of a King is about to have his ninth child by his second wife:

Help! Defend! Heal!

Sieges can be slow, but events can speed them up.

The game has a great sense of humour that comes out now and then.

Yes! Goons have recently started playing games with many players all at once. Different timezones are also being setup. These games end with rampant castration. Please see recent posts for info regarding on-going multiplayer game.

The most recent patch is 1.091. Please acquire it from your chosen video game dispensary. Or, if you bought a physical box like people used to do in the previous century, you can find it via google.

- CK2+ is a fantastic mod made by our very own Wiz. It features a large number of additions and improvements, most notable of which is the entirely new civil war system. Go read about it here. You can go clicky clicky here for the latest version. Here is the official pitch:

quote:

The purpose of CK2+ is to create a broader, deeper, more challenging and more balanced CK2 experience, without straying too far from the original game mechanics or tacking on deterministic railroading events and modifiers. The purpose of this mod is not historical accuracy (although I try to preserve it whenever it is not a major detriment to gameplay) but rather to embrace and enrich the medieval sandbox intrigue simulator that is CK2, while fixing its various little issues and exploits.

- The second major goon-made mod is Sengoku. It is set in 15th century Japan, based on the map from the terribly boring paradox game, and crammed into the much more exciting CK2 game. It also integrated CK2+.

- The Prince and the Thane makes a whole bunch of tweaks and adds new content.

- There is also a Game of loving Thrones mod! It is set during the time of Robert's rebellion and so does not spoil the story for those lamos still catching up with the rest of the literate world.

- This thing here is a random scenario making mod. It is, supposedly, compatible with most other mods.

- This mod is designed to improve performance. Paradox are pretty lazy coders when it comes to system resources.

- More of a technical fix than a mod, this is designed to force the game to use more than 2GB of RAM if you are having trouble with slow loading times. That thread is for a different engine but it works for CK2 too.

The four major content DLCs are The Sword of Islam (for Muslim rulers), The Republic (for, er, Republics) The Legacy of Rome (tons of stuff for the Byzantine Empire) and The Sunset Invasion. The latter involves the Aztecs invading Europe and is generally considered rather tongue-in-cheek. These can be purchased from your favourite video game dispensary. There are also other DLCs that add music and hats and poo poo.

Yes! I didn't play it but it lets you play through 20 years which is quite a bit of game play. Apparently saving and loading is disabled though.

Oh ok, CLICK HERE for an extensive Let's Play.
There is a different, ongoing Let's Play located HERE.

To better understand how inheritance and succession works, read this big-rear end wall of text: Click.

Yes, we have a wiki, right here!

Ideally PM me with important things for the OP. What do you mean you don't have platinum? Scrub.

It is pronounced GAVELKIND, not GRAVELKIND, you illiterate scum

As of patch 1.06 murder plots trigger randomly and automatically based on plot power, you cannot manually fire them yourself

If you get the perpetual tournament bug (leading to a spectacularly crippled and dead nobility) you should open console and type "event 70002" to end it.

Really you should just buy the game and DLCs on Steam during a sale for sheer simplicity. It patches automatically and DLCs install immediately once purchased

Finally: Yes, you can capture, torture and execute the Pope. There are also blindings, incest and castration. Welcome to The Medieval Sociopath Simulator!

I just started playing this a few days ago. I started in the very tip of north west Ireland and over a couple hundred years my line has ascended to be the Kings and Queens of France. It feels great to connive and fight your way to there from pretty much nothing.

I had a particularly spotty moment when I only had one daughter who ascended to be head of the family. She turned out to be the best ruler of the bunch and secure the Queenship (of Ireland) for herself. Tons of fun, and its best to not try to save and reload but just go with what happens.

Posting to say it's a fun game with friends, if you don't get stomped by muslims or norway a few years into the match

I got this with two other friends at the same time and we've had fun playing it together as 3 or other matches with just two of us. Although getting excommunicated by some bastard vassal is a huge bitch.

I love this game but lost all passion for it when a 40+ hour save file culminated in the united kingdoms of Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales and Jerusalem falling under the reign of a zealous Greek heretic. I couldn't stand the cultural anachronism of having brown people take over the UK 800 years early.

Any good starting positions that aren't in Ireland? I think I am ready to graduate from tutorial island.

I like stronghold kingdoms. I've really _really_ wanted to play this game since it came out but I have a traumatic brain injury from the army and struggle with cognitive and memory stuff.

Paradox games are always too complex. In fact every game by them I've ever bought I've stared in wonder, but never been able to understand/play it properly.

It's actually a sad predicament. So I haven't bought crusader kings 2 because Im worried it's just another waste of money on a game I only wish I could play.

Man, this is upsetting to read, I'm sincerely sorry for this. Have you considered keeping a notebook on hand while you play? Seems to me that might help, what with the relatively slow pace of the game, you'd have as much time as you liked to thumb through your notes.

I'm sorry if this comes across as patronizing or obvious but I find your quandary genuinely upsetting and it makes me feel like an ungrateful piece of poo poo who takes his life for granted. I really wish I could suggest more helpful things but I'm not that great at the game myself. All the best, man.

Paradox has been learning in recent years. This game isn't as complex as games like Hearts of Iron or even Victoria. Honestly the hardest part is wrapping your head around feudal politics.

I really like playing the duke of Slavonia in Croatia. He is a pretty cool lord, but you are also in a good spot to take Hungary once you take Croatia. I once in a terrible multiplayer game, took over Norway and England with Croatia . It's a bit of a challenge though.

Looks like someone didn't keep a close enough eye on the line of succession. You should have arranged a matrilineal marriage you fool!

I am having a hell of a lot of fun with a game that started in Northern Spain. I tried to absorb one of the other kingdoms but then everything went horribly wrong and they crushed me, with my king dying in the final battle. Luckily the king that slew me was heir to my throne so I then played as the man that killed me! His line then went on to systematically absorb all of the disparate Iberian nobility and then begin a reconquest of Spain from the dastardly Moors! That last part is really really hard. I'd have been completely hosed were it not for France being my brosefs for life (I consistently bred excellent financially adept Princesses and continuously wed them off to French Princes and Kings).

Also I didn't like Ireland that much in the end (even as an Irish person). Once you have the island its really drat hard to make any progress. I never had the forces to go toe-to-toe with Scotland or England, and while I managed to grab a few Welsh counties the English eventually took them back. I did manage to gain some land in Sweden bizarrely enough due to elaborate inheritance shenanigans involving a prince we brought over.

This really is one of those "hey stop taking poo poo for granted you jerk" things. Sorry for your brain damage dude. As said though, the game can be slowed right down to a crawl or paused altogether so you would have all the time in the world to stay on top of things. Using notes it might actually be a good way to help train yourself into better functionality. I know brain damage doesn't just go away but the brain is incredibly adaptable, you might be able to teach it new ways around the problems you have. "In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order"

Some good and challenging starting positions:

Duke of Barcelona: Strongest man in Aragon (Even stronger than the Aragonese King himself), right on the edge of the Christian world so you are going to be figthing muslims a lot. Great position to gain a Kingdom title once you grow.

Duke of Flanders: Brugge province is rich as gently caress. Enjoy having lots of money - if you play your strenghts. On the other hand you are Dutch so you have a malus to relationship with both Frankish and German people who just happen to be way stronger than you and surround your lands. There are many goals that you can set for yourself when you start as the Duke of Flanders. I like to try to gain the Kingdom of France and make France a mostly Dutch nation.

Kingdom of Poland: Good starting position, already have a Kingdom title so everything is easy for a starting Poland, right? Not exactly. When you start you have some strong duchies under you that may not be 100% loyal so Poland often begins with stability issues. Once you manage to hold your kingdom together and get a little bit stronger you are in a great position to expand because you are right next door to a lot of rich pagan provinces. Be warned, though, the Pagans can actually beat you on a war early on. You need to improve your land before rolling them.

Count of Naples: This one is fun (and kinda hard). You start as a Greek Orthodox surrounded by Italian (or Norman) Catholics that hate your guts. It's quite a challenging starting position because the powerful Duchy of Apulia is right next door to you and would love to acquire your land. I recommend swearing fealty to the Byzantine Emperor right away so he can hold your back while you develop your one province and wait for the opportunity to kick the Catholic yolk out of Italy.

Duke of Saxony: For getting some Holy Roman Empire politics goodie. You have a very strong starting position if you play your cards right because you have de jure claims on quite a bit of land and will be able to form other Duchy titles very early into the game. Once you do, you will be the biggest power on northern Germany. Can you use this strong position to gain the Empire? This is a very entertaining play through with quite a bit of warring if this is your thing (since you are close to pagans) but also a lot of diplomacy and marriage politics to try to gain the Empire.

Here's a few screenshots to show how a game of Crusader Kings might go. This was my first game of Crusader Kings 2, though I ought to mention that a lot of Crusader Kings 1 carries over and I played that game an obscene amount:

As is commonly suggested, a good place to start out is on Ireland, where you are relatively unthreatened by large neighbours and not opressed by a liege King who is going to give you poo poo from day 1. So I start out as the Count of Dublin.

As the count of Dublin, the Duke of Leinster is my father, so I inevitably inherit Leinster and am able to grow a little in size. You may notice that Harald won the Battle of Stamford Bridge and defeated William the Bastard at Hastings, uniting England and Norway and preventing the Norman Conquest.

Using my strength as a duke I press claims on the independent counts within my lands to consolidate my hold on the areas of Meath and Leinster, and then fabricate claims in the neighboring duchies of Connacht and Munster, allowing me to conquer them and declare myself King of Ireland. The remaining counts in Ulster soon recognise me as the rightful ruler of the Island and swear fealty without a fight. This takes up the lifetime of my starting character and his son. Meanwhile I am engaging in a little marriage politics overseas and managed to get my original character's son married to the Duchess of Thuringia-Franconia, and his son married to the Duchess of Aquitania. My original character's great-grandaughter will ultimately succeed to the throne of Ireland while also being duchess of Franconia, Thuringia, Aquitaine and Poitou.

That inheritance is easy to leverage against Scotland and France when their realms collapse in civil war, allowing my holdings on the continent and on the islands to expand. Near the end of her quarter-century reign, my Queen converts to Catharism, setting off a civil war in my realm where her death is followed by her mad and sociopathic son taking the throne, only to be assassinated in the night as his daughter takes the throne and Cathar Ireland swears off papacy and patriarchy forever.

The next target would be England, but it's become a huge clusterfuck. The crown of England has passed between Norway and Germany with rebels under both lieges occasionally rising up and even sometimes wresting the crown from one of the other. While I can take any of the independent rebels and probably Norway too, the German areas are no-gos for me, as war with Germany means the certain loss of Thuringia-Franconia, something I'm just not willing to risk. The conquest will be slow, but easy as long as I bide my time.

Eventually, the conquest is far enough complete that I can claim the thrones of England and Wales, and as Queen of Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales declare myself Empress of Britannia! At the time I played this game, I had a few mods installed, Tweaks and Wiz's CKMod, which added additional formable empires on top of Germany and Byzantium, and allowed for female courtiers, and I borrowed a flag idea from Wiz's LP. Wiz's CK mod became CKPlus, the mod mentioned by The Putty and it's the best.

Here's the world in 1266, 200 years after the game's start and about halfway through. I have passed out the Kingdom of Aquitania to a vassal on the continent, who through the unity my empire provides is able to fight the heretical catholics in France without having to worry about a stab in the back from a liege or rebellious vassals, so my holdings there grow without much direct intervention on my part. But with the Islands finally unified I can turn my attention outward, to the Iberian muslims in the south who are in disarray after the Emirate of Beja collapsed right at the cusp of uniting the whole penninsula, and to the Germans whose Holy Roman Empire is beginning at last to show some cracks after hundreds of years of relative unity (rebellious Englanders excluded).

60 years on in 1328, and there's been a lot of success. Northern Iberia has been taken, and the Germans who successfully rebelled against the weak German kings have been brought to heel, but while the Holy Roman Empire is no longer a credible threat, the newly emerged Empire of Maghreb puts a serious crimp upon my southern conquests.

1412 is not long before the end of the game, and within those 100 years a series of successful assassinations against the Maghrebi caliphs succeeded in igniting a power struggle within that Empire, allowing me to finally crack their hold on Iberia. With the Iberians defeated by entire attention turned East to the German and Italian remants of the Holy Roman Empire, and they too fell before me.

This was the point at which I declared the game a victory and started over as someone else.

The rulers of Ireland and Britannia, from 1066-1412.

So yeah, Crusader Kings 2 is pretty awesome. Start as a count, become an empress, best game!

The very start of the game puts you right before the Norman Conquest and you can play as Harold Godwinson, Last Anglosaxon King of England, Harald Hardrada king of Norway and claimant to the English throne, or William the Bastard, Duke of Normandy and Papally ainointed would-be conqueror of England. So there's the potential to shape the future of England in three directions right from the start--it's possibly also worth mentioning that if you were to play as Harald once you've conquered England nothing stops you from moving your capital to somewhere like York or London and making England your primary title (so you're King of England and Norway instead of King of Norway and England).

Alternatively, you can select the Norman Conquest bookmark and start the day after Hastings with William the Conqueror already on the throne.

I'm considering getting this game to play it with a Game of Thrones mod. Worth it or does another paradox game hold the claim for having the greatest GoT mod?

If you want the GOT mod, then CK2 is the game for you.

I was just playing it earlier, as Jon Connington of Griffin's Roost. Things diverged almost immediately, since during Robert's rebellion I killed Stannis Baratheon in battle and although Robert won the war and executed Aerys Targaryen, he took a debilitating headwound and Eddard Stark served as Regent for Robert's short, coma-ridden life. The younger Targaryens all escaped with their lives and I invited them to court at Griffin's Roost, marrying them into my family and eventually helping Rhaegar Targaryen reclaim Dragonstone as his own, although I couldn't muster the support to help him take the Iron Throne.

Robert died in his 30s and his younger brother Renly inherited (Robert and Lyanna had no children since Robert was incapable, and Lyanna died after falling into a depression even before her vegetative husband died). Renly - married to Margaery Tyrell, coincidentally - did actually manage to do his dynastic duty in spite of his homosexuality, and left a son to inherit the throne when he died.

I've played about 50 years of that game so things are almost completely unrelated to 'canon' now, but it's fun to note some things that happened - such as Brienne of Tarth winning about six tournaments until she died in her mid-30s (a natural death, apparently), or how Jaime Lannister joined the Night's Watch and died of old age as Commander of the Shadow Tower and First Ranger. With Jaime divested of his inheritance, Tyrion inherited Casterly Rock and the Westerlands, and was imprisoned and executed by King Renly for some plot or other.

Oh, and Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper, is currently ruler of Dorne.

basically, if you're looking for a Game of Thrones mod, play CK2.

Add a Walmart address or whatever. It doesn't have anything else region-blocking aside that simple verification.

The cops want to search the train

Gift cards may help with that as well.

Holy crap, you're right. I used Fake Name Generator and just activated the code on Steam. Perfect!

I've only finished the tutorial but I think this game might already be everything I ever wanted from a Civilzation game. It kind of annoys me how in such games you usually have to micromanage everything to be effective. I'm the supreme leader, I don't want to personally command every single army I've got and make sure the peons are working at maximum efficiency. I would hire people to do that job for me.

I just want to hang around in court, sleep my way to power, and become a cantankerous old man that makes his sons all court jesters and makes his daughter supreme leader.

I really enjoyed starting out as the Duke of Iceland. They drop you into the middle of some hilarious backwater icebilly intrigue, and the King of Norway doesn't bother you. I really didn't know what the gently caress I was doing, so I as soon as the Crusade popped up, I sent all of our ~300 brave Icelandic levies to capture Jerusalem. It ended in viking tears.

This is how the Duchess of Iceland thought it would turn out. This is what really happened.

My spymaster uncovered some weird rear end plot where a couple of my council members wanted to murder some random 11 year old courtier. I ignored it for a while and when I checked on it again, some random Hungarian princess who'd married someone in our family had joined in on it. 6 men + 1 Hungarian lady versus an 11 year old girl. Some Elizabeth Bathory poo poo going down in Iceland.

How does this compare to Europa Universalis? It looks to be the same developer and same general style. I liked the idea of Universalis but drifted away pretty quickly since everything felt a little too unwieldy and I didn't feel like I had that much freedom due to the other nation's trying to follow their actual historical actions.

How buggy and incomplete is the GoT mod? Does it have all of the fun of CoK2, but with GoT story bits mixed it?
