"What do we say to people who talk about the books?"

"Not today."

READ THE SECTION ABOUT SPOILERS AND BOOK TALK.
Any questions about future books can be sent by PM to Toast Museum and Revenant Threshold. They know their stuff.

On Spoilers, Book Talk and Threadshitting

  • Please do not post spoilers either explicitly, under tags, disguised as speculation or as questions leading non-readers down paths of speculation.
  • If you are not sure whether what you're about to post is a spoiler or not, err on the side of caution. Remember, you don't get to decide what is and isn't a spoiler.
  • Please run all GoT related youtube videos through Polsy to hide comments.
  • If spoilers are posted, the thread will be closed until they have been removed.
  • As per normal TV IV rules, casting information is not a spoiler. However, any information regarding characters beyond their names is a spoiler. Discussing an actor's suitability for a role is best taken to the spoiler thread.
  • Confirming the return of characters from season 1 is a spoiler and should not be mentioned in this thread
  • A Clash of Kings is now open for discussion! (MOSTLY, see below) All future books remain off-limits
  • If someone has an issue with the show, please do not respond 'that's cause it was the same way in the books'. It doesn't matter, it doesn't change the person's issue.
  • Please don't join in speculation if you've read the books, even if it's just to debunk theories you know are wrong. Let the newbies have their fun. And for all you know, the show's version of the story might go that way!
  • Show-only posters, you can help with this. Please don't ask questions about future events or book-specific information.
  • If your SA name is not Rarity (I'm an idiot an got myself autobanned, tweet me @rarity_sa instead), Sophia or EvilMoJoJoJo, please don't report posts. Instead, PM one of us three to take care of it. Hopefully this way we can avoid burying Aatrek in an avalanche of identical reports and he'll like us more
  • If you see a post containing spoilers/book talk, please don't post in response to it. You're just making things worse. Just PM and move on.
  • If someone posts spoilers shortly after one of your posts, please be considerate and edit in a warning for newbies to leave the thread.
  • Please do not post circlejerky in-jokes from the Bad Thread
  • All of these things can be summed up quite simply: please use some common sense.

Now that we've got that out of the way, let's move to the good stuff.

Newbie FAQ

Hold on, what's all this then?

Game of Thrones is HBO's critically-acclaimed epic fantasy series based on George RR Martin's hit books A Song of Ice and Fire. Set in the world of Westeros, the story tells of the struggles between the major Houses of Westeros as they compete for the Iron Throne. Despite being part of the fantasy genre the series remains very grounded, predominantly acting as a character-based drama focusing on the political intrigue between the players of the game.

What are these books you talk about?

The first entry in the series, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996. Since then, four more parts of the series have been released with longer periods between each entry (something many fans are increasingly bitter about). Each entry has received high critical acclaim and Martin is now a No.1 NY Times Bestseller. Two more books are planned for the series, although release dates are currently unknown.

Oh great, I love these books. There's this really cool theory about-

OH GOD NO WHAT ARE YOU DOING STOP

What is Westeros?

Westeros is the main continent on which the story takes place, although there is another continent across the sea named Essos. Westeros is divided among the major houses into the following regions: the North, the Riverlands, the Vale, the Iron Islands, the Westerlands, the Reach, the Stormlands and Dorne. In the north of the continent lies the Wall, a massive block of ice dividing the North from the frozen wildling-inhabited wastelands that exist beyond. The world of Westeros has a mysterious climate where seasons last for years at a time. There is now physiological explanation for this.

Who are the major Houses?

  • House Stark (the North) sits in Winterfell. They are a tough family used to extreme cold and hard living and they are closely bound to duty and honour. House Words: Winter is Coming.
  • House Baratheon (the Stormlands) currently has control of the Iron Throne, although the King has gone to seed in his latter years. With the King taking residence in the capital, his brothers hold the ancestral seat of Storm's End and the island of Dragonstone. House Words: Ours is the Fury.
  • House Lannister (the Westerlands) holds Casterley Rock and is the wealthiest of the major Houses. Having married into the royal line, they have a heavy presence in the court. House Words: Hear Me Roar.
  • House Targaryen was the previous ruling family until routed by rebellion 17 years past. The house is now represented by its only two surviving members who live in exile in Essos. House Words: Fire and Blood.

Any other important factions in play?

The Night's Watch are a sworn order of men that guard the Wall from the dangers that lie in the frozen wastes belong. Once a major force in Westeros, they have fallen into hard times as the perceived threat decreased in the eyes of the Southern nobles. The Dothraki are a nomadic tribe located in Essos, known their experience with horses and their vicious raids on the people of the continent.

What's the cast like? Phenomenal. The cast includes Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings, Goldeneye), Lena Headey (The Sarah Connor Chronicles, 300), Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent, The Chronicles of Narnia) who won an Emmy for his role as Tyrion Lannister, Mark Addy (The Full Monty), Charles Dance (Bleak House), Harry Lloyd (Robin Hood, Doctor Who) and Aiden Gillen (the Wire). And that's only the cast members with previous work. Prepare for the likes of Maisie Williams, Jack Gleeson and Alfie Allen to become household names.

Ok, so how can I get started on this show? All previous episodes are available for viewing on HBOGo and On Demand services. Season 1 is currently available on DVD worldwide, the Season 2 DVD is expected to hit stores in Spring 2013.

And when will Season 3 start?

March 31st, 2013! Hurray!

Oh my god, I love this show, when is it gonna get cancelled aaaaaaaa?

Ok, calm down. The critics love it, it is HBO's 2nd highest rated show after True Blood, it's not getting cancelled.

A Clash of Kings ~ Adaptation Chat

King's Landing: There are minimal changes in King's Landing, Tyrion's story is essentially a straight adaptation. Sansa's relationship with the Hound is explored further and an entire subplot involving Dontos promising to help Sansa escape was cut (9 weeks in the OP for nothing! NOTHING!). Shae spends most of the book living in a manse away from the castle before taking on the role of handmaiden to Lollys Stokeworth, a minor character cut from the series. Bronn's role is minimalised to Tyrion's bodyguard, with the City Watch being commanded by Ser Jacelyn Bywater, a minor character who dies at the Blackwater. When Ros was mistaken as Tyrion's whore, she was replacing a minor character called Alayaya who helped hide Tyrion's visits to Shae's manse.

The Blackwater: While the key structure of the battle remains, there are some minor changes. Tyrion's wildfire plan instead works as follows: once Stannis's fleet enters the bay a giant chain raises behind them to trap the fleet within, before catapults hurl wildfire directly into the ships. Joffrey spends most of the battle shooting people with his crossbow and hurling traitors from trebuchets before being forcibly retreated by Cersei. Stannis spends the battle in a tent far from the frontlines.

Robb/Tallisa: Robb does not appear on-screen for almost the entire book, although his victory over Stafford Lannister is heavily referenced. Tallisa as a character doesn't even exist, instead Robb has an off-screen romance with Jeyne Westerling from the Crag, which received a name check on the show. Their marriage is only revealed at the start of the third book, although the events occur during the second.

Jaime: Jaime only appears in one chapter of the book, during which Catelyn interrogates him (as seen in the season 1 finale) and then releases him. His adventures with Brienne from the end of the season are taken from the start of his story arc in the third book. Alton Lannister replaces Cleos Frey, a change made to make his allegiances clearer (in the book there are Freys on both side of the Stark-Lannister conflict), and he survives to accompany Jaime and Brienne on the journey south until he is killed by Robb's forces.

Arya: There is even more misery and bleakness in Arya's arc in the books. Her interaction with Tywin in Harrenhal is non-existent. Instead, she spends her time as a servant working under a cruel boss named Weese. Her first two names in the book are Chiswyck, a Lannister soldier, and Weese while the Tickler survives to reappear at a later time. The naming of Jaqen H'ghar remains although Arya uses the trick for a different purpose that has yet to occur on the show. The escape from Harrenhal then acts as the culmination of Arya's arc and she achieves it with no aid from Jaqen.

Theon: While Theon's storyline is relatively accurate, his emotional issues and motivations have been made more explicit in the show. The fake murder of Bran and Rickon is a lot less obvious while the events involving the razing of Winterfell are displayed in full. Ramsay Snow, the Bastard of Bolton, did appear as part of the story but was pushed back to season 3 to help limit the number of new characters this year.

Bran: Bran remains as irrelevant in the books as he is in the show. His dreams are expanded upon slightly, and after being “killed” by Theon his survival isn't revealed until the end of the book. News of Bran and Rickon's death does make it beyond Winterfell and is the driving force behind Catelyn's decision to release Jaime.

Beyond the Wall: The ranging of the Night's Watch involves a lot more filler material. The events at Craster's Keep are limited to Sam's desire to save Gilly. The discovery of the dragonglass daggers is made by Jon rather than Sam. Instead of being totally incompetent, in the book Qhorin tasks Jon with executing Ygritte to find out what kind of man he is, and instead Jon sets her free before rejoining the other scouts. They are later discovered by wildlings and only captured after a prolonged chase, at which point Qhorin instructs Jon to turn his cloak. When Jon asks to join the wildlings, he is forced to defeat Qhorin in combat to prove his loyalty. The White Walkers march on the Fist of the First Men is taken from the prologue of the third book.

Qarth: Hey, you know how everyone was complaining how Dany's plotline was boring and nothing happened? Well guess what? In the books IT'S EVEN WORSE. Dany wanders the Red Waste for a while, then when she arrives in Qarth she just chills in Ducksauce's mansion spurning his marriage proposals. Then she visits the House of the Undying because she feels like it and burns it down because why the hell not? The visions in the House of the Undying involving far more foreshadowing and prophecy than what appeared in the show.

Renly and the Shadow Baby: The use of the shadow baby in the show was actually two events conflated together. The first time we become aware of the shadow baby is the moment it kills Renly. In the aftermath, Loras blames Brienne for his lover's death rather than Stannis. It is only later, during a siege of Storm's End, where we see Melisandre give birth to a shadow baby and truly understand the cause of Renly's death. This shadow baby is deployed Ser Cortnay Penrose, an awesome yet minor character that was cut from the series.

Stannis: Stannis appears far less in the book than he does in the show as he is not a POV character in his own right. In particular, all of his one-on-one scenes with Melisandre were invented for the show.

Margaery: In the second book, Margaery is essentially non-existent. She appears very briefly during a feast held at Renly's camp and has all of one line.

Yara: Renamed from Asha to avoid confusion with Osha.

Ros: WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? :gonk:

The Thronies: Season 2 Awards

The Old Salty Trophy for Services in the Field of Giving No Fucks

This award was originally intended for none other than Old Salty himself, however he gives no fucks for awards so didn't come to the award ceremony. In his stead, we present this trophy to Stannis Baratheon for calmly sentencing hundreds thousands to death with his assault on King's Landing. Where many lesser men named Robb Stark would have balked at such a reckless waste of human life, Stannis knows that their duty was to die for their true king. Stannis, for your cold pragmatism, we salute you.

The Theon Greyjoy Lifetime Achievement Award for Worst Theon Greyjoy Decision

Oh, Theon. Theon, Theon, Theon. Like a leftover firework from 4th July you shone brightly yet briefly before fizzing out while being pissed on by a hungover redneck. You made many, many terrible decisions this year and an honourable mention must go to your choice of fingerbanging your own sister. However, that merely results in years of personal therapy which is nothing compared to the fallout from beheading Rodrik. Before then, you could have easily pulled back from the destructive path you were heading on, but with that one move you ensured the North would never forgive you and were locked into a path that would only lead to further damage to all involved.

The E/N Order of Merit for Biggest Goon

At first glance, the winner of this award would obviously be the chubby sperglord known as Sam Tarly. However, unlike all other chubby sperglords known to man Sam has actually spent the last few months outside his father's basement and is thus disqualified. Instead this award goes to the eternal mouthbreather, Jon Snow, for falling apart the second he receives the affections of a woman. Any well adjusted human being would have been rolling around under the furs in no time, instead Jon froze up faster than the ice surrounding him, proving once and for all that he doesn't know where to put it.

The Creepiest Moment Medallion

This award goes to Pyat Pree killing the Thirteen for his winning combination of chapped lips, bad skincare, unnatural accent and googly eyes. And let's not forget he has the ability to make copies of himself so all of these features appear multiple times.

The “I Warned You Not To Trust Me” Award for Smuggest Dick

In a show filled with smug dicks one man stood head and shoulders above the rest. Only one man captured the perfect blend of arrogance, patronising and superiority. When we told him he was winning this award he said “You call this recognition an award but is there any physical object of value of which I am gaining? I think not.” Here's to you, Spice King, your poo poo-eating smile will live in infamy.

The Award for Cutiewutiest Baby

We were planning on presenting this award to the Shadow Baby until it turned out we only came to that result when it threatened to kill half the judging panel. Instead, the winner is Drogon! Who's a cute little fire breathing bringer of death? Why it's you! Yes you are! Yes you are!

The “Urk- Where Did My Tongue Go?” Award for Best Death

It is said that when you play the game of thrones you win or you die. Judging by this season, nobody ever wins. Yes, there were many deaths but this category had a run away winner. For taking a bunch of enemies down with him, for sacrificing his life to save a bunch of kids and criminals, for finding the time to quip with an arrow sticking out of his chest, Yoren has fully earned this one last victory.

The “Do You Lie Awake At Night Fearing My Gash?” Prize for Best Feud

With last year's winners spending zero time on screen together, there was an opportunity for a new contender to take the crown. And rising up to meet this opportunity was none other than the epic showdown between Rickon Stark and walnuts. When winter has come and gone, when the War of Five Kings has long since passed, when Daenerys returns to Westeros, Rickon will still be bashing walnuts into tiny little pieces. I'm sure they had it coming.

The “How Can Hate Hold A Kingdom Together For 17 Years?” Award for Best Additional Scene

Season 2 showed a lot more deviation from the source material than the first season. Whether these changes were good or bad have been debated endlessly in the spoiler thread. However, on one thing we were all agreed, giving Tywin and Arya multiple scenes together was an inspired decision that allowed two crafted actors the chance to play off each other superbly. Arya's ice cold threat to Tywin was a highlight only matched by Tywin's growing fondness for a supposed enemy that was just too intelligent to dislike.

Ooooo deary me,
My little brother's in Winterfell having fun,
I tell him that he's gonna lose so he should cut and run
But he can't be bothered cos he is his father's son.

I ask him very nicely if he'd like a flask of mead,
But all he wants to do is prove just how strong is his seed,
He can't understand that he don't know how to lead,
My baby brother Theon you never listen when I plead.

Oooooo I only say it cos I care,
So please can you just grow a pair.
Now, now there's no need to swear,
Please don't despair my dear mon frere.

Ooooo Theon get up it's a brand new day,
The cripple and the wildling have gotten away
You need to hunt them down because your men are gonna say.
“He's such a loving loser and he's gonna end up flayed.”

Surely there's some orphans out there you can go and burn,
I'm feeling guilty cause I can never make you learn,
Now how the hell do you expect for me to be concerned
When all you do is gently caress up every time that it's your turn

Oooooo I only say it cos I care,
So please can you just grow a pair.
Now, now there's no need to swear,
Please don't despair my dear mon frere.

Oh little brother do you have to be so thick,
I'm trying to help you out so can you stop being a dick.
It's time that you and I sat down and dealt with all your poo poo,
And for gently caress sake come on you gotta stop rubbing my clit.

Oooooo I only say it cos I care,
So please can you just grow a pair.
Now, now there's no need to swear,
Please don't despair my dear mon frere.

The GBS Award for Worst Threadshit

While we would like to remember these last ten weeks for being a joyous time where fun was had by all, it is impossible to deny that the GoT threads remain a scummy cesspit of horror (especially on Thursdays). When the threadshits (of which there were many) were bad, they were very very bad. But no threadshit combined the goonmind's spergy need for detail, a skeevy attention to sex and a sheer refusal to die out quite like the discussion about just what type of abuse Joffrey put the prostitutes through. Did we really need to know? No. Oh Gods, no.

Nitpicking; it's "razing" rather than "raising". Theon wasn't making a souffle. And if he had, no doubt it would've fallen flat immediately, the kitchen would catch fire, and he would elect not to phone the fire brigade in favour of attempting to piss it out.

Edit: Way beaten.

Re: Rarity on Qarth

The show was much worse here because they dragged Dany's story out and made her more unlikable, constantly screaming and threatening people all the time. Those two things are what made her story the worst on the show. Would you believe, non-book readers, that she doesn't yell even once during the book?

Jaqen H'ghar is probably the best Team Fortress 2 player ever.

But it makes up for it with a lot more Hot Pie interaction!

Knowing GURM, Hot Pie is a euphemism for something else.

Edit: Also, "Hot Pie interaction" sounds so dirty.

Re: Rarity on Qarth

The show was much worse here because they dragged Dany's story out and made her more unlikable, constantly screaming and threatening people all the time. Those two things are what made her story the worst on the show. Would you believe, non-book readers, that she doesn't yell even once during the book?

How on earth could you prefer book Qarth? Dany has no agency, and spends her time going from meeting to meeting like someone on a business trip.

House of the Undying, mostly. The show version had some interesting elements, but it's no contest for me.

Also, Quaithe's scenes are pretty different.

I preferred the book House of the Undying (and the last chapter), but I'm obviously not going to say why.

The rest of Qarth didn't do much for me, in the book or the show.

Anyone know if the next season's budget is going to be increased significantly?

I prefer her going around begging for ships and getting rejected than her going around demanding ships with fire and blood. The former makes me feel sorry for her, the latter just makes me hate her and makes it impossible for me to care about anything she's doing. And the house of the undying scene in the show can't even hope to compare to the book version.

wow, what a lovely book

Nah, I honestly preferred that Arya and Tywin didn't interact, because her becoming his cupbearer strained credulity. That said, I'm really glad they did just throw all that to the wind because they're awesome together.

It's way shorter.

Since my reason isn't a spoiler, I will say why. The book HotU is a lot more surreal. Every new vision is crazier than the last.

Almost certainly not. It's already the most expensive show on television.

I'm not sure it could be pulled off in a TV show, or at least one not directed by David Lynch. TV is a very literal medium.

yoink!

Spice King was awesome commentary on Dany's entire storyline in the series this far and I'm glad he was put in the show. Who the gently caress does she think she is besides DAENERYS STORMBORN and what makes her think, living on the other side of the world, that people might take up banners for her? She has no strength besides the dragons and is on the biggest power trip ever, which is hosed up because she actually knows, quite literally, nothing. All her knowledge and opinions comes from what other people are telling her, which isn't necessarily true.

End dany rant.

But her book scenes at the House of the Undying are amazing and, while I understand why they shortened that, still wished we got some more of the trippy poo poo. Door on the right!

She's a whipping boy character similar to Theon.

Sort of expect being born into the right family to make up for a lack of experience.
