How does this chucklefuck explain away the making of a limited amount of currency? If you have a finite source of currency won't that just gently caress you over when the economy grows and becomes worth more CosbyCoins? Or will each CosbyCoin become ridiculously overvalued until no one can afford them and you have a crash?

Essentially, the goal is to run up as large as possible an electricity charge as possible on your parents, landlord's or employer's bill. You're probably using $10 of electricity to make $5, but since you aren't the one who pays it, that's $5 of pure profit! Don't even get started on the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining.

If I remember correctly, it takes something like 20,000 dollars worth of video cards to get your system up to the point that it can generate something like 5 bitcoins a day (remember the difficulty increases as more bitcoins get generated). And I think someone did the math a while back that bitcoins have to be worth at least 20 dollars a piece to outweigh the electricity usage. Also, cops will start investigating you for having a growhouse because your house is so loving hot.

Unlike evil fiat inflationary currencies that steal your money, deflationary currencies let you invest in the future just by stashing money in your (virtual) mattress. The best part is that Bitcoin isn't even backed by anything, so your silly "overvaluing" is impossible.

OldMemes posted:So, let me get this straight, you run a program to make bitcoins? And people run multiple overclocked computers just to generate bitcoins, which no have gold backing or economic value, and expect a return? :pysduck: Well, there's that statue called "The Objectivist", which is a reference to Atlas Shrugged. It's a major landmark on Wall Street, and objectivism seems to be the driving force behind a lot of the decisions made in the financial markets. Objectivism is really a philosophy for yourself, and she makes some interesting points about using reason as a basis for morality, rather than some sort of belief system. I think a lot of people misconstrue it as a reasoning for being absurdly selfish or self-serving, and general assholery. But I think almost any 20th-century philosophy could be considered in that manner. Would some find existentialism and nihilism to be grounds for doing anything, because nothing matters? I think a superficial understanding of these philosophies can certainly lead one to that sort of thought pattern.

Depending on your video card and how much you pay for electricity, mining is still profitable. Of course, it's "profitable" in the sense that you might earn a dollar a day for each video card you've got, so you're better off looking through street gutters for quarters.

Does anyone have that video of the very first Bitcoin Show where they didn't really know what they were doing, so it was like 2 minutes of the intro animation looping while you heard them shouting at each other from across the room because they had left their mics on? That pretty much summed up Bitcoins in one hilarious technical-difficulty filled clip.
