Lovely. A DF thread. Great things going horribly wrong await beyond the horizon, or the pull of a lever. Also, If this fortress does not end up with a wacky cart ride/trap/system/highway/perimeter patrol I'm going to be so disappointed.

I always look forward to seeing what bizarre forgotten beasts or demons turn up. Once a long time ago, I generated a world then read its history. My favourite character was a pig demon who tricked his way into becoming the sheriff of a human settlement but only had a day to enjoy his new role, before a dragon burnt then ate him! Pig demons must taste delicous?

Sweet a new DF LP. So there was an idea I was toying around with during Gemclod. Doing kind of a build-along, constructing the fort in minecraft and then taking ss and maybe a video to give an idea of the scale of some of the mega projects, like the duck keg. Is this just a dumb idea or something you'd guys like to see? I don't want to detract from the actual LP, just provide a more 3d visual than stonesense.

People ask me a lot of questions. Questions like "what is the best way to cripple a goblin so you can terrify all his friends?". Course having been killing for over 65 years I know the answer, but I ain't inclined to tell no one. Why? Cause that ain't the question you should be asking me. Any dumb dwarf who's spent a year in the army can tell you how to fight a goblin, cause that's all we do. Now instead you should be asking "how are we gonna stop a horde of undead ghouls from tearing us apart?". The answer? Kill everything. Every last animal that ain't been tamed needs to die. Why? Cause they ain't smart enough to stay out of the evil. I mean the real evil, not some silly moral concept of right and wrong. The kind that poisons the land and twists critters into horrible things. That is the biggest threat to all civilized folk. But of course nobody listens to me. They just say I'm a crazy old man and go back to killing goblins and elves and whoever else offended them at the time. But I know what the real threat is. One day, the sky is gonna be covered in undead kestrels and all the dwarves will come running to me, begging for me to save them. But I won't be able to, cause nobody listened. That's how the worlds gonna end. Might as well kill some zombies before it happens though.

That's really more a matter of animals than it is structures. I *think* the official measurements for each tile for physics calculations is 2x2x3 meters, but 2x2x2 or 3x3x3 might be better in Minecraft for consistency.

I don't think it was updated for either new versions of DF or new versions of Minecraft, but there was a utility for importing DF maps into Minecraft. It did each tile as a 3x3x3 block with floors just being 3x3x1. It was pretty cool, but it seems like a big hassle to do manually. It would be interesting to see how you handle it if it is something you attempt.

Personally, I'm more bothered by the patchwork effect made by the subtle color differences between identical grass tiles. If we're tinkering with the tileset, I'd vouch for the "Ground Flat" option as well. The dry and dead patches would still have their own colors, but the variation in the normal grass tiles would be reduced to two from like eight or something. scamtank fucked around with this message at 01:00 on Jun 25, 2012 |

It would be interesting to see how you handle it if it is something you attempt. Yeah I made one for Gemclod towards the end. I only did the surface fort and the grand stair under the aquarium before I ran into a huge chasm and ran out of free time. It would be much easier now that creative mode is back. Wireless Redstone mod is basically mandatory if you want your levers do actually do what they are supposed to do though. The best measurements I found were just to make each tile 1 block 3 tiles high, plus 1 block for the floor tile below each level. The main problems are making fortifications not look silly(especially when some hare brained architect builds them hanging over thin air) and stairs. I just took creative license with those, some ended up ladders and some took up more space than they should have. It was fun to make though. You don't really get a good feel for how slapdash things can be until you throw it all up with materials and holes and all. Like how the aquarium still had wood walls because it was constructed from the original building. Or the hole in the roof that let flying creatures in. Or the fact that the aquarium's front wall blocked quick access to the roof so we were never able to have quick marksman response because they had to go up the left leg past the hero's hospital in to Munki's hideyhole and back down the right leg out onto the roof and then up to the front ramparts.

Great update, Leperfish! Also, journal writers: Don't forget that nearly all migrants are now actual historical figures. Your dwarves now have actual histories with previous professions, kills and families. I'm not sure if we'll get an opportunity to dig into the Legends mode while the LP goes on, but you may want to draw inspirations from your dwarfsona

Alright, I've already recorded all the screenshots for the next update but I can fiddle with this. My main hangup is I won't tolerate hunks of grass in the middle of my text wherever a comma or period is supposed to be. So, I think the way to fix it is to tell DF itself to use uniform ground instead. Which looks like this: Is this what you want? Honestly it looks worse to me but if you guys prefer it I can leave it like this (from after the next update onward). PoptartsNinja posted:Speaking of, did my dinosaurs make it in? No. Honestly I spent like a week thinking "hell yeah land of the lost dwarf fortress" but ultimately I decided that it would have been a lot of effort (because the only dino packs I can find online kind of suck and include stupid things or are incomplete) for not really that much payoff (you can be eaten by a dino instead of a jabberer but ultimately it's the same thing). This LP is going to mostly be about the new stuff in the game. I think there's definitely room for a dinosaur DF LP but I suspect that one would wind up mostly being about dinosaurs. TildeATH posted:Might also want to make it looked a bit more lived in by lifting off the texture of the sword and overlaying it semi-transparent-like. Yeah never use attachments ever they are hitler. Hey, I could have made dinosaurs if you asked. Though Toady already kind of solved the problem of there not being many creatures, so long as you don't mind there being animal man versions of practically everything now. Beware the skeletal kestrel men!

I would not be happy with simply adding some dinosaurs to the game. I am... I don't know how to explain it exactly. I guess you could say I'm a completionist. If I added dinosaurs it would need to be a total conversion to a Mesozoic ecology. No flowering plants, warmer wetter climate, and so on. I realize that's very stupid in a game where there's underground agriculture, dragons, eyeball grass, and zombies; but it's how it is. Someone else should do a dinosaur version and I'll enjoy it a lot and not be a roadblock to ever getting anything finished ever. Bad Munki posted:From my point of view, a lot more time is spent looking at the map than reading text, so the value of a good-looking map far outweighs the value of non-grassy text. And the default phoebus is pretty mild for those tiles, it doesn't take long to not even see them anymore. I understand and recognize that this is likely the majority view. But please understand that simply using a graphics set at all represents a huge compromise of my personal preferences which I have made to try to please the majority. But I can't tolerate hosed up text it makes me angry. Once my turn is over, later Overseers are free and welcome to play with the phoebus configurator and ruin all the periods and commas and whatnot to their hearts' content. I won't even complain about it. For now, we need real commas, sorry.
