I don't know what that means, so sure, why not. I'll go with SEM, since acronyms are cool.

SEM = scanning electron microscope.

Yeah, it's SEM. First and foremost, that characteristic grainy greyscale. Second, it's on a motorized stage. But most telling, when there's dust on the sample, you can see a darkening or sort of shadow-effect around the piece of dust. That pretty much nails it.

That is pretty loving funny ... I can't believe people eat these, why would you want to eat a fetid piece of decay

I'm not sure about the first kind (I think I've had something similar but those yolks are yellow and all they are is really salty), but the second is delicious. If any of you are ever tempted to try this these:

For both of these, you can usually find a hollow space in the egg where the air sac is. Crack the egg there. For the first kind, just expand that opening and spoon it out with a teaspoon. Since I usually have one with congee, I don't bother getting a plate or anything, and just set the egg on the table. It's its own bowl, so to speak. For the second kind (century egg), you want to peel the whole thing. It peels quite easily. Then cut it into quarters, length-wise. You can eat it plain or, as my family as always done, dipped in Chinese black vinegar and chopped fresh ginger. No guarantees on tastiness if you substitute other types of vinegar :P

Here's something from Japan, possibly my favorite bit of sushi, uni - aka, sea urchin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD4zfopXAHY

Man, I want to work in that office, yummmmm.

edit: In honor of the century egg, I had this with dinner (it's vinegar)

But what you linked is less "magic" and more a really (really really) well practiced and choreographed routine with quick and mostly clean hand movements. I mean, there's no question about how he did any of his tricks (palming, etc), but still really good because it's well done.

You'll be interested to know that modern day Japanese people wear that kind of clothing not at all uncommonly, depending on the occasion, and no one considers it dressing up as an Edo-era townsperson.

It's not blatantly racist. Making a comparison to saying a black person wants a watermelon-and-fried-chicken break is a red herring because those particular stereotypes have strong and clearly defined racist origins. It's not in good taste, certainly, but don't try to pretend like saying a Japanese person wants a sushi break is the same as saying a black person wants a watermelon break.

Picnic Princess posted:

Watching this and other tsunami videos just tears me up, because I was just in Thailand to study the long-term effects of the 2004 Andaman tsunami there, and there are whole communities that never recovered even now. I went through villages that were just crumbled walls and broken tile floors overgrown with plants, entire seaside hotel complexes abandoned. Some fishing boats that were pushed over a kilometer inland were turned into memorials where they came to rest. What used to be open pit tin mines are now lakes, with houses partially submerged but still being lived in. It was the most eerie and depressing thing I had ever seen.

The worst part is what led up to it, the earthquake itself. I don't mean in terms of damage, but almost psychologically. Earthquakes in Japan are, obviously, not unusual. But, in the weeks leading up to the earthquake, there were several foreshocks. It wasn't obviously alarming, but frequent enough that, in one of the latter ones, I had actually had the thought, "Man, we've been getting a lot of earthquakes recently." Of course, the normal mode of thinking is just "Well, that's just randomness for ya", not "Well, here comes one of the biggest earthquakes in modern history!"

But, when the earthquake starts, and then it doesn't stop and just keeps going and going, it's pretty awful, because you just have no control. The ground is shaking so hard that it's actually hard to move around and especially to go down stairs. I don't know where this video was taken, but obviously the further north you were, the stronger the shaking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHMoAfNJH3Y. But this just gives you an idea for just how drat long the ground was shaking.

I was teaching in Japan at the time and, after literally going through these steps every 5 or so seconds with the other teachers: "Oh, earthquake. Huh, it's not stopping. Oh, should we get under desks? Wow, it's still going and it's pretty strong, we should probably get outside. Holy poo poo, everyone get outside NOW." and all the students are outside (AFTER all the shaking is over, because they couldn't get down the stairs safely), you know, everything is "fine".

So, you've gotten everyone out, everyone's safe, there's no collapsed buildings, phew. Dodged a bullet there! I guess the damage won't be so bad!

...and then you go home and see the tsunami LIVE and it's like the world just drops from under you, because it's obvious that things are hosed just when you thought everything was going to be fine. And when it's live, well, you see things like a woman running for her car, trying to save it/run away, the water coming around the corner, and then the camera pans away.

And I mean, you see video like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p3dM8JAq2E and the scale is just massive.

There's a pretty awesome apartment building in downtown South Bend that was built as a high school in the 20's. The classrooms have all been renovated into beautiful apartments with a *lot* of character, all walking distance from DTSB. One of the apartments in the middle of the building used to be a swimming pool, so it's all open space with a deep end and a shallow end. It's all carpeted, there's couches and chairs, and they hold underground living room concerts and film screenings an' poo poo. I filmed this there, a couple weeks ago. Check out the venue, the crowd, and the band. It starts with the finale, then goes through their encore. You could hear a pin drop in this room.

I'm new to taking video, but if y'all like my style I'll start posting more.

A tripod or some other way to keep your camera steady, even if you do it in post editing, would go a long, long way.
