The Muse thread died a while back, and here's a brilliant excuse for a new one. AMAZING trailer for the new album, "The 2nd Law" (edit: thought it was an Asimov reference but it's actually the second law of thermodynamics): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqFZGnfMLMw Ahh so exciting. Some people are moaning that the song in the trailer is too 'dubsteppy' but I think it'll just be an intro or interlude or something, I doubt it's an actual track. This looks to be epic and I'm so glad having a baby with Kate Hudson hasn't softened Bellamy's conspiracy theories. marshmallard fucked around with this message at Jun 6, 2012 around 14:04 |

This just popped up on my Facebook. I am a metal fan, but there's just something about Muse that I love, and I have been buying their albums throughout the years and been to live shows. Very excited for this. They are one of those bands where one song just doesn't sound like another, with a great deal of range from all three of them. I think the dubstep thing is a troll and the orchestral stuff at the beginning sounds like a great intro to a song. Also, This still cracks me up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdrp0l2em-U. henpod fucked around with this message at Jun 6, 2012 around 13:34 |

The newscaster in the video sounds like shes talking about the second law of thermodynamics rather than Asimov. I really wouldnt be surprised if the dubstep thing was real, it sounds like Matt Bellamys widdle widdly oscilating guitar effect thing was mixed in there. The whole thing just seems incredibly silly for the topic its about though.

Yeah I don't really know what the gently caress I was expecting, I thought they'd reached peak ridiculousness when United States of Eurasia broke down to a Chopin piece with samples of bombs falling in the the background. I still wasn't ready for UNSUSTAINABLLLE *dubstep drop* though.

I'm a big fan of death metal stuff but Muse really does it for me. I thought the 3 part Exogenesis thing was one of the coolest songs Matt Bellamy has written in awhile, and the intro was similar so this was pretty exciting. But then there was the dubstep. Why, drat it? It seems every corner I turn, dubstep is waiting, beep booping in my face like some sort of R2D2 seizure. Then again, Matt has always been loving around with his guitar, so this doesn't seem all that strange of an extension. Also, screw you for mixing up the thermodynamics and Asimov thing. I was so excited for some robot space rock. Trees and Squids fucked around with this message at Jun 6, 2012 around 14:29 |

But there's a pretty prominent robot in the trailer, so I think there are still lots of robot things to look forward to. The robot with a face in the trailer totally reminds me of Edgar the crazy computer from Electric Dreams.

What a hilariously awful trailer/song. It is a disastrous pileup of sophomoric, faux-grandiose "political" bullshit. The angry computer makes me laugh out loud. It's like the intro to GamesMaster or something.

No no, back when I couldn't understand the words Bellamy was saying (and was 14) the music was deep. Now it's just silly and totally not cool. I can't wait for them to go on tour again, even if this album is terrible half the concert will be the old singles. edit: Not to mention even some of their crappy songs are cool live since they're not overproduced.

I tend to always ignore all Muse lyrics because they are always terrible/embarrassing. The gold lies in the music.

This seems to have been more eloquently stated in the commercial than I'd heard in the songs! But yeah, I'm hoping the dubstep is really just satire of dubstep considering the prior newscaster speech, ie relating club culture, technological atrophy, ect.

Gotta admit, that song sounds pretty awful so far, although it's not totally unlike the extended outro they do for stockholm syndrome like the version on HAARP, so I have faith that the rest of it might sound pretty awesome. Infact, if they got rid of the robot saying "unsustainable" it might actually sound like Muse playing instruments instead of generic dubstep

I really liked Muse up until their last album. I listened to it only a few times, thinking it was really great at first, and then eventually just forgetting about it. I'm not going to bother listening to anything off this until it's released, as I don't really have high hopes for it.

As another metal fan who makes an exception for Muse, seeing this thread got my blood flowing, but yeah, the video is making me fret. It starts out with a solid Ok Computer sort of vibe then goes to all hell. Really, Bellamy, are you just going to cave in and sound like all these trashy boring USA "dubstep" artists? Especially as a Brit, you should know better... Here's hoping they don't forget their roots. I want a new Absolution.

This seems to have been more eloquently stated in the commercial than I'd heard in the songs! What are you disagreeing with? Matt Bellamy is a broadly terrible lyricist, but on Absolution (where this sort of thing started) he at least managed to produce lines along these themes that were immediate and punchy in their simplicity: "best! you've got to be the best!" or "this is the end! the end of the world!" Hardly subtle or nuanced, but they inspire an instant visceral response and a clear hook. Like Muse's music. When it doesn't suck. But by Resistance you had seriously lame lines like "you'll wake the thought police" or "flick a switch and open your third eye / you'd realise we should never be afraid to die" that try way too loving hard to discuss real issues in completely vague, cliched language. When Muse call for an "uprising", you have no idea what they're asking of us. "We will be victorious!" in what, exactly? What do these songs mean? Now we have Muse apparently tackling the economic crisis. God help us. quote:But yeah, I'm hoping the dubstep is really just satire of dubstep considering the prior newscaster speech, ie relating club culture, technological atrophy, ect. It isn't. Popcorn posted:"I want a new <previous album I liked>" has never, ever been ended well. Touche. But I'm worried Muse may have completely lost their way here. Hell, maybe they just need to listen to Absolution or Origin of Symmetry once each to remember what they're about. I'm all for artistic growth and experimentation, but Bellamy has me pretty nervous.

He talked about how he read Confessions of an Economic Hitman, then decided to write a song about how we should all rise up against corporations. While Muse are signed to a massive corporation. The bigger problem was he didn't have any understanding of what he was talking about. I can't help thinking if someone got him to read a pro-fascist book he'd write a song about how fascism is awesome. I also heard him spout some ridiculous stuff about space, something like: "Oh yeah well humanity is going to die in 400 million years when the Sun explodes." I used to like Muse, but it's impossible to listen to them after you notice Matt gasping every time he breathes.

I've always thought his frantic/desperate-sounding vocal style has gelled well with the recurring themes of paranoia/world government in his lyrics; I'm always surprised when I hear people not getting into it. When Thoughts of a Dying Atheist is chugging along at 179 BPM like a train gone mad off the rails, I can't imagine a more fitting voice than Bellamy's gasping yowl.
