Canuckistan posted:Yay FreddieW for making the list. That was a fun video. I love how YouTube has come to a point where talented people (often amateurs, hobbyists or students) not only produce amazing content for our entertainment (for free!), has often become lucrative enough for those people to make a living off of it, sometimes traveling around the world for their videos, but has also created a culture of cooperation and collaboration to such an extent. I've been following FreddieW's work since he started getting posted in this thread (and someone bought him an awesome avatar) and through his videos I discovered other amazing channels. (CorridorDigital, for example, who also perform in that video.) Then there's other videos I've found independently, such as this awesome channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B36Lr0Unp4 Who I later discover is the boyfriend of this amazingly talented woman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp63nbOfxgs Who worked with FreddieW on their latest video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXmMQJMFL_I There's amazing productions like Video Game High School, where all these internet celebrities work together to create an awesome product. There's cameos all over the place, actual Hollywood celebrities of name and fame participating (in 5 Second Films, for example) and it's all happening because they love what they do. They have the opportunity to develop their talents to their fullest potential, and we, the fans, get to be entertained and amazed at no cost at all, for hours every day if we choose to. Literally everybody wins, hell, there's too much for any one person to watch everything. It's amazing how far technology has come. How talented people can take an affordable laptop and camera and create content that rivals, and often surpasses, creations by professionals who have access to unbelievable amounts of money. The work of amateurs today can be just as good as a Hollywood blockbuster only years ago. I want to spend a day being catapulted like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShFAeNdiEiA Or travel over water like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im1iNq02Kz0 Or travel over the roads like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRD8AUg2ApE Someday I will. McCloud24 posted:And apparently his commitment to it, along with the close proximity in premise to Prometheus, killed his adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness, which is a good thing, in my mind. The beauty of Lovecraft lies in the fact that you have to completely imagine what's happening, because even the ways things are described aren't really sufficient to do it for you. Putting it to film seems like a huge mistake to me, so I'm glad this movie killed that. I haven't read At the Mountains of Madness, but a while back I realised that the one truly new thing the development of 3D cinema could add to the experience was a semi-accurate portrayal of the geometric madness the Cthulhu stories evoke.

Brother Jonathan posted:Exactly. The difference between daylight and starlight is about 20 f-stops, and cameras only have a dynamic range of about 6. That is why stars aren't visible in real video footage of the ISS. But in Hollywood movies they stick them in, supposedly so that the audience of mouth-breathers knows that it is set in space. Do you also complain about the actors not being aware of the filming crew, or seemingly oblivious to the soundtrack that seems to be playing over their lives? Maybe this is more up your alley? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVLFeEY03Tw

I'm going to make an effort to watch the rest. Good personality from the host. His brother also has a series on Biology, Ecology and is now working through Chemistry. I have a feeling they'll cover Physics next, but that's just a guess. Their other channel, SciShow, is also well worth subscribing to. ZeroDays posted:That cyclist guy has a channel full of perceived road transgressions and reaches almost preternatural levels of obnoxiousness in some of them. Take this one as an example, where a BMW doesn't respect his space: Give them at least as much as a car, hahaha. Yeah, except that he had a bicycle lane and could've easily kept 20 or so centimeters more towards the curb, giving both him and the car plenty of space. What a dick. I mean, I'm Dutch, so pretty much a cyclist by nature and I understand that cyclists in the UK and especially the US are generally treated unfairly, but there's no need to be a dick about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O99sS6K7RU This is the trailer for an upcoming Dutch documentary about the Oostvaardersplassen, a nature reserve only 5 kilometers from my house. It's beautiful, and I pass by it by train three or four times a week. Especially around dawn and sunset, in the twilight, the resemblance with Africa is uncanny: You really wouldn't expect a piece of nature like this (you can even go on safaris!) in the Netherlands, much less in a place which we've only claimed in the 1960s: The big island in the center of the map of Holland, where it's located, wasn't there in the 50s. It's entirely artificial, both the land and park, but in my opinion, no less beautiful because of it. In fact, I'd go as far and say it's a good example of how society and nature can come to terms with each other. It's not without its problems, though, because every winter, due to a lack of natural predators, there's an excess of animals and a lack of food. Many animals have to be put down, either pre-emptively or to put them out of their misery, but solutions are being investigated and discussed, most notably the introduction of wolves and eagles to bring a better balance. I hope it works out, because it really is a beautiful, beautiful place.
