Would modding be possible? Was it possible with Terraria? I didn't get into it long enough to hear about any modding but it sure would be interesting.

Modding's a delicate question because our take on it is "if we do it, we want to do it right" and make it as streamlined as possible both for developers and the player - we wouldn't want any clumsy "extract X zip into Y folder" stuff.

It's delicate because to achieve that requires a lot of preparation and work - so it'd probably be some time post release.

There's also the issue that modders will need good artists, because holy cow is making assets for this complex.

I really always enjoyed the 'ship' mechanic in games, where you're on a vessel (flying, sailing, whatever) and use it to both sort of live in, and travel with. FF7's airship is an example. I hope that the space station/ship you have is liveable.

It's liveable, and for exactly the same reasons you listed - I love that mechanic too and think it's a really good atmospheric aspect.

Depending how things go, seeds may corespond to star systems rather than planets, and not every single number will corespond to a star system. So rather than "hey warp to this cool planet at XXXX YYYY ZZZZ" it'd be "hey warp to this star system at XXXX YYYY ZZZZ and go to the 8th planet"

Sounds good to me, personally. It'd also give you a bit more options, and make things a bit more varied than everyone having the same experience because they just had to go to '1333 3333 3337' or '6666 6666 6666' or whatever else location they thought was funny. I think having systems with multiple planets sounds like a great and logical idea, plus I'm sure there's stuff you could do with the whole "multiple related planets" thing. Quests that span multiple planets in the same system, etc?

I hope you can destroy entire planets, if you beautify your entire system except for that ugly smokey planet and it's too dangerous to terraform, just drop a bomb on it and get it done quick.

After giving the stuff on Soundcloud a bit more of a listen I have one big problem with a particular track, Crystal Exploration 2. It has the "you're in a mirror-like cave of pure amazing" feel to it, but more than that it makes me thing of something much larger:

You've just finished exploring a new world and are heading back to your home world. It's a nice home world and your work there has been going well and despite some set backs progress is being made.

Something's wrong though. As you travel through the system you can see the world, not clearly, but clear enough, and something's wrong. The closer you get the more uncertain you are that you've reached your home; the planet's appearance looks different. As you pass a nearby moon you are sure that the planet looks scarred. You've only been gone a month or two but colony you built isn't visible in the darkened patch where it should be.

Coming in to the atmosphere you see the smoke clearly, rising up from your base. Only a few miles from the surface and you being to make out the remains of buildings and vehicles, no movement or activity is noticeable. Once on the ground you're certain you've landed in hell. Signs of combat, a futile defense and the remnants of its defenders, are everywhere. Scraps of your Mechanized Armor are scattered across the battlefield that was your home. No survivors can be found, everyone is gone.

I have no idea if such invasions are planned in any way but having to fortify your homeworld (but not the space station perhaps?) for a potentially inevitable encounter with an enemy seems like it could add something whose closest comparison is probably Terraria's Kobold Army.

I've always had more problems with the lack of coding than art, so this sounds pretty cool:

That kind of sounds awesome but also sounds like it would make the experience really boring really fast. Though, I kind of need/want to see what that looks like now!

The best part was that - at least in earlier versions, I think this was fixed in 1.1 - it would work in multiplayer as well, so you could have someone running around with a 20 meter long phaseblade murdering everything that no-one else could see because they didn't have the extra-long version of the phaseblade sprite.

SolidSnakesBandana posted:

Minecraft modding is actually a total clusterfuck. Terraria has no official mod support and is terribly written. Minecraft has no official mod support, is terribly written, and is obfuscated.

The reason there are so many mods for it is that a few dedicated programmers have written tools to automatically decompile and de-obfuscate parts of minecraft, and libraries that make mod development easier (you write your mod targeting the library rather than interacting with minecraft's code directly), and suchlike.

It would kind of suck to spend ages building a really nice base on some planet only to come home and find it a smoking crater, and if this happens regularly it could easily become invasion whack-a-mole once you have enough colonies.

On the flip side, I really like the basic idea and there has some to be some way to balance it.

I am so excited for this game holy poo poo.

Given that some of the developer chat has seemed to suggest a "storyline" in addition to the randomized missions and such, and given that the game apparently begins with you fleeing from your home planet as it's destroyed, I have to wonder if the main antagonist and end-boss is a cosmic threat in the vein of Galactus or Unicron. I really hope so, because that could potentially mean that the "final battle" would involve going to your primary colony, arming yourself to the teeth, digging in your heels, and preparing to face the Armageddon that consumed your homeworld and shoot it in the god drat face. Not this time, motherfucker

I've been listening to the soundcloud from their blog all day. Between the music, the visual direction, and the fact that the very least we get will be "Terraria, in space," I already know that this is going to be a day-one buy for me.

Yep. I also think I've seen somewhere someone both walking past stairs (to parts of the room behind them) and up them, so as long as the controls for that aren't awkward (maybe holding up or another key while walking by the stairs to start going up them instead) there's another feature that should be great despite its being a minor thing.

Right now I'm probably looking forward to Starbound more than any other upcoming title, but sometimes it feels like there's so little news to go on that I just get so eager for more, though there's no way to coax more out of the team. And progress is so uncertain that there's no way of knowing when release is coming, especially when they're showing off features like "we've got a landscape generator now!" as though they were just finished. The game is making me feel like a little kid again, counting the days and impatiently waiting for a sign of something more. I want this game. I need it.

That's funny, I was just telling my friend that the thing I'm really looking forward to is being a badass wandering space cowboy who protects the innocent and never turns away a soul in need. A child of dead world, fighting tirelessly to preserve the lives of others. My buddy got super into the discussion and we both ended up hoping that there would be persistent antagonists in this game, like space pirates or whatever, so we could wage a bitter war against them, destroy their bases, free their slaves, and drive them back to their headquarters to crush them triumphantly in a final, climactic battle, forever freeing the natives of Funkstar Gamma from their reign of terror.

Have fun with your galaxy full of dead worlds and loneliness. In the meantime, we'll be cruising around in a galaxy where every world is our homeworld, populated by friends and adopted family of all species. Gonna be the rainbow coalition to end all rainbow coalitions. Fuckin' Captain Planet meets Star Trek up in here, it's a goddamn party every day

e: The main thing I'm hoping for is that NPC settlements will remember you in some way. Even if it's just a simple little "reputation" value or similar, it would be extremely cool to go back to some quiet little planet that you visited way back when, and have all the locals greet you cheerily and make a bit of a fuss over your arrival because you fixed their water purifier and rescued one of their lost children during your first visit. I feel like that would make for a lot of neat little vignettes, sort of a cathartic change of pace after the existential serenity of empty space, untapped riches, and alien skies

Assuming you will be building all sorts of items and there would be NPCs, that's a great excuse for electric fences, automatic turrets, and guards. Then if a base or colony was attacked your defenses and security staff would either repel the invaders or hold them off while they send a distress call and wait for you to come back them up. Don't want to keep bailing out the same guys all the time? Beef up their defenses until they can handle it on their own!
