What is always so bad about SR's driving? I feel it's just... there. It's not bad, you can control your car with no problem... and it's it. It's just there and super simple. True Crime New York has bad driving (And I like that game), Just Cause 1 from what I remember has bad driving. Saints Row is just eh.

Saints Row's driving is setup so that you can do flawless slides around every corner and weave all over the place. Some people don't like that. They're bad people, we don't talk to them.

Do you get bonuses for using the lethal/awesome/brutal takedowns on the last few goons or are the hazards simply there for flourish. I have a thing where if I can I'll always try and end a fight on a high note. In this instance it's shoving someone's eye into a crane hook. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxkr4wS7XqY

Everything should have that "thing", including developers. In the past, especially with boss fights, you'd often finish someone off with an otherwise unspectacular weak attack, or the 2nd hit of a 6-move combo that leaves you flailing while the boss' corpse is already cooling. They countered this by having cutscenes and QTEs finish off bosses in spectacular ways but of course these were far less fun and engaging so they basically went too far in the opposite direction. If players had more options to do what you're talking about, ending off fights with flourishes when we decide, games would be a lot more fun, boss fights even more so.

There are some boxing/MMA/wrestling games that work this way, but I can't think of any more actiony games that have done it.

Totally! I've posted a couple times over the years on the topic and every time I use the example of old SNES wrestling games. It's such a great system that could find amazing application outside of sports games. Essentially infinite health but only in the context of a momentum or tug-of-war health bar, and an emphasis on finishing moves. Honestly, there are lots of mechanics from sports games that should migrate out to different genres.

Playstation All Stars' main game mode works that way. Your attacks just build up your special meter, and a special instantly kills anyone it hits.

"Def Jam: Fight for New York" had something kind of similar, in that it was very hard to finish someone off with just regular punches and kicks. To KO someone, you pretty much had to use a Blazing Finisher, a weapon, an environmental object or a particular move specific to the style you practiced. Fights against the AI had to finish on a high note. Fights against other players could become cat and mouse affairs, trying to go for the kill without leaving yourself open to getting slammed face first into a wall or getting a bottle busted over your head. Man, that was a great game.

Dissida: Final Fantasy actually has a mechanic like this. You have one set of moves that weaken an opponent and collect "Brave" and another that does damage based on how much of the previous moves you used, which spends your Brave and requires you to weaken the enemy again after doing damage.

Sindai posted:The best way to encourage this is a system where the more you beat dudes up, the more vulnerable they become to knockouts, but you still need to land a powerful move to actually knock them out. Almost all of Technos' beat'em ups (Double Dragon/Battletoads/RCR/etc.) do this. You have to either hit a character with an attack that knocks down or hit them with an attack while they're already reeling from a weaker attack. That's actually why the parts where you fight two Abobos or two Chins at once in Double Dragon 1 are the most intense. The former's attacks both knock you down in one hit AND do heavy damage so you have to be conservative. The latter can do a counter on your kick attacks (instant knockdown+damage) and also crouch to avoid your jump kick (can't play conservatively) so you have to get up close and keep the pressure up forever. I got to play Sleeping Dogs for a short bit. The atmosphere and general feel of everything is Nineties Asian Crime Movie: The Game. combat actually immediately reminded me of older beat'em ups. You can't fluidly switch target like in Arkham City (I mean you CAN but the range you'll move is much shorter) but like in Double Dragon itself and in Yakuza you can throw people around/away/into stuff to get them out of your hair for a while. The combat in general feels like sort of a middle point between Yakuza and Arkham City. You get a counter button though and this mechanic works EXACTLY like in the Arkham games. At the same time while it's a bit more sluggish than Arkham, even the regular attacks feel nice and satisfying and right from the get go there's a good mix of enemies that block, enemies that can counter your grappling, etc. Not a lot of new information sorry, but if it means anything I'm now buying this first thing Tuesday morning. I've got it pre-ordered and will pick it up on Tuesday. The question is, do I take Tuesday or Wednesday off from work to play it? I'm trying to keep my expectations reasonable, to avoid potential disappointment. But every time I see some footage of "Sleeping Dogs", it's like I'm a teenager again, seeing "Police Story" on VHS for the first time. I haven't been this excited about a game in a while.

I cant think of a single finishing move/heavy takedown/environmental attack that didn't feel brutal and game ending in any way. (Apart from the submissions, I guess) the sound design and direction were brilliant. Then we got ICON.

Yeah, a 20 hour game sounds like something I can actually finish. Maybe even start a new save and play through again at some future date. We had a movie night in anticipation of "Sleeping Dogs". We watched "Police Story" starring Jackie Chan and "Invisible Target" starring Jaycee Chan. Very different movies, but a lot of broken glass in both. What are some other "Cops in Hong Kong" movies I could watch while waiting for Tuesday?

Yeah, Hard Boiled and the Infernal Affairs trilogy are all good watches, especially before Sleeping Dogs. If you'd like more Hong Kong flavor in general, Wong Kar-wai is your man. You won't find over-the-top action, but Chungking Express is a giant love letter to the setting.
