The situation looks pretty grim for FBI informant (read: lying paid snitch) and Occupy Wall Street infiltrator Brandon Darby. First, they get 85 House offices to go off about the perils of swatting: http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Govern...-SWATting-Cases But then someone compares the SWAT call voice to Darby - it's a match sound wise, and who got swatted when is a perfect match for Darby's personal agenda. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pe4NCaz4NgM There are a number of pastebin entries out there about this guy and the rest of his crew, who seem to be equally talented - lots of felony convictions, current arrests, and other forms of freeper fail. His Twitter has been pretty funny, @AaronWorthing and @BrooksBayne got into the act, too. Looks like they're all in some sort of trouble for this stuff. I predict Encyclopedia Dramatica entries for all parties involved at the rate this situation is evolving.

A CRUNK BIRD posted:I forgot about Occupy Wall Street. Like, I literally haven't thought about it in months. Am I supposed to remember who this guy is? Brandon Darby was one of the founding members of the Common Ground Relief Collective, which was one of the first humanitarian relief organizations to make it into New Orlean's Lower Ninth Ward after Hurricane Katrina hit. One of the things he's famous for was swimming past dead bodies to get to one of his friend's places, and the organization that they later started admittedly did some pretty amazing work for the local residents in terms of organizing doctors, food and emergency relief, and later, they helped local residents rebuild homes. In the intervening years, Darby developed a persona of being this weird, hyper-macho anarcho-authoritarian. I know that's a contradiction in terms, but he had a reputation of belittling those who didn't agree with his unique brand of anti-authoritarianism, and he also was regarded as quite a bit of a misogynist who was fairly infamous for hooking up with female Common Ground volunteers. This is detailed in numerous places across the internet, but it was confirmed to me in person by some CGRC volunteers that I met when I was in New Orleans doing similar work a few years ago. He's most famous because he went to Venezuela and was approached with an offer of working with FARC or some other group to conduct operations against the United States. He was also approached by some supposedly belonging to Palestinian/Lebanese militant groups as well. This basically caused him to flip 180 degrees around, and he became an informant (some say agent provacateur) for the FBI. He outed himself on this a few years ago in a widely-read letter on Indymedia saying that he had made the decision to work with the FBI. At the time, two activists were undergoing trial on a variety of felony charges stemming from a plot to attack a bunch of police cruisers with Molotov cocktails; the activists in question claim that Darby basically bullied them into doing it by belittling them and insulting their masculinity. In the intervening years, Darby continued his descent into batshit insanity by partnering up with Andrew Breitbart, contributing his weird blend of anti-government belief to Breitbart's website. He's partnered with a number of conservative organizations, and has basically turned his entire back on the former community that allowed him to build up his entire persona. Consider him a more militant version of David Horowitz. There's a great story on this by This American Life. You can also read his letter in which he outs himself as an informant here. There, I wrote what should have been the OP! Edit: Oh hey, Brandon knows about this thread!

SWATgate in a nutshell: Political bloggers cry victim over having police invade their homes or places of business because of false 911 calls. Most blame Brett Kimberlin, former Speedway bomber turned political activist turned right-wing boogeyman. Now apparently some are blaming Brandon Darby, former left-wing activist turned FBI informant turned right-wing activist turned left-wing boogeyman. It's unclear whether recent SWATtings are dirty tricks from opposition or false flag attacks meant to drum up the base. Either way an effort post about the likes of Kimberlin, Darby and other such fuckheads of the political activism scene would be fantastic because I can't find much information about any of these people that isn't from bullshit sources.

This is related to the Brett Kimberlin thing the conservative blogosphere was trying to make a thing a few weeks ago? Hey, Brandon, can you order Chris Muir 20 pizzas or something, consider it a personal favor.

Well, if the LEO-related threads here are to be believed, anytime the cops show up at a home there is a 60% chance of them killing someone, so maybe this guy is some kind of super-lazy actuarial assassin. Or, you know, needs attention like it's oxygen.

So let me get this straight (because even though I followed the OWS thread religiously when it was still a major thing, I have never heard of this rear end in a top hat): 1)This Brandon Darby guy is a right wing shill/FBI informant. 2)As part of his shilling, he has been making a stink over people making anonymous 911 calls, that get SWAT teams sent to the homes of conservative figures 3)Someone has done voice analysis and it seems that a good number of those 911 calls were made by him to people he has a personal or professional beef with. Do I have that mostly correct? And if so, have I just been paying way too little attention to the news lately, or have these 911 calls only been a big story on right wing blog sites? Because this is the first I have heard of "Swatting".

It's not about the legal and moral question of no-knock warrants being served by militarized police and the very real possibility of innocent people being harmed or killed. Well, maybe it is, but instead of "innocent people" just insert "only people who I sympathize with politically." I listened to the TAL episode having no knowledge of Darby at all previously. I started out sympathizing with the guy, and wanting to be understanding when he described being so conflicted after informing (read: ratting) on the people who were into trying to bomb Israeli checkpoints. Even though those are legitimate military targets, I could understand anyone being somewhat shaken over a very real sense of having blood, even an enemy's blood, on their hands and being responsible for anyone else's loved one's death. But once he crossed the line into egging on the young and impressionable left-wing militants, it just stunk of having a financial incentive to corrupt a buncha kids and get them locked up.

mrfreeze posted:So let me get this straight (because even though I followed the OWS thread religiously when it was still a major thing, I have never heard of this rear end in a top hat): SWATting (gonna keep typing it like that because I think it's funny) is a media invention in its infancy, swirling around the right-wing blogosphere where they hope to keep it alive long enough for the mainstream media to get bored enough to pick it up as the next big crisis sweeping the nation. I think the best part of SWATgate is how freaked out people on the right are getting over the idea of the police busting into their homes and potentially shooting them just because the police were acting hastily based on bad information. Maybe it'll give some of them a little perspective, but I doubt it.

I know this Brandon guy is bad news or something but I too am having a hard time identifying what is so inherently bad about the recent SWATing. A bunch of right wing out of touch well-to-do's witnessing what it's like to have a militarized unit of armed and misinformed men bust down your door and hold a gun to your families collective heads after executing the family pet. There's countless post in this sub forum alone about how militarized the U.S. police force are and how awful misinformed SWAT raids are. Turning the 1%'s watch dogs onto themselves seems like a great way to get policy changed. Since Republicans tend to actually get things done.

They can come in and shove you around and do anything really for as long as they need under their legal grey area, and get away with it every time.
