The Real Texas

It's on Steam Greenlight! Go vote for it right now so we can have it on Steam, too.

The Real Texas is described as, "an action adventure game that plays like a mashup of Zelda: Link to the Past and Ultima VI," and that's probably the best description you're going to get without just trying it for yourself. I'd also add that the music and the silly style are somewhat reminiscent of Earthbound, which is a good thing in my book. The game is sold through the official site, GOG, GamersGate, and Desura. You can also download the soundtrack for free on the official site here.

Is it worth it? If you like what you see here, I'd say yes. It lasts 10-20 hours and it's very charming the whole way through. To help you make up your mind, here's a slightly more detailed breakdown of the different parts that make up the game:

Exploration

The game is open-ended in exactly the same way as A Link to the Past, so I think they got that part right. There's lots to do and to explore right off the bat, made even more interesting by the ability to hop back and forth between England and The Strange Texas. England is smaller and more puzzle focused, while The Strange Texas is quite large () and focuses more on combat and questing. Items you get in one world will help you progress in the other, so the game directly encourages you to explore around instead of just banging your head on one puzzle. Speaking of which...

Puzzles

Most of the puzzles in the game aren't too complicated, but they do require you to think a little bit. In addition to the usual finding hidden switches and items, you might have to climb up a series of objects, figure out the right verb (or topic in a conversation), find and equip a special item, etc. None of the puzzles are truly unfair, but neither are they so easy as to be dull. The game gives good hints.

Combat

This is probably the most janky part of the game (except maybe the visuals), but it's at least tolerable (usually). You right click to draw your gun, which gives you a crosshairs. Then, just point the mouse at what you want to shoot and click. The game takes recoil into account, so clicking too fast will make you miss a ton, though you still miss a good amount even if you do it correctly. This is partly because some enemy types dodge even when you hit.

Where the combat really fails is that it's extremely frustrating as soon as you get hit. The screen turns red, your character starts moving slower, and he also starts doubling over in pain. These effects get more severe the more damage you take, so getting hit at all can easily spiral out of control and make it impossible to escape even from easy enemies. This is counterbalanced by relatively fast regeneration if you do survive and a very minimal death penalty if you don't, but it's still probably the worst part about the game. At least it gets better when you get better weapons, though.

Story

For as silly as it is, I have to say that the story actually isn't bad. It does a good job of drawing you in, and the ending doesn't disappoint. You find out pretty quickly that you're not the only person who's traveled to The Strange Texas from the real world, and a lot of other little details really add to the curiosity of the setup (such as how all the children in town are haunted by purple specters). I also like some of the side stories for the townsfolk. Don't just dismiss the game because of the art or the one or two frustrating parts: the writing and the music make it well worth the time invested.

This game is absolutely fantastic. It's also currently almost half-off for its launch week.

Any fans of Zelda or Ultima IV - VII really, really need to pick this up.

... that said, your OP is kind of messy. Maybe throw the video with the gameplay up top? Use timg to make all those images take less space, and put them side-to-side instead of top to bottom? People have to scroll a ton to even see what the game is about.

EDIT: VV definitely.

welcome to murder city, i'm the mayor

Picked this game up yesterday and I'm really loving it. This game is like a surrealist nightmare proto-Fallout as blown out of the pixellated rear end in a top hat of a person who maybe heard of a country called America once (in passing).

Three lines into the game, the main character drops the word "honour", like a Real American would.

There's a weird amount of depth to the game too -- I ran into a game breaking bug a few minutes in that required me to start the game, but doing so kind of revealed a cool open aspect to the game: a really early quest had me infiltrating a bandit's hideout and steal an item from them. The first time through I found a bunch of sleeping bandits took them out with my pistol. This triggered an alarm, forcing me to shoot my way through the entire base. On my second time around, though, I let the guards be, and found a closet full of bandit clothes nearby. I tried putting them on and lo and behold, I was able to walk around without triggering any suspicion.

All in all, this is a really amazing badgood game, and you all should play it.

The music is also excellent, equal parts Harvest Moon and Fez mixed with a little Earthbound, which I'm all for.

EDIT: One thing though -- when the game says to only turn on one of its features on nVidia cards, it really means it. My first time through the game I had the setting turned on and noticed every shot of my gun would pause the game, which I assumed was a poorly implemented Zelda 64 thing. (It wasn't)

It reminds me of... I don't know, David Lynch / Twin Peaks? It's bizarre. And awesome.

I'm stuck looking for the gasoline, so I decided to try tweaking the OP a little more. I'll keep adding stuff as I find it, or as awesome people continue pointing it out to me. If this thread ever gets beyond page 2, I'll probably add a goon testimonials section to it as well, since I imagine we'll have a lot of those. It's quite a charming game.

I hate games without demos.

I say this because my laptop meets the extremely vague/minimalist "minimum requirements" but doesn't meet the "recommended requirements" and I highly doubt I could get my money back if "it technically runs, but is essentially unplayable".

I mean, by looking at it, it shouldn't have any problems at all running, but as I learned from Dungeons of Dredmoor, sometimes modern games have bizarrely high system demands that seem to have no correlation to what it seems like they should.

So, if anyone happens to have played this on a really old computer or something, I'd appreciate a heads up. It seems like a pretty great game.

I'm playing it on a pretty low end computer and it seems to have similar performance to Bastion. For the most part it's good, though a couple areas with a ton of ground clutter start to stutter a bit. For Bastion, I ran everything fine except towards the end game, when the really active backgrounds gave me a performance hit. You can try a free Bastion demo here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/107100/

I know it's not a perfect answer or anything. For what it's worth, I played Bastion on a Lenovo X120e (straddles the line between netbook and cheap laptop) and I'm playing this on a very slight upgrade from that. Sorry I can't be of more help.

This is a great game. Buy it now!

This game is the AAAest of indie games: it has a 3D engine, awesome music and a story that's more than just background fluff. The posters who mentioned the Kafka and Twin Peaks vibe were pretty spot on, I think. Yet, this isn't one of those pretentious indie-games-are-art, I-lack-creativity-so-I-just-say-it's-all-about-the-bomb* games, either.

This feels like an honest tribute to the unmatched classics of 20 years ago. Light-hearted but with heart.

I'm not a reviewer and barely speak english anyway, so make of this what you will.
But seriously, buy this game!

*) As it is, I still haven't finished the game so it might, in fact, be about the bomb.

Just got around to installing it. You know that license agreement thing that pops up in the installation wizard and everyone pretty much just skips through?

THE ACCOMPANYING PROGRAM IS PROVIDED UNDER THE TERMS OF THIS COMMON PUBLIC LICENSE ("AGREEMENT"). ANY USE, REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION OF THE PROGRAM CONSTITUTES RECIPIENT'S ACCEPTANCE OF THIS AGREEMENT.

etc

There was indeed a robot poem. It's a bit sad.

e: Okay I played it a bit now. It's very funny and silly. I found references to some games and to Pratchett but they weren't crowbarred or gratuitous. I wish I could play as my own gender but maybe there's a reason the protagonist is a dude (besides getting sexism from ladies). This is a good game I give it top marks. You should buy it if you like things that are good. I would like to play more of it so I will go do that now.

Also the credits are really funny and you should read them too.

e2: Oh I should tell you that it has that Ultima7 thing going on where every stupid thing can be messed with or taken. I picked up lots of trash and plants before I realised. So don't do that.

I just beat the game and it was fantastic all the way through. Everything I said in the OP still holds - combat can be pretty frustrating sometimes, but thankfully those really frustrating fights are few and far between. There was only one puzzle I would have never solved without help, and all you need to know is that (mild hint) it was in the castle and I couldn't figure it out because time of day mattered.

Some of the music towards the end game gets really, really good, and the humor is very nice as well. The only thing I regret is that I didn't read the robot poem before installing. Someone post the robot poem for me!

I'll probably go through the OP tomorrow and add some more screenshots, and link to any new articles I can find about the game. There are less than two hours left for the 40% off sale so if you see this you'd better hurry!

vv thanks!

8. ROBOT SIGNING OFF

A heap of metal 'gainst a tree,
The last of model X-J-three.
Robot signing off;
Robot, singing off.

His systems have at last decayed,
Repairs were all too-long delayed.
Robot signing off;
Robot, signing off.

His photo 'lectric leds have seen,
Their rainbow last: red, blue and green.
Robot signing off;
Robot, signing off.

His motor tracks to pieces bust',
His jumpjets will produce no thrust,
His laser-eyes output no beam,
And all his servos leftwards lean,

Long, long is gone the glor'yus hour,
When weilded he that blazing power
To zap into oblivi-yin
Titan'yum plate like common tin.

Instead he sits among the dust,
Still metal, although mostly rust.
Sends out this last des'prate report,
To file before his files abort,

The final datum, sad refrain,
Now blips through his 'lectronic brain:
Robot... signing off;
Robot... signing... { insert sound of off-hook telephone here }

You can kill it with a silver bullet, which it tells you if you mention "weak" to it. Also another clue of this is that one of the residents there speaks of a silver bullet. My game had a glitch where I could leave purgatory so I was a little prepared from wandering around for three or so hours.

The lost and found seems a bit buggy. In my experience, everything I dropped on the ground or left in a container stayed there. Some items, though, would also end up in the lost and found or in a shop where they could be bought. If I picked up the item from the lost and found, it would disappear from where I dropped it. If I went back and got it, though, it would no longer be in the lost and found.
