I just received a Steam notification that I got into the beta, but it's not showing up in my Library or Tools lists. Is there something special I need to do to run it?

Good idea, but it's not showing up there, either. Really strange, because the message I got was very specific (not my image, but it was this message):

Hnnng, I want the SFM so bad. But the only way to increase my chances of getting it is to upload stuff to the Workshop. Makes no sense since movie makers can't share stuff there to begin with in order to increase their chances. Maybe upload a taunt or something I guess. I remember emailing them about SFM many years ago. Hope I get it soon.

Dammit. I hit the survey/key button when I was on my Mac and now it won't let me take it when I'm on my PC. I guess I have no chance of getting an invite now!

So has anyone here used it much? I have pretty much no interest in moving someone elses video game characters around, but as a freelance animator, a free, well designed, unbloated, animation program based around hardware rendering sounds pretty great for doing low level animation with a fast turn around. As this is apparently only set up to use TF2 assets, does that mean you can't import your own yet?xzzy posted:I really wouldn't be surprised if rooster teeth put effort into importing Halo assets into Source and started making the actual RvB series with this tool. Well not quite unprecedented, there's a wealth of game characters optimised for different animation programs, many of which now have pretty sophisticated hardware renderers, this is pretty much just streamlines the process. Also animating take a lot more effort than machinima style puppetry, I'm not sure how much it would appeal to people used to making a 5 minute film in a day, as opposed to months. Although it looks like you can just use the premade animations that come with the game, so maybe people will just use those.

It is limited to TF2 but seeing as how objects from the Steam Workshop are available you have to be able to import your own already. But I wouldn't know. Valve even mentioned in their FAQ that you can use SFM commercially as long as none of Valve's own assets are present in the production.

From what I see, with SFM you can mock things up in-game (exactly the same as you'd make up a machinima video), but then use SFM to do all sorts of post-production stuff (like tweaking animations, loving with the camera, etc) that you just couldn't do with a regular machinima video.

I made something even dumber than my last video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f3-HQWCDkQ Half based on the suggestion of an RvB parody being the worst inevitability for SFM I took it upon myself to do it first...and then got a little side tracked.

This tool looks bloody amazing! Doing stuff in Source like making moderately complex camera moves was an incredible pain in the rear end. This'll be awesome for machinima, and it'll be handy for movie pre-visualizing too.suddenlyissoon posted:Dammit. This tool is amazing but it seems like audio is going to be the limiting factor now with the standard TF2 models at least. You can either use the standard voice clips, do lousy impersonations, use tv/movie extracts, or just make a silent movie. There will probably be a flood of famous shows/scenes though (as with Max Payne).

I really hope they don't allow importing anything custom because the last thing YouTube needs is 3.5 million "Scout Meets A Pony" videos. Allow everything from all Source games, but not outside content.

Allowing the use of source materials is mostly just for learning the tool, that and advertising Valve's properties en masse. It's kinda broken right now, someone tried to import a MLP model and it kept crashing. He did this on stream while everyone laughed and jeered at him from the chat.
