This was originally posted in DnD but Evilweasel gassed it and said I could repost it in GBS

This thread is actually about two, somewhat related stories. The mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg has been white knighting both (while making drinks over a certain number of ounces illegal.) Both were reported by Democracy Now on Thursday.

Dozens of New York lawmakers and several advocacy groups are convening on Capitol Hill today to call on the Justice Department to investigate the New York City Police Department’s controversial "stop-and-frisk" policies. Last year the NYPD stopped, frisked and interrogated people nearly 700,000 times — mostly black and Latino men. In all, there were more stops of young African-American men than the total population of that group in the city. "This is not about criminals. This is about a generation that’s been criminalized, targeted and brutalized by the police," says organizer Jamel Mims, a victim of stop-and-frisk. We’re also joined by NAACP President Benjamin Jealous, who is helping to organize a silent march against racial profiling in New York City on Father’s Day, June 17. "This is really the biggest, most aggressive racial profiling problem that we have in this country, and it just has to be stopped," Jealous says.

These stop and frisks have a chilling effect on the minority community and is a new form of Jim Crow.

This is not a harmless thing where if you aren't breaking the law you have nothing to worry about. If you are young person there is a certain probability, regardless of what race you are, that you have drugs on you. Its sort of a rite of passage for many people. If you are white you are substantially less likely to get caught, will probably grow out of smoking pot, you'll pursue higher education and move on with your life.

If you are a minority, you are substantially more likely to get stopped and frisked, assuming the marijuana they find is even yours and not planted there by some crooked cop trying to meet a quota. While it is a misdemeanor to be caught with a small amount of marijuana, it does result in a criminal record that can stigmatize them forever, preventing them from getting jobs or college scholarships.

But even people who are in compliance with the law can get roped in to this street to prison pipeline but the sheer number of stop and frisks that they receive. It is also harming the relationship between the police and the citizenry. If you see the police as out to get you, why would you go to them if you have a problem?

Eight American Muslims from New Jersey have filed a federal lawsuit calling on the New York City Police Department to stop its surveillance and intelligence-gathering program that targets Muslim and Arab communities. Under the controversial program, New York City police officers monitored the daily life of Muslims in the tri-city area and across the Northeast — including where people ate, prayed and even where they got their hair cut. We speak to Glenn Katon, legal director at Muslim Advocates, the group that filed the lawsuit. "When the NYPD says basically all Muslims are suspect, it seems clear to us that that violates equal protection of the law," Katon says.

This has been admitted to by Bloomberg who has white knighted for the program. The people who are treated as suspects have done nothing wrong, they have broken no law, and given the NYPD no probable cause to believe they have broken the law other than the color of their skin and the religion that they practice. Not only that, but the NYPD were working way outside of their jurisdiction. This is pretty vile and it along with the previous story goes to show that the NYPD and its leadership place no value on the civil rights or liberties of people of color.
