It's real profitable for a gaming or hobby company to use booth babes, sexualized imagery in its marketing materials, etc... to sell its poo poo and it's really wearing on me. I derive an ever decreasing amount of entertainment from my chosen hobbies and it's frustrating to me.

I had to be directly involved as a producer/editor for a cosplay project and I had to walk away for many reasons, part of which is their lovely community. I wouldn't think that anime characters could be real, but so many of the creepy people in that community are like TITS!!!! and act like they're the lecherous, nose-bleed pathetic morons in those animes. The most socially pathetic creatures on Earth. I also couldn't handle the "diva" aspect of the models, where they thought they were the hottest poo poo on the planet and that they were like some big loving star. As if I should be treated like a big football star if I dressed up in authentic NFL gear and went to a convention as that football star. I had a handful of people I worked with who were great, but the vast majority of my interactions were from people that make me think of a hazmat suit were I to come into contact with them again.

For marketing materials, I'll make a comment about how any product using sex is likely generic and has a low opinion of its customers. Everyone else is like SEXAY! or "that's so hott." They line up to get their free tee-shirt or whatever bullshit the booth is handing out. And they're engaged now. They want to spend MORE money on this generic bullshit.

Plus, look at amount of racism and sexism in eSports and gaming in general. I invited a guy over to our office a few months ago and he worked for one of the biggest gaming companies. He proceeded to use the word 'jew' as a verb, and then made a comment about one of his female co-workers getting a job "just because she's a hot girl." After he left, I spent the next 10 minutes apologizing to everyone in the room. And the egos. You would've thought that Kobe Bryant or POTUS came through the way some of those players act. You know what happened to most of my pro-gaming buddies? They realized they were exceptionally smart and they could've worked a middle management job and earned 5 times the amount of money they made in a decent year of gaming. So, they got those jobs!

Edit: What about "gaming culture?" HELLO, I AM A 'GAMER.' THAT MEANS I GO TO A STORE AND BUY GAMES. I THEN PLAY THEM! I guess they're also "Grocery Shopper" or "Clothes Wearer." That's how special being a "gamer" is. Then someone will get mad that another person is wearing a Zelda tee-shirt and they never played the game. Hey, idiot, that tee-shirt was designed to make money, just like those games. There's nothing special about it. There's no "right" or "wrong" to wearing the shirt. Again, it's a consumer product. And lovely gamers complaining about "fake nerds" as if there's some predefined threshold a person-- most of the time, girls-- have to cross in order to be taken seriously. Like a person playing Pokemon isn't a "gamer." THERE'S NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT BEING A PARTICIPANT IN A CONSUMER CYCLE BUYING CONSUMER PRODUCTS. Holy poo poo, stop taking this stuff so seriously and trying to create your super cool #1 club for REAL GAMERS.

This isn't just about me. It's not like these would be ok if they didn't embarrass me. And my suffering certainly isn't much compared to the entire swaths of women/minorities out there who want to be taken seriously in the hobby groups but constantly have this poo poo flung out there, influencing the opinions and world-views of the masses. But this is how I feel about what I'm subjected to and the people I have to consider "my peers" when taking in these hobbies. It loving sucks. But, hey, it's what maximizes returns from the masses! =/
