Join the Goon Steam Group to arrange games!![]() ![]() ![]() Monaco is a top down co-op action stealth game in development. One through four players take on the role of criminals who are tasked with breaking into somewhere, stealing something, and breaking out. Each character can carry one item, like a medkit, tranquilizer crossbow, or smoke bombs, but you only get one use out of them. To get more uses, you need to collect the gold coins scattered around each area. 10 coins nets you another use. You can only see what your character sees, so much of the game is spent frantically dodging guards and security cameras and other hazards while you try to make your way up or down to the final objective, then back again. The game is playable in single player, which gives you three lives each level, or you can play with up to four players in coop mode, which is more frantic and an almost entirely different experience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC7b6642AWM ![]() ![]() Monaco has a bunch of character classes:
![]() ![]() Monaco is out on PC and it will be out on XBLA soon. ![]() ![]() San Diego based Pocketwatch Games is making Monaco. It's basically Andy Schatz, the founder, and he contracted out the music to Austin "Won a Grammy" Wintory, the composer for games like Journey. When Monaco won the IGF grand prize back in 2010, Andy was the only one who had done anything, although now there's some voice acting in there from people who have Frenchier accents than him. ![]() ![]() Many of the previews are outdated as of right now, but whatever.

I was very impressed with the recent demos that debuted a couple of months ago. Four-player co-op seemed really hectic as everyone tried to coordinate their movements around the casino. I also like the ability to crawl around air ducts to bypass certain obstacles. I can't wait to experience it first-hand.

In what you will likely find to be either an endearing sort of conversational manner or an insufferably "indie-in-a-bad-way" manner, the developer for this occasionally posts vlogs that he chooses to record not in his bedroom but while he walks around San Diego. Monaco, Johann Sebastian Joust, Spy Party, and that game where it's like a big vs platformer that goes across several screens: the four games that I heard about on Idle Thumbs two years ago but just refuse to actually release. Indie games, why do you not let me just play you

I don't think the character is sexist being that all the characters are just flat bank-heist archetypes, but saying a 1-dimensional femme fatale is progressive is silly poo poo.

I wondered what happened to this game! I sat with Andy Schatz at lunch during the 2010 Game Developers Convention, he is a really nice guy. I had no clue it was just him making it(at that moment in time), I thought he had a small team of 3 or 4. Some people were having some trouble playing(learning) the game during the demo, its a shame we didn't get to play it some more. It was my favorite that year.

And you hung a kitten, you rear end in a top hat. So, no new info in the stream from what I can tell, except for one thing which is a spoiler: Andy Schatz, the dev, said two things. At one point, when they were talking about shotguns, he was explaining how they work, and he mentioned "there's no friendly fire. Well, at least for this level..." Later on, someone asked if there was a versus mode, and he said "that's something I don't want to reveal right now." I think it's fairly certain there's going to be a "turn on your comrades" part later in the game or something like that.

So I got into this beta. We cannot make videos but we are "free to talk it up, post screenshots, whatever you want" per the developer, so if anyone has any questions I can answer them, or at least try (I haven't played much). So far my impressions are that this is exactly as amazing as it looks in all the videos and that what you see is pretty much what you get: a great stealth game with intricate but simple mechanics, a beautiful aesthetic, easily learned controls but a plethora of strategies, great level design, and equally fun but fairly different play styles depending on whether you play alone or with others. Again I haven't played very long but so far the only complaint I have is that holding down the "sneak" button (left trigger on the controller) is about as tiring as it would be to hold down the "crouch" button in Thief.

Edge just put up a new preview. Still can't wait. Tycho: Is there any indication from the beta on (a) how much content there will be in the game, and (b) how replayable the content will be? Is there a difficulty slider or an enemy placement randomizer or anything of that nature?
